Plenary Speech at the 18th International Conference on Learning

Training of In-Service Educators through Online Activity-based Learning

The speech described the concept of activity-based learning and how it is being implemented in online teacher training courses at the University of Mauritius.

In 2001, for the University of Mauritius to catch the eLearning bandwagon, the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created in bid to modernize the distance education concept by fully utilizing the possibilities offered by IT-enabled networked systems and the Internet. Since its establishment the centre has brought in some non-negligible innovations in the teaching and learning landscape. Inevitably, as any innovative practices, it has also brought its share of disruption in the traditional university setting, what we term as ‘’constructive disruption’’ especially with respect to the conception of pedagogy and educational practice in teacher training.

The February 2010 issue of the Commonwealth of Learning “Connections” magazine has a few sections fully dedicated to the teacher training issue. Incidentally the articles all adopt a highly critical perspective of current teacher training courses especially within developing COL countries. While most of those articles on the topic focus on the more general issue of using ODL for teacher training and capacity building, in the article “Time for Radical Change in Teacher Education”, Bob Moon, Professor at the Open University of the UK argues that it is time to implement new technologies in teacher training courses so as to focus on the continuous professional development of educators. The very essence of the article is the belief that “education and training should be an entitlement for all teachers at all stages in their careers” and that research has demonstrated that when “this entitlement is honored, learners achieve more and schools improve”. Adopting a very critical view of the so-called brick and mortar institutions for teacher training, Moon (2010) highlights “there is absolutely no way the ‘bricks and mortar’ institutions of teacher training created in the last century will be adequate for the 21st century needs”.

The VCILT has always invested in efforts to bring about a change in mindset in the way teachers in Mauritius perceive education especially with respect to the information revolution that we witnessed in Mauritius from the year 2000 and up.

A number of initiatives in the form of online workshops were undertaken to initiate teachers to new technologies and innovative ways of teaching and learning. Fully concurring with Bob Moon’s perspective the VCILT has always adopted a divergent, innovative and disruptive approach from the traditional ones in terms of capacity-building of teachers and educators. The top-up and Masters level programmes in Educational and Instructional technologies have been supplemented with an online continuous professional development programme for teachers on contemporary education issues and technologies from OERs obtained from the Open University of the UK.

  1. VCILT has used all the possible advantages offered by ICT to improve educational system but has also brought about some inconvenience as well.
First of all, as suggested by Professor Bob Moon, new technologies will definitely enhance professional development. Teachers will easily grasp students’ attention and make them understand every concept more properly. It is also less time consuming, that is, instead of wasting time dictating notes, teachers can simply email the notes so that students can read the notes before coming to the class(they have an idea of what they will be taught today), and instead of writing on the board, teachers can simply use a projector. With the help of technology, teachers can draw students’ attention more quickly. There are many other advantages as well. In this way learners achieve more and schools improve if education and training becomes an entitlement for all teachers at all stages in their careers.
However, new technologies do not bring only improvements in professional development. Technology implementation can also be time consuming. There may be an initial setup or training time cost inherent in the use of certain technologies. Even with these tasks accomplished, technology failure may occur during the activity and as a result teachers must have an alternative lesson ready. Since technology provides so many facilities, some students take the classes for granted, some don’t come to the class because they already received the notes by email. Some lecture notes are found online and therefore students need to submit their work online itself, but if ever there is a power failure (which is unpredictable, that is it can happen anytime unexpectedly) the student can lose all his/her work which can be very irritating and annoying. Of course we should always take the precaution and save our works, but sometimes we don’t do it.
I personally believe that the implementation of new technologies in teacher training courses is more beneficial than harmful.

  2. The Online Activity-based learning is introduced in order to meet the need for flexible and interactive teacher training. At the University of Mauritius, we have the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) which manages the online in-service teacher training. This process is mainly for improving teachers’ computer literacy, improving the quality of teacher training. The benefit of such an activity, that is, for improving the quality of online teacher training is that there is the building of a regular monitoring and evaluating system, and also, this encourages trainer-trainee and trainee-trainer interaction. Thus, ensuring the brighter future of schools.

  3. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created in bid to modernize the concept of distance education using the full potential of IT-enabled networked systems and the Internet. And since its inception, we can see that a lot of progress has been made, particularly in the world of education. For example, now with technology (online modules) students can stay home and work at any time and we can honestly say that this facilitates their task. The university also gains its benefit because in the meantime, it can handle more students without worrying about space: no need to see if there are free classes for so many students as they will be at their place.
The VCILT not only changes the traditional way of doing things but also the mentality of people. It brought about a change of mentality in the way teachers perceive education in Mauritius especially in relation to the revolution of the information that we have seen in Mauritius from 2000 and up. Several initiatives have been undertaken to introduce teachers to the digital world and I think that this is a very good thing for Mauritius: Even though we live on a small island, we can say that it's not just the younger generation who knows how to use digital media but almost most of the people of the older generation has grown from analog to digital with not too much difficulties.

  4. According to the text, as progress is being made in everything, it should also reflect in the teaching and learning section. Bob Moon clearly stated that the education system established in the 20th century will not be adequate for the next century. Through this prospect the University of Mauritius has established the online learning website (Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT)). This innovation has brought concrete positive results.
Also to be noted that the online or learning by distance is not to be considered as an obstacle to the traditional way of teaching(teacher in a classroom with students which are physically present, usually not mentally).

  5. From Danhoo Akshaye -This article explains about the introduction of technology in the field of teaching and how it has developed. In his article Professor Bob Moon says “education and training should be an entitlement for all teachers at all stages in their career”. I would like to agree with him that with the introduction of technology in all fields of education, we must be able to take advantage of it and make it a plus for the new technology oriented students. Also we all know that there is no age for learning. However I would like to add that this new way of learning tend to be too easy and the students would not pay particular attention to what they are being taught. I think that there should be a combination of both the “classroom” teaching and virtual learning.

  6. We are living in the 21st century, and i cannot deny the fact that we need technological innovation or, i may say, introduction, in our education system. Never did it occur before in the mind of anyone, that such distance learning would take place, but yet, it is happening.

Someone has to take the initiative first so that others can follow, and this has been the case with VCILT, at the University Of Mauritius. E-learning could have been simply a dream or not-to-be-appliclable in Mauritius, but the first step towards innovation has taken place. This initiation has proved to be successful, the fact that thousands of students have already paved the way to learning in this direction.

'Constructive Disruption' here implies that some disturbance in the education system has surely occured due to technological learning system, but it is accompanied or followed by something constructive and beneficial to students. Students are now more comfortable with social networks, online blogs and technology in general. In this way, when such innovative way of teaching is being introduced, they are more geared towards the educational system in a positive way.

However, it cannot be ignored that the new ways of teaching or training courses which are being offered may prove to be disapproved by the elderly. Some people are addicted to their traditional way of teaching and cannot cope in such situations where new technologies are being introduced.

  7. A number of initiatives in the form of online workshops were undertaken to initiate teachers to new technologies and pioneering ways of teaching and learning. It is beyond doubt a good start but how many teachers/lecturers really implement these ideas in their classes or lectures? Have their mindsets truly changed, being traditional individuals with them being prone to traditional learning/teaching methods? I think that at most 30% to 40% of them do really implement their ideas in the field of teaching while the others, being used to the traditional ways, would indeed be uncomfortable to try out new teaching ways.

  8. VCILT, from my point of view is an innovation from computer science. So Computer Science field is far different to other engineering field. Meaning that ‘something which we cannot measure we cannot control’. Example is that in civil engineering we can do measurement and control it, so in software engineering field we cannot measure software.
To begin with, I totally agree to what Professor Bob Moon stated. Surely new teaching approach would enhance new professional way of learning to our civilians. Till the time VCILT existed, it has improved gradually throughout the years with new techniques and facilities offered online.
As advantages we have loads and as such we have also some drawbacks. Example of one is that can cannot see personally the pupils’ efforts in the work performed and lecturers(teachers) and pupils are faced with many obstacles sometimes when decision needs to be taken upon their amount of work done and effort put into some constructive assignment since there is no supervision.

  9. Surely natural and synthetic narration have their own difference as when in a a face to face narration, there can be interaction between the narrator and the students while the synthetic one would be one way traffic whereby no immediate question may be ask . Thus therefore a little preference for the natural narration will be normal.

  10. The use of ICT in teaching and learning activity help to improve the quality of education. The teaching and learning process become far much interesting and the access to learning opportunity is expanded. A change in the mindset of Mauritian teachers about implementing new technologies in education would help schools to enhance teaching and learning and school management. But however, teachers who are not computer literate might not like the idea of being trained in order to change their methods of training. The online workshops are good initiatives to enlighten the teachers to the new technologies as they learn how to make their work become more innovative.

  11. The training of In- service educators through online Activity – based learning is an effective and professional way of acquiring knowledge, it ensures an advanced training to teachers who will in turn be able to meet the diversity of needs within the student population. The entitlement will also enhance the respect and confidence of the teacher which will ensure a sound and well informed cohort.

  12. I agree with what Yashine says. It is indeed true that many teachers have been trained to use new technologies, and making use of distance learning techniques. It is even true that few have started with it, and i am of the opinion that it will take some more time for everyone to cope with such a system. Thanks to VCILT, our education system is progressing.

  13. VCILT have dramatically changed the way people gather information, conduct research and communicate with others worldwide. With more powerful software and applications, along with mobile devices such as tablet computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and laptops becoming more prevalent in the classroom, information technology offers many benefits to all aspects of education.
VCILT provides teachers an endless choice of multimedia, software, applications and devices with which to create more exciting, interactive lessons. The traditional lecture-based lesson, while effective to a point, does not stimulate every type of learner. By adding a dimension to their lessons, teachers have the opportunity to engage more students and lead a more involved, energetic class.
Online courses and web-based training have improved in quality as information and communication technology has advanced. Some universities offer accredited courses that may be taken entirely on the Internet, creating more educational opportunities. These courses not only provide students with access to the same resources as students in traditional classes, but they also typically offer more flexibility, allowing students to complete the work on their own schedules. For those who wish to continue their educations but are reluctant to give up their jobs, distance learning courses can be the answer.

  14. VCLT has been created to implement the modernization of E learning in Mauritius.Nowadays Technology has taken place in every aspect of our daily life and no doubt it has a major effect our education system, though a number of initiatives are taken in form of online workshops in order to help teachers enhance with learning with new technologies and innovation but however some lecturers still use the traditional way of teaching in class and they might find it difficult to change towards new teaching ways. Therefore is Virtual Learning being really implemented or it would take more time for it to be completely overtake?

It is foretold by law of physics that to every action there would be an opposite and similar reaction. This laws acts to all and it does follow the path here also. Progress will continue and so it will be in the education sector. Education system established in the 20th century will not be adequate for the next century, Bob Moon stated. At the University Of Mauritius, the VCILT (Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies) have through this prospect creayed an online learning environment which is being run for some time by now and its seemingly in great expansion as the results of the VCILT are concrete. This new method of teaching and learning does really not pose a threat to the traditional one, furthermore this enhance the teaching and learning process.

  17. In Mauritius, many initiatives have been set about to introduce teachers about new innovative technologies of the ways of learning and teaching.Since then, the ways of viewing things about education have changed.Teachers nowadays perceive education differently compared to traditional ways of teaching. For instance,in universities, the educators prefer to use projectors rather than whiteboard. In this way,the class becomes more interactive. In this article,it can be found that at the University of Mauritius, the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies(VCILT) has developed the online web-based education which is beneficial for both educators and students. This has also solved the problem of lack of free classes as the students stay at home to work on their module online which proves to be less time-consuming.It can also be noted in this article that Bob Moon, the Professor of Education at the Open University in UK insists that all teachers should be introduced to the digital world of teaching. So,in this way, schooling will be improved and this will facilitate learning.

  18. Synthetic voice audio-narration can be an important tool for learning. For instance, text-to-speech program allows people with visual impairments or reading disabilities to listen to written works on a home computer. It can also be an advantage when a lecturer is not free. In my opinion, face-to-face narration with a PowerPoint presentation by the lecturer is more convenient as compared to synthetic or natural voice audio-narration. When the lecturer is in the class, a warm atmosphere is created. Together with this, the class is interactive, for example, if a student does not understand something, he can interrupt the class and ask his query. Furthermore, synthetic audio-narration is not rhetoric. Synthetic voices are not human, and cannot pick up on the context of the information they are portraying. They lack human input, such as with humour, putting on accents or voices for different characters or building suspense in their voice. In contrast, when the lecturer is infront of us, he will vary his tones and pace while he is talking. He will tend to stress important points through body language and expression. This can be very useful in the learning process which cannot be acqired by both synthetic and natural audio narration.

  19. It is agreed that innovation in the field of education would surely bring a number of advantages to both students and teachers.Though initiatives and online workshops are undertaken to introduce new technologies to teachers and changing the methods of teaching, but it would be rather difficult for some teachers/lecturers to abide to this new system as they have been using the traditional methods of teaching for years and years and now changing to this new ways of teaching could be a rather difficult task and this could apply to elderly teachers who are prone towards traditional teaching methods. Is new technology really being implemented in classes?

  20. In the 21st century, man has been able to make technology the tool of every improvement. In the educational sector, technology has a wide span of uses. We use the tool in the making the teachers more efficient in their noble duty. Even students would find the class more interactive if the lecturer would make use of latest technology in explaining things to them. Instead of dictating long paragraphs or notes, he can simply send the notes to students via mail so that they would be able to better understand the topic if they were unable to cope with the pace at which the teacher was going in class. This only one advantage, but there exist numerous ones. So, it can be said the technology has and will always contribute to efficient teaching practices in academic institutions.

  21. Nowadays almost every youngster has access to the internet. There is a tendency to socialize more on the social networks rather than in peer groups. Such means of communication is a way through which different views, opinions or even ideas are shared on a specific or general issue.

According to me learning can indeed be associated with Web 2.0, however for proper learning to occur there should be a formal context. This is so because social networks are more for leisure and a kind of 'relaxation'. However a specific private educational group can be created for a class for learning to occur. It would enable the students to communicate easily. As it is an informal context, students who have the tendency to be shy in class and not ask questions would feel free to do so in the group.

  22. Since the Virtual Center for Innovative Learning was created at the University Of Mauritius, there have been continuous improvements in the educational system on both, the students as well as the Educators parts.

According to Bob Moon, the implementation of new technologies in teacher training courses helps continuously in improving the method of teaching of educators .This, however is a great advantage since those educators have a vital role to play in modeling their confidence with technology, guiding the young minds towards constructive educational purposes and teaching the students the skills and career readiness needed in a competitive world.

Moreover, teacher’s use of technology, matters a great deals to students. Those teachers reports greater benefits to students learning’s, engagements and skills from technology. Teacher’s who are more technology user’s put more emphasis on the 21st century skills, including accountability, collaboration, communication , creativity, critical thinking ,ethics, global awareness, innovation and problem-solving.

We may conclude that the construction of VCILT is a great progress since gradually; it is bringing a greater amount of success in education.

  23. One thing for sure is that using technology as a method of education has proved to be very efficient as more and more people, especially students, are computer-literate and thus learning using technology is easier. However, one major issue encountered by teachers is that they may not be very familiar with educational technology. Therefore training courses are important for those teachers in order for them to deliver correctly, using technology, their lectures to students; and whatever be the stage of their career, as dealt with by Bob Moon in his article. Moreover, “the ‘bricks and mortar’ institutions of teacher training created in the last century” should completely be replaced by training courses involving the use of technology.
We are living in a world where technology is used every day, everywhere and every time; there is no place for the traditional. Though this may seem too radical, we live in a world where we must “adapt or perish”. In this case, either teachers learn how to implement technology in their courses, or they just have to go an leave the place to the next high-tech generation.

  24. Technology here relates to online in service training and its use in the classrooms.
In fact on line teacher training courses increase the accessibility to education for individuals located in remote area, remove barriers of time and space, develop a cost effective approach at providing interactive learning opportunities, broaden the range of teacher training opportunities and the opportunity to interact online with the trainers and other teachers. Unfortunately online education is not yet the prevalent method of providing in service training because the in service trainee lacks the direct teaching practice lacks the appropriate instructional strategies related to online conference, email and also there is the unavailability of frequent learning support.
In addition, technology in classroom keeps students on task and interested, prepare them for the working environment and connect them to real life situation. However its application is limited due to lack of teachers training, schools do not spend enough on technology and sometimes students get rowdy and distracted when working on computers.

  26. From my point view technology is revolutionizing the world with the numerous advantages it brings. New technology plays an important role the educational sector, with the help of technology distance learning methods was created. Distance leaning cause a disruption in the traditional method of teaching, even if it is true distance learning remains a good method of teaching for those students who prefer to study at home. Moreover technology helps to facilitates the learning process of student such as the use of animation and sound to explain a chapter.Technology has started and will continue to form part of the educational sector.

  28. My dear Julia, we both shared the common point of view.
Educational Technology is the new way of teaching in the 21st century. If the teachers who have been here for decades but cant adapt to this new trend, then better they leave the place to someone else. As at the end of the day, it is their students who would be penalized, as the latter would have inherit not so good quality education as compared to their friends whose teacher has been using the new means, i.e Educational Technology.

  29. VCILT was created in bid to modernize distance education and according to Bob Moon VCILT has always adopted innovative, divergent and disruptive approach from the traditional ones. But along with advantages, it has also brought disruption in traditional university setting. The education and training are they enough to bring about a change in the mindset of the way teachers perceive education. The aim of VCILT is to implement technology in teaching but do every teachers implement what they have learn about technology?

  30. The VCILT will definitely enhance professional development as said by Professor Bob Moon. Online Learning now plays a significant part in the curriculum of many schools and universities as lecturers place lecture notes and work for further study on the internet. In online learning, technological media, including video, audio and digital communications are used as tools to help facilitate a student’s learning.’ A number of initiatives in the form of online workshops were undertaken to initiate teachers to new technologies and innovative ways of teaching and learning.’ Teachers are encouraged to make use of technologies such as projectors in classes and thus the lecture becomes more interesting. The introduction of technologies in the educators’ training programs is indeed beneficial,if the idea is really put into practical effect.

  31. Undoubtedly with the advent of technology, we students are familiar to use computers. So, Online Activity-based learning is a good initiative from the university. Indeed, the VCILT platform enables the students to do and submit their assignments online just by going through the notes without having to attend any classes. In this way we are able to do the given tasks at our own rhythm meanwhile respecting the deadline for each activity.
Following this trend, if teachers want to use tools provided by technology for their lectures they should definitely know how to manage them. So, according to Professor Moon if we want to have an educational technology, ‘‘it is time to implement new technologies in teacher training courses so as to focus on the continuous professional development of educators’’. Although, these are online courses students still have access to the best education provided by qualified teachers or lecturers.

  32. It follows from the text that given we are in a dynamic world, it was high time for Mauritius to improve itsEducational system as well. The VCILT came forward with this initiativewhich is proving to be fruitful, in the sense that learning becomes interesting; not only for the learner but also for the educator. Interactive Video lectures can take place, implying that students need to waste time travelling to learn. Also, teachers can communicate visually through the use projectors so that students grasp a better idea of the of the topic being discussed. However, proper training and the implementation of new technologies is time consuming and costly, but beneficial. Additionally, it requires the adaptation of both parties ( teacher and students).

  33. First of all, I agree with the fact that "education and training should be an entitlement for all teachers at all stages in their careers" because this will help to bring a new dimension in the way of teaching and hence help to meet the demands of the new age.So, the initiative taken by VCILT to replace traditional ways of teaching with new technologies is advantageous in the sense that it has help to create an environment that promote an active approach to learn.
However, just like yashine said it is true that for some teachers the new technologies might prove to be an impediment as they might not adapt to them easily but yet with time i think that things will change for better.
Finally I can say that technology has uplifted the quality of education and is undoubtedly of great benefit for the students and teachers.

  34. Firstly, new technologies will definitely enhance professional development as suggested by Professor Bob Moon. The class will be more interactive as teachers are being encouraged to use projectors instead of making students copy lots of notes which is also less time consuming. By so doing, teachers can draw students’ attention more easily and the students will be motivated to work and thus they will understand every concept properly.
Furthermore, students can stay at home and work whenever they want at their own pace. This will also be of a great help to the university as it will be possible to handle more students.
Therefore we can say that VCILT is doing a great job by implementing the online teacher training course.

  35. I totally agree with yashine. Teachers were initially used to the traditional ways of learning and teaching and therefore they can face difficulties with new ways of teaching.

  36. Being in the 21st century new ways of learning and teaching techniques ought to be introduced to facilitate the process. IT and internet since its revolution from 2000, are available mostly everywhere in the country thus it could be the major tool in the educational system. The first to take the initiative was the University of Mauritius in 2001 by implementing the VCILT in order to modernize distance learning while using the IT and internet facilities. This initiation has bear fruit as many students are moving mostly towards VCILT as the latter has enable students to work anywhere at any time whenever free. Also the teaching and learning process has become much more interesting and interactive.
Despite its success, VCILT has bring a disruption in the traditional teaching-learning techniques which may be disapproved by some elderly as new training is required in order to deal with the IT tools.
I agree with Professor Bob Moon to include IT training in the teacher training courses so as to train them professionally to new technologies and more innovative ways in their teaching. The VCILT is making great efforts in order to change the mindset of Mauritian teacher in their way of teaching.

  37. As per Rushaa saying,it is indeed a fact that training is done with teachers using new technologies and distance learning techniques. Thanks to VCILT that our education sym is improving.

  38. I tend to agree to what Vanitha said about the disruption which the VCILT has brought about the need of new trainings. But however we have to bear in mind that even technology is hard to absorb and master, we are bound to implement the new tools as these represent the future educational system which is actually being planned.

  39. We are living in the 21st century whereby there has been a revolution in technology. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created in 2001 in order to modernize the distance education concept by using all the facilities provided by IT-enabled networked systems and the Internet. It has always encouraged teachers to use new technologies and innovative ways of teaching and learning to improve teaching and learning. It has always followed Bob Moon's perspective that teachers should be educated and trained at all stages in their careers so that learners achieve more and schools improve.
According to me the VCILT is doing a great job since this form of teaching and learning has proved to be more beneficial to the students as they are more eager to learn. The lecture is more interesting, animative, colourful and grasp their attention easily. Therefore, the VCILT should continue with its aim!

  40. According to Karishma new technologies will enhance further professional development which is also the view of professor Bob Moon. Introducing multimedia in the classroom has proved to be more effective in enhancing understanding as well as generating critical thinking. So we are bound not to lose track of the newly created technological path.

  41. Since new technologies are gradually englobing the whole world, it was high time for the University Of Mauritius to introduce a better method of distance learning. Therefore the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created in 2001, as said in the article. Since then the VCILT has always been dedicated itself to bring more effectiveness in the way we deals with education.
This process has benefit both the teachers and students. By facilitating and improving the way of interaction in the University (i.e. online discussion) students are being more motivated and more interactive. It also allows the tutors to ensure that all their students are receiving their important notes by sending them through their mails. The students as well can refer to it at any time and any where they want instead of going in the classroom clustered with students and copy the notes (that sometimes the students can’t even hear well) dictated by the tutor.
Students can also be prepared before attending lectures as they are already provided the lecture notes in advance. They can as well post any question on the forum and other can reply to share ideas online instead of asking question in front of everyone and that can be ignored.
Professor Bob Moon has also elaborated on why teachers and students should used this medium of learning specially in the 21st century.
On the other hand, the VCILT has also caused an obstacle in the traditional way we used to learn and it seems that time after time materials such as slates, chalks, blackboard, pencils will not be used.
Secondly, despite of the facilities provided by VCILT, some students tend to ignore lectures as they already have the lecture notes.
Thirdly, being used of this type of system we are coming computer dependent and when there will be network problem or power failure this will cause a great issue to us.
But moreover, it has been very grateful to have the VCILT for the University Of Mauritius as it really benefit many people and even novice can learn from it.

  42. Our era is a world of high and incessant technological innovations. Its beneficial impact is in almost every domain. The purpose of the establishment of VCILT was to promote distant education through technology such as internet. Since its introduction, there have been lots of positive changes in teaching and education. For example for distant learning, student can stay at home and continue their work instead of travelling long distance to reach university. It also avoid the problem of overcrowded classroom. I personally believe that it is less time consuming method, students can be more at ease with modern technologies. However, this system also has drawbacks such as teacher’s refusal to adopt new means of teaching and their willingness to stick to traditional teaching methods. Another disadvantage is that such technology has drawn away people from each other. The possible consequences of such teaching methods is that it may give people yet another excuse to dismiss the need for face to face meetings and interaction. What may result from this phenomenon is a lack of inter-personal and interactive skills.

  43. Introducing new methods of teaching has been quite a challenge, criticized by many.
This innovation has shaken the concept of education as it was believed to be.
Bob Moon encourages the use of technology as he believes that it also benefits to teachers regarding their careers and self achievement. I understand that it was believed that a teacher already mastered teachings skills and that the fact that teachers have to learn about new teachings methods is quite unusual. Bob moon also denotes that using these teaching tools can only result to improvement. He also implies, and I do agree with him that old-fashioned conception of education is inadequate to fulfil nowadays needs in term of education. However, an issue there could be that teachers neglect the pedagogical aspect of education while implementing new educational tools.

  44. Activity-based Learning is the innovative way of teaching and learning. It helps in the understanding of the online courses well and also in changing our way of thinking. Online activity-based Learning is a type of group work, whereby, students can discuss their point of views about a particular work given. This type of learning increases the intellectual of students.

  45. Living in the 21st century, it is high time to include the use of technological advancement in our educational field. With the use of this advancement a point to be noted is that students tend to grasp concepts easily. Teaching is an art, one should master his subject in order to deliver the right and appropriate information to learners. As quoted from the article “Education and training should be an entitlement for all teachers at all stages of their careers”. Respecting the education and training received the educators might deliver information in a precise and concise way hence leading learners reaching the path of success easily. In this modernized world, traditional learning method could be improved by implementing new advancement in the teaching techniques. Before achieving this, appropriate training should be given to educators. As from 2001, the introduction of VCILT at the University of Mauritius has created a positive impact on the tertiary educational level but still the mindset of few educators needs to be changed. Despite having received appropriate training, few educators tend to ignore the use of technology in their teaching method as they find difficulties in adapting with this new system.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I totally agree with yashine.Though proper training has been given to the educators, some do implement it in their classes but there exist some educators who tend to stick to their old traditional ways of teaching as they find difficulties in coping with the new advancements.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The VCILT has employed the advantages of ICT to improve the education system but the dark side of it cannot be ignored also. Professor Bob Moon said that new technologies will definitely enhance professional development. Teachers can incorporate the use of new technology through the use of multimedia to improve over lessons and lectures to make them more interesting. Thus, students will be in a better position to understand and grasp the concept being taught easily. The VCILT is also conducting some courses online for instance, the GEM Educational Technology enabling students to enjoy the comforts of their homes while studying without the need for them to attend classes. However, not everybody is at ease with handling ICT tools especially older people who might resist changes. Furthermore, while doing these types of online courses, there might not be interaction with the teachers and students which might cause some problems.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) has provoked interference in the traditional way the learning process has been conducting in the university. It has proved to be a beneficial interruption since it has amended the teacher training issue and the quality teaching is being done in educational institutions. This new innovation has been trying to make education and training a privilege for all the concerned teachers by conducting online workshops.
However, it should be noted that those people who are not computer trained may find this new innovation difficult and may be unwilling to introduce this new technique in their daily lives. They may be hesitant in using this technological learning and be more at ease in using their traditional way of teaching.
It should therefore be concluded that it is a fact that virtual learning is being implemented but one should not deny the truth that it will take some time for this innovation to overtake the traditional method learning and teaching is being done.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The introduction of the Web 2.0 is one of the recent and user friendly tools to convey information from the different users, in this new era of technology. According to me, this new method of online teaching will certainly draw the attention of many students. The idea of using a blog is even a better method since the information will be shared in a more formal way. Moreover, this new technique will allow students to break out their nervousness and the latter will be able to query about some doubtful topics compared to when they are in class, surrounded by many students. They will be able to learn their lessons at ease, by taking their own time.
However, one cannot deny the fact that owing to the availability the social networks like Facebook and Twitter itself that many students are wasting their time in unnecessary activities.
It can, therefore, be concluded that this innovation will work out but the fact remains that, will it be for educational purposes or for fun, like it is actually happening to the users of other social Networks.

  50. we are living in the 21st century,we live with the pace of technology. An innovation in technology was a necessity.VCILT has finally taken the first initiative. It is a step appreciated by both the students' and teachers'. I totally agree to what professor Bob Moon has said. The implemntation of new technologies is the best way to enhance students' knowledge about technologies and make learning more interesting.According to me VCILT is doing a great job.Students are being more motivated to learn. The instructor can simply post course material on the website which is accessible to all students'.It is more quicker to obtain the course material.

  51. From a VCILT perspective, conventional e-learning systems are based on instructional packets, which are delivered to students using assignments.
Assignments are evaluated by the teacher. In contrast, the new e-learning places increased emphasis on social learning and use of social software such as blogs, wikis, podcasts and virtual worlds such as Second Life.
VCILT computer aided assessment ranging from automated multiple choice tests to more sophisticated systems are becoming increasingly common. Feedbacks can be geared towards a student's specific mistakes or the computer can navigate the student through a series of questions adapting to what the student appears to have learned or not.

  52. With time, the concept of education has also undergone a change. To survive and then to make a positive impact on the existing structure, one needs to stay in touch with the changing needs. As technological advancements are getting imbibed into every stage of one’s life, it was the need of the hour to extend the same to education and the way it is perceived by the young generation. It is wonderful that VCILT has put in much effort to bring about a change in the mindset of teachers in Mauritius. This way of learning can be advantageous as participants can work at their own pace and time. This is invaluable for teachers who have other commitments such as family and jobs. Online teacher education can also provide individualized learning where there is the possibility of student-to-student or student-to-tutor interaction. The wide range of materials available through multimedia caters for various learning styles. Through the group discussion, a rich source of experiences and hence, a rewarding cultural exchange is brought together. However, the disadvantages arise when participants have the feeling of isolation and lack of motivation. Since some cultures are not used to individual learning, some teachers find it hard to keep up with the assignments when tutors and classmates are far away. Many people also feel that socializing is an integral part of the learning process and that exchanging email messages does not compensate for it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I agree with what Vanitha is saying. Since we are living in the modern world, new techniques of learning should be adopted to ease the learning processes. The modern tendency is towards the internet and therefore, it should definitely be utilized as a tool in the educational system. In so doing, the new minds may always come up with new ideas to enhance our educational system.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Technological advancement has enhanced teaching and learning process. By the VCILT, students have no need to come in classes and are able to follow their courses everywhere they want. Via the forum, discussions are taken place between students and teachers and this forum is very fruitful. But in some cases, this new learning process may result to some drawbacks. For example a teacher that has been having face to face classes for several years and due to innovation he has to change his way of transferring knowledge and skills. From my point of view, I don’t think I would be easy for him to adapt to this new method.

    ReplyDelete
  55. VCILT(E-learning platform) has proved its importance for both learners and educators in the learning process in this new era where everything is being ruled by technologies. Therefore, by using technologies in the education system, we are moving towards professionalism. However, there is little use of technologies and we still use make use of traditional process. The fact may still remain the same that new technologies may add efficiencies but not replace the traditional methods of learning. E learning, if, has pros then it also contains cons. Firstly, lack of physical interaction between learners and educators. No direct contact of the peers. Learners with low motivation or bad study habits may fall behind. Instructor may not always be available when students are studying or need help. Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials frustrating.
As for educators they can be more professional in teaching. Can make learning possible for thousands of learners at the same time. Interact in a more professional way. Can educate at their own pace. Less time to produce more work as time is not spent to move to a physical location for learning. Flexibility to join discussions in the bulletin board threaded discussion areas at any hour, or visit with classmates and instructors remotely in chat rooms. Fewer penalties from non-compliance.

  56. In this 21st century, where technology is changing everyday, so it is quite normal for University of Mauritius to adopt distance learning system. With the creation of VCILT,this has proved to be very beneficial to both students and teachers.for example, students can prepare themselves beforehand before coming to lectures. They will help them also in having an idea about what is going to be discussed in class. they can also post their queries about anything in the.
However this has caused difficulties in the traditional and original way of education such as going to school, blackboards etc. As the use of computer is becoming inevitable, this can lead to various types of ploblems in the future or even now itself.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree with Karishma just like she has said that the class will become more interesting and this will attract the attention of the students and this will motivate them to follow more the class.

    ReplyDelete
  58. As Bob Moon says, it is time for teachers to build up their professional capabilities through E-learning. Nowadays, with the broad knowledge available, it becomes difficult to carry out learning activities merely within the classroom, which requires the presence of the learner and teacher at the same time and same place. The learner should be having the chance to decide upon their learning speed and their ability to displace, which can be time consuming. Besides, with the rapid attainment of knowledge and experience, it becomes easy for the working teachers to keep up with the changing innovative world, which can contribute to important developments in human resources, content and technology.

    ReplyDelete
  59. In my opinion, introducing new methods of teaching may bring lot of positive changes towards students. Distant learning benefits the students as they can use it whenever they feel like; they are not pressurized to come to a class so as to attend a lecture. But since distant learning does not involve direct conversation to teachers, the student may stagnate due to a small problem which could be solved if he was in class. According to Bob Moon the use of technology benefits the teachers as well in their careers. It is easier to teach with the aid of a projector(for example it takes more time to draw something than project it in class).

    ReplyDelete
  60. To Em, I accept to what you have mentioned. Introducing this new methods of teaching can fulfill the needs that was missing in terms of education. It is the true that we use to think that teachers already mastered teaching skills but in fact we can see that using this platform are helping them to learn new methods which is really usual. But it is being a success despite that some teachers may neglect the pedagogical aspect as you have said.

    ReplyDelete
  61. To Em :
I don't agree with you when you say an issue could be that "teachers neglect the pedagogical aspect of education while implementing new educational tools".
In fact the implementation of these new tools is to improve their way of teaching by adapting their methods to the environment in which the children are living, that is to a technological world. Then of course it would mean that some pedagogical aspects would be neglected but it would be in favour of a new aspect which will help the children understand more easily than when using the traditional methods.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The VCILT has for aim the introduction of technology in teaching and learning domains as opposed to the conventional way of teaching and learning. Although it has brought about some much appreciated changes in the teaching field, it can be uncomfortable for some. Research has it that ongoing training and education for teachers with the implementation of technologies help learners and the school a lot more. The question that arises is that, how come the teachers are able to inculcate knowledge to the students by using the modern teaching methods if they themselves are not comfortable with the latter?

    ReplyDelete
  63. From my point of view, the VCILT is doing its best to follow Professor Bob Moon perspective by taking initiatives like online workshop to introduce to teachers new technologies and innovative way of teaching and learning. For instance, teachers can send the notes for the next session via the internet and use projectors to do their lectures thus becoming more familiar with technology and to the new generation who were in the yard since their childhood. However we can’t deny that it is difficult to change the traditional way of teaching as even in the modern era students understand better when they have their notes in front of them during the lectures and when teachers write on the board to explain.

    ReplyDelete
  64. That's exactly what I am talking about Yashine. If the teachers themselves are not comfortable with new teaching ways, would they implement these new methods in class? I think not. But even if they do implement them, would they be able to do so properly so that the students will take to these new teaching methods? As we all know that a student's performance in class depends greatly on the teacher's way of explaining, we must be careful so that it might not happen that these new methods of teaching affect the student's performance in a negative way.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The reform brought by VCILT in the education system in 2001 has had its challenges and opportunities as well.
Information and communication has made many innovations in the field of teaching and also made a drastic change from old paradigm of teaching and learning. In the new mode of learning, the role of student is no more important than teachers. The concepts of paperless and penless classroom are emerging as an alternative to the old teaching. I agree with Bob moon`s argument that we need to have interactive teaching and this changing role of education is inevitable with the introduction of multimedia technology.
I believe that VCILT is going a good job in the enhancement of ICT in the educational sector. Learning has become not only become fast but also accessible to everybody. Pedagogy has become more effective and learning process has become is progressing with more understanding.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with what vanitha has said.educational technology really helps in facilitating students' lives and making education more interactive

    ReplyDelete
  67. With the help of VCILT, the educational system has definitely gone up to a new level. Now the classes are more interactive with the help of the new technological tools and online classes help students to work at home, making their lives easier. However, it is difficult for many teachers to adapt to this new educational system and make use of them properly in class. Yet, if we want to progress in this fast growing world we will have to make use of educational technology.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The use of ICT in our educational system may have both positive and negative impact on student, but,to be frank, I can say that, Technology can enhance traditional methods of learning but cannot replace the human touch. The quality of the class will depend solely on the quality of the teacher and not the presence of technology.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I agree with the argument raised by Em about the pedagogy of teaching when using Educational tools. Most of the pedagogical principles that apply to traditional classroom delivery method also apply to the new paradigm of teaching. However, these principles need to be extended to accommodate for the rapid changes in technology. E-learning cannot continue to exist without good pedagogical techniques, nor without integration and consideration on domain-specific knowledge

  70. Teaching ways have always been, and will always be changing. Adopting a new concept, is certainly hard at the beginning, but in due time, it will put to fruition the aspirations it has aimed for from before. Since we are already making use of a website for the University of Mauritius, we can surely go two steps further by using online learning.
This article mentions a lot about the training of the teachers. Well, do we not say that there is no fixed age for learning? It is an ongoing process in life. Like this, everyone can be trained to use IT tools efficiently, and that too, in a short period of time. Moreover, we cannot say that these persons are from the old school since wisdom is what the IT world needs in order to be tamed.
Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Like this, the basics of IT can make a man do prowesses. All we have to do is to put our trust in and never stop believing that when there is a will, there is a way!

    ReplyDelete
  71. The innovative way of thinking of Mr Bob moon on educators is a good way for encouraging education and changing it from what it is everyday. It also shows how Mr Bob Moon is interested and motivated about training for education. While focusing on the continuous professional development, educators will benefit from many advantages. Such as : changing from monotonous, learning new things while educating, more involve in technology, more interest from the students thus easy for them to get their attention, work will be done rapidly giving time for other activities, interesting classes.
Moreover students will feel themselves much more involve in and will make their best.
However, the VCILT has to work on educational technology day by day for innovations and creativity.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Avish Calkee, I somehow agree with you. Technology indeed plays an important role in education today. One of its branches being the promotion of distance learning. However, I do not think that much disruption is still being caused by it. It has been a few years now since news can travel fast enough and reach everywhere. Like this, distance learning forms part of an old concept that is being modernised. Considering this aspect, I take it that any organisation that wishes to use distance, has enough hindsight to be quickly adopted by everyone. Given that everybody already has an idea of how it works, proper planning can be done so that the implementation of distance learning is done, without that much of a problem.

  73. According to me, the University of Mauritius has done a really great thing by creating the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) in order to make e-learning appeared. In fact we must agree to that any technology has got risks associated with its numerous benefits. In the issue of Common Wealth of learning on February 2001, some sections were completely allotted to the teacher training issue. To make the teachers introduced by the new technologies, many initiatives for instance online workshops were created, but nevertheless some teachers may still employ the traditional way of teaching and as well as the learning process.

    ReplyDelete
  74. As said in the article above, the VCILT develops learning environments, contents, transformative approaches and innovative drawing on such integrative models of work, learning and innovation.
I agree with Danhoo Akshaye as he mentioned that there should be a combination of both the face to face contact with the lecturers for teaching and virtual learning. This may help the student to be motivated and pay attention to the subject and help to understand the concepts clearly when it comes to submission of work. On the other hand, the class will be more interactive as teachers are encouraged to use projectors instead of making students copy lots of notes which are more time consuming.

  75. Surely the aim of VCILT was to bridge the gap of the methods of learning from the past centuries to that of the 21st century .The VCILT has been progressing both for students and also for teachers like the introduction of distance learning. As Professor Bob Moon said that “it is time to implement new technologies in teacher training courses so as to focus on the continuous professional development of educators”; he is absolutely right, and by doing so this will help to boost the methods of learning and also the methods of teaching. However the initiation that the VCILT has launched, the use of workshops to train teachers about the use of new technologies in the process of teaching and learning is a good idea as teachers will be able to innovate themselves and enhance teaching methods. Furthermore, Professor Bob Moon highlighted that “there is no way that the institutions of teacher training created for the last century will be adequate for the 21st century needs”; from this we can conclude that the implementation of new technologies in teaching is totally worthwhile and the VCILT is absolutely in the right path.

    ReplyDelete
  76. From what Melina said, I agree that focusing on the continuous professional development, educators will benefit from these advantages as she has listed. The involvement in new technologies may improve the learning and teaching ways in making it more motivating for students.

  77. According to me I can imagine that the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) has done much effort during the past years to boost up technology in the student’s mind as well as teachers. It is also true that technology is changing so fastly that must keep pace with it. We should bare in mind that using technology positively will surely develop us professionally and facilite our task but we should be careful enough as far as concern drawbacks of the technology, therefore precaution is very important.

  78. This article talk about technology in education. Indeed one cannot deny the fact that technology has brought many changes in the way of teaching. It has moved from a traditional way of teaching to a more modern way. Thishas in return motivate students and even teachers as it facilitates their work.I totally agree with Neeshta that University of Mauritius has done an astounding job by introducing VCILT which enables e learning. At the beginning it might prove to be difficult to adapt with the system but gradually it becomes easier.

  79. Schemes such as online workshops were undertaken to initiate teachers to new technologies and establish better ways of teaching and learning. It is obviously a good start but how many teachers or lecturers really put into operation these ideas in their classes or lectures? Have their mindsets truly changed, being traditional individuals with them being prone to traditional learning and teaching methods? I think that at most 30% to 40% of them do really implement their ideas in the field of teaching while the others, would indeed be uncomfortable to try out new teaching ways.

  80. The online activity-base learning has helped a lot in the training of educators. For instance, the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning (VCILT) was introduced at the University of Mauritius for distance learning and it uses all the facilities provided by the network systems and the internet to bring about new improvement in teaching and learning. Professor Bob Moon has rightly said that it’s high time to change and make use of modern technologies in the teacher training course. The online learning and the original and creative ways of teaching proves to be quite advantageous and therefore should be implemented and developed in the education system of Mauritius.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I fully agree with Bob Moon’s statement that says “Time for radical change in Teacher Education.” As our friend Nuzie said, let us not forget that today’s generation is computer literate and technology is an integral part of our life. So the implementation of ICT tools in the education system will be a must in the long run. It also implies that time and space are saved. Teachers will have to make use of these tools to get the attention of students, and even start learning to manipulate these tools if the need arises.

    ReplyDelete
  82. @ geets:
I totally agree with what geets has said. Implementation of technology in our educational system is imperative so as to improve learning. This change has occurred at the UOM thanks to VCILT; teachers are able to make learning “less boring” and technology improves understanding. However, in my opinion the teachers are having fewer difficulties with the enforcement of technology in their style of instilling knowledge to the students. Moreover, it seems less labourious to type notes to present on PowerPoint presentations instead of writing them on boards.

    ReplyDelete
  83. In this fast developing age, learning has undoubtedly crossed the barriers of a classroom where we used to focus only on typical learning materials such as books and copybooks. At the University of Mauritius the online learning process has known a huge evolution with the creation pf the VCILT. As it is a fact that a change always entails boons and banes, similarly at the University of Mauritius, during the first period of the "mise en place" of the VCILT, some teachers encountered some inconveniences to handle the IT tools. But today, in 2011, we observe that the VCILT has been the virtual institution to give a new boost in the learning process at the University of Mauritius. Bob Moon, who stresses on new ways to teach and learn in an article namely "Time For Radical change in Teacher Education" makes us feel proud when we see the we, at the University of Mauritius with the help of the VCILT we have been able to adopt this new way of learning and teaching.

    ReplyDelete

  85. I partially agree to some views put forward by lutchmee. The fact that VCILT has always adapt by continuous improvements at its field therefore the parameter of teaching in classrooms is not only biased but a demotivated innitiative to students. However, education technology has well oriented students performance in IT.

  86. I agree with Avish Calkee. As the system of learning changes with time. As he said that it has created distant learning methods but it is not the only methods of learning as there are much more methods like using use of projectors in lectures, powerpoint, e-books, videos of lectures on youtube.

With these methods, students will find learning more easy and they will enjoy it.

  87. “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow”; John Dewey.
This quotation is an undeniable truth of the 21st century; where the use of technology in teaching has outpaced the traditional way of teaching. New technological methods of learning such as distance learning have been developed. So in Mauritius, the Virtual Center for Innovative Learning was created at the University Of Mauritius with the ultimate goal to modernize the distance education concept by fully utilizing the possibilities offered by IT-enabled networked systems and the internet.
On line teacher training courses increase the accessibility to education for individuals located in remote area, remove barriers of time and space, develop a cost effective approach at providing interactive learning opportunities, and broaden the range of teacher training opportunities and the opportunity to interact online with the trainers and other teachers.
Unfortunately on the other hand, it is not yet fully efficient in providing training because the trainee lacks the direct teaching practice, lacks the appropriate instructional strategies related to online conference, email and also there is the unavailability of frequent learning support.
In addition, technology in classroom keeps students focused and interested, prepare them for the working environment and connect them to real life situation. However its application is limited due to lack of teachers training and monitoring, schools do not spend enough on technology and sometimes students get bored and distracted when working continuously on computers.

  88. Obviously VCILT has made learning easy for students. With time, everyone is becoming computer-literate and there's nothing better than working with ease at home. I don't think that someone should complain that learning at home is worst than working a home. In fact, we can learn at our own pace, try and try until we understand. So, with the mushrooming invention of technologies, learning online promises a nice future.

  89. In this era, pervasive technology has significant implications for higher education. The VCILT was created to change the educational systems which are under increasing pressure to use the new information techniques because today we are living in an immersive computing environment. It has adopted all the benefits of the ICT, thus developing the education system. The creation of VCILT has proved to be very helpful for both the teachers and students. It provides students with the skills to function effectively in this dynamic, information-rich, and continuously changing environment. However it may lead to many problems. There will be less interaction between teachers and students.

  90. The VCILT was created in the bid to modernize the distance education and brought new improvements in the concept of teaching and learning in our 21st century. According to Bob Moon, new technologies is time and necessary to implement in teacher training courses so as the educators are continuously entitled on the new concept of activity based learning. I completely agree with this statement as this will eradicate the traditional method of teaching and motivate student to move along the new innovation of technology and inculcate more skills. This prove to be a plus point for both the educators and the students as it is less time consuming and accessible to everyone.

Bob Moon rightly said “there is absolutely no way the ‘bricks and mortar’ institutions of teacher training created in the last century will be adequate for the 21st century needs.” It's beneficial in the sense that this will bring a new dimension in the way teaching is done. Multimedia learning has multiple advantages, notably for the modern students – eager for technology and sharing of knowledge is definitely a whole lot more interactive.
In the long run, VCILT will improve the level of education in the country and it will surely prove to be a successful technology implementation in the field of teacher training courses in the country.

  94. Nowadays we are living a “push Button” world and the fact that we need new technology cannot be denied. Never did it occur before in the mind of anyone, which such distance learning would take place, but yet, it is happening in the educational system. The target of VCLIT was to modernize the concept of distance education using the full potential of IT-enabled networked systems and the network. Today we can see lots of progress, for example Module registration and admission to the University. This is advantageous as student can apply at any time. The university also gains its benefit because in the meantime, it can handle more students without worrying about space: no need to see if there are free classes for so many students as they will be at their place.
However, it cannot be ignored that the new ways of teaching or training courses which are being offered may prove to be disapproved by the elderly. The use of new technology requires skilled person and well trained person.

  96. E-learning systems
Technology in the 21th century has created major drifts in our living patterns. Technology in the field of education has proved to be very efficient as many students are using it as a method to educate themselves. Students, especially at the University level are making more use of technology. Distance learning is spreading like a wild fire. Some one took the first step, and today so many of our students are beneficiating from it. Long time E-learning was a new form of technology which was rarely heard by our students but today students are making greater use of it especially part-time students.

    Constructive Disruption
Looking at both sides of the coin, we can not deny the fact that technology has both positive and negative sides. But the positive sides of technology are rather dominating on the negative ones. Students are more beneficiating and thus the drawbacks are rather neglected. They are more geared toward education system in a positive way.

  97. This article is base on the introduction of online teaching and the usage of new progress in technology in the teaching system. The online courses is necessary to remove the monotonous of the traditional classes. The implementation of technology for teaching has also some drawback some student prefer to not attend the class has they already know what the teacher would talk about and the teacher also require some training how to present notes and how to made usage of this technology in his advantage. The introduction of this system has made more facilities to the University of Mauritius than drawbacks.

  98. Commenting on what Raiidah on 26 October 2011 at 11:53, I agree that teaching methods is ever changing and to adopt new ones is hard. But in the long run, the innovative ways of teacher training courses will definitely bear its fruits. The world is already in the digital age and no matter how old or young one might be, he is unconsciously in touch with technology. Hence, implementation of technology in this field is more of a boon than a bane.

  99. Dear Melissa I agree with you that there is no age to get update with technology. This would take lots of time to change the routine and behavior of some tutor to be able to use this method hundred percent. This new system provides better facilities for both sides for tutor and student.

  100. Since the various initiatives set up to introduce teachers to new innovative technologies, teachers perceive education differently compared to the traditional way of teaching. In Universities, teachers prefer to use projectors rather than whiteboards. The class becomes more interactive and interesting with the use of technology.
In this article, we learn that the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies(VCILT) is been used as an online web-based education which facilitates the work of educators and ease the learning of students. As said by the Professor of Education at the Open University in UK , Bob Moon, all teachers should be introduced to the digital world of teaching.
Online courses and web-based training have improved in quality as information and communication technology has advanced. Some universities create more educational opportunities by offering some courses entirely on the Internet. These courses offer more flexibility as the students can complete their work within their own schedules Furthermore, those people who wish to pursue further studies while working, can do so using long distance learning through web-based education.

  101. From my point of view, the process of VCILT has enabled the UOM student to understand the technology. This will assist them in broadening their knowledge and become more aware of technolgy. I totally agree with Nazianah that E-learning will develop teachers capabilities. I also agree that education and training should be given at an early so that they will be more proactive and easily adapt to it.They will become more innovative and contribute developments in our country.Students will find it more interesting and may find no boredom in their courses. However there is drabacks that is the effort of the student will not be noticed. So this dedend on some otherwise for others it be beneficial

  102. In a fast evolving world, where technological advancement is booming, Mauritius did not agree to lag behind and it is indeed a very laudable effort than to have set up the Virtual Centre for Innovative Technologies (VCILT). The establishment of the VCILT has taken Mauritius to considerable technological heights and in its wake, it has brought along the concept of technological pedagogy which has dislodged the traditional university setting. It meant new ways of teaching which conform to then new norms; that of being better, more effective learning through technology. All this sounds very good but how far is it effective? It remains to be seen. It is good to have all the educational technologies but to what use would it be if there is no proper knowledge about how to best use these technologies and to exploit their full potential. As the Professor Boon stresses and by using a metaphor of my own to illustrate the point, it is very much like having the tools but lacking the skills to use these tools. One concrete example among us students itself, we’re supposedly from the technology generation, yet if one looks at the many posts in the Facebook group of Educational Technology, one would be surprised. Some and I will include myself in that, did not even know what to do and how do it. Now if we consider teachers, they might as well probably not know the potentials of educational technologies. Technology, yes, but with the accessory knowledge and skills that come along. It is to be noted that it is a good initiative on the part of the VCILT than to launch workshops to initiate teachers to new contemporary issues, methods and technologies.

  103. In this article, it has been seen that the University of Mauritius created the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies in 2001, to integrate in the modern technological era so as to ease the way of teaching. This has undoubtedly paved way for teachers to gain free guidelines towards IT. Moreover, this has indirectly increased the number of IT literates in our small island. Nowadays, teachers like coming in classes with only a pen drive in hand hence facilitating their task of not carrying papers and pen! This way of learning has also proved to be advantageous as participants can work at their own pace and time. Despite proving to be of great benefit, one might find himself unaided in doing some task such as assignments and reports whereby no face-to-face interaction exists between other classmates. Coupled with that, some participants tend to be absent on such platform when required without even submitting their respective assignments. This unfortunately, discourages some teachers from using the new method of teaching.

  104. I definitely agree with what Keshika (26 October 03.02) said. Yes, one must absolutely keep in touch with changing necessities for his own betterment, be it in educational or working field. And undoubtedly, VCILT has enabled us to be part of this change in the educational sector. Learning at own speed or even reviewing notes several times is possible. It can also be beneficial for part-time educators or even part-time participants or those residing far from the institution. Definitely, isolation and lack of motivation are felt at some point in time. However, to some extent I do agree that exchanging email messages do not compensate for it, but in so doing, it is as close to a group discussion which one would rather do when meeting!

    ReplyDelete
  105. As per Manisha saying, since new technologies are gradually englobing the whole world, the University of Mauritius has adopted a better method of distance learning. This has been beneficial to both lecturers and students. Through online discussion, students are being more interactive. VCILT has thus helped in improving the ways lectures are conducted since students get their notes well before through mails; they are thereby well prepared in advance. This helps students become mote interactive and motivated to work better. However, distance learning do have its negative aspects but we must try to make out the best of it so as to pave our way to success.

  106. @ Waahid
I am very agreeable to what you say because I share the same views as you. ICT is very good to keep pace with technological advancement and also to make the most of what technology has to offer to our education but it remains that educational technologies cannot and should not completely eradicate the learning process that occurs in a classroom and through human contact because I believe a good education relies heavily on a good teacher and not on some form of technology.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I agree with you Raiidah. Adopting a new concept is surely going to be hard at the beginning, but with time, the results obtained will be worth all the pain of adapting to the technology. Using online learning makes students’ and educators’ work easier and quicker once the IT tools are learnt to be used efficiently. Any people can benefit from this technology if the person knows the basics of IT.

  108. This article relates to the training of in-service educators via online activity-based learning. Activity-based learning describes a range of pedagogical approaches to teaching. Its core premises include the requirement that learning should be based on doing some hands-on experiments and activities. The goal of activity-based learning is for learners to construct mental models that allow for 'higher-order' performance such as applied problem solving and transfer of information and skills. New information and communication technologies make it possible to develop and deliver multimedia learning objects for activity-based learning.

With the creation of the virtual centre for innovative learning technologies (VCILT), the concept of distance learning was modernized by making full use of the benefits of IT and the internet. It has brought positive changes to the way teaching is done and to the training of educators. Bob Moon, Professor at the Open University of UK, argued that it is high time to have major changes in the concept of pedagogy. I agree with the fact that teachers have the right to benefit from further education and training throughout their career, including the implementation of new technologies. This proves to bring real professionalism to educators and so, the students will eventually benefit from this enhancement. With the 21st century in mind, the training of teachers cannot be done as it was in the past with face to face education, to meet the needs of this century.

In Mauritius, to cater to the changes in the pedagogic world, the VCILT has taken the initiative to invest in bringing changes to old school of thoughts with respect to teaching-a fundamental need in this information revolution era.

According to me this is a good start for innovating pedagogy as it the students who is going to benefit from the long run. This concept however, may take time to be fully implemented as there is already the traditional system of teaching which is established.

  109. Comment on the article “Plenary Speech at the 18th International Conference on Learning” from Soobrattee M. Mouddassir.
VCILT was born from the race to keep track to the high pace advancing eLearning system and since by 2001 Information Technology (IT) and internet were no longer aliens to us, it proved to be really advantageous. However, those from the ‘old school’ would certainly like to remain with the white chalk and blackboard.
But as Bob Moon clearly stated in his article: “Time for Radical Change in Teacher Education” in the “Connections” magazine; I quote: ”there is absolutely no way the ‘bricks and mortar’ institution of teacher training created in the last century will be adequate for the 21st century needs”. End of quote. This comes into play with the developing and emerging Commonwealth of Learning (COL) countries. They would not be having qualified or even experienced trainers for teachers; this is where Open and Distance Learning (ODL) comes into play. The knowledge and experience of overseas trainers to the help of developing COL countries teachers.
At the University of Mauritius, VCILT has certainly change perception of teachers about education in Mauritius. But, the major problem still poses as a threat to the ‘connection’ of teachers to their students. Online workshops, online capacity building, online professional development program for Master’s level and many more are obtained from the Online Educational Resources (OER). Personally, online in here represents the mean of obtaining information or training via the internet on a screen. Unfortunately, have we classes of 20 to 30 students online on a screen? The ODL is certainly an innovative master piece but it lacks in direct contact with students. However, let us remain optimistic and IT prone; let’s say the solution to this problem is certainly on its way.

  110. According to me,all teachers should benefit from the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Techologies(VCILT)at all stages of their careers. The main reason is that it is teachers who educate the future generation. They impart whatever knowledge they have to their students. So why not give the teachers themselves facilities to improve their teaching skills? it is a fact that most youngsters nowadays use technology in their everday life and they are more interested in IT than anything else. Therefore by using their most loved technology to teach them can capture their attention. Teavhers should be encouraged to keep pace with the new generation and this in a way break the gap between these two generations. However i would like to add that being totally dependent on technology is no good either. I think that some sessions must comprise of some written works and lectures as well. some face to face contact wil add a more personal touch to any course, and this can be possible via skype nowdays for online distance courses.

E-learning has been proved to be very advantageous but not to forget what is an advantage for some can be a disadvantage for other.

  113. Since its foundation in 2001, the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) has undeniably brought about new ways of teaching and learning for both tutors and students. However, as every cloud has a silver lining, a fact remains that the latter has tried to disrupt the traditional way of pedagogical and educational practice. As per the article, we cannot limit ourselves with only what we have got. Technology never remains the same. Innovations bring about better and safer ways of understanding and manipulating better. Just as in case of the teachers training courses whereby the continuous professional development of tutors is a must but we cannot neglect the impact it will have on the former system. In my opinion, since education and training never stops, teachers should always be given the opportunity for their career development. Moreover, bringing about such changes will boost up the ICT sector of Mauritius. It will surely prove to many of us that not only the younger generation has the right to access to innovative concepts but the elder people are concerned as well and this is a very remarkable initiative taken by the VCILT.

  114. The introduction of Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) at University of Mauritius has many benefits as well as disadvantages. Doing online module or using the internet to send notes help us in reducing paper as teacher do not need to give handout. This also help the university to accommodate more students for a particular module and the number of students may be limitless, no need to provide a classroom or wasting time in search of a free classroom before a lecture and this waste time. This has improved the relationship between students and lecturers so lecturers can send notes in several days before classes hence students can read and get prepared before the classes. Lecturers can also send mail to inform if they would be absent and no time wasted for students to attend class and wait for a lecturer who would not come. In the same time, students can communicate with any lecturer via e-mail if they have encountered a problem during an assignment and therefore no need to take an appointment.
Unfortunately this type of interaction can be a inconvenience for some students as not all of them have internet connection at home and finding a free time to go to CITS to work on slow and defective computer is not suitable. This method of interaction via the web causes a problem since many students will not give full attention in lectures or simply do not come to classes as all notes would already have been sent by e-mail.

Actually the majority of students have internet connection at home but not all, so this system of online studies do not benefits to those who have no access to the web, and those one are penalised. And you also said that this helps shy students but unfortunately this online studies have a more negative effects on them and hence those students become more shy.

  116. Based on Em's views,
I also stand by your side that old-fashioned concept of education is inadequate for good learning and teaching nowadays. However, we can't ignore the fact that even learners from traditional system have been successful. These technologies that we are using nowadays have been invented by the traditional learners. So, we can't raise fingers or go against the ability and efficiencies of traditional way of teaching and learning. It can be said that traditional way cannot be replaced but can be improved by the use of new technologies and these new technologies have been created mainly to ease the tasks of learners and educators and also increase performance in relatively shorter periods.

  117. Surely the aim of VCILT is bring a revolutionary method of teaching where learning can be done in any geographic location and there are no travel expenses. Taking class anytime anywhere is a major benefit.Students have the advantage of learning at their own pace.Lecturers can send notes in several days before classes which will be more convenient for student. They can also learn through a variety of activities that apply to many different learning styles. Learners can fit e-learning into their busy schedule. However, learners need to have access to a computer as well as the Internet. They also need to have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail. Without these skills and software it is not possible for the learner to succeed. Some Student also have Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials difficult. We are living in a world where technology is used every day, everywhere and every time; there is no place for the traditional.

I completely agree with what Noureen has stated. The VCILT has, through years, brought about remarkable developments for the betterment of the teaching sector. Multimedia teaching and learning is a very sensible approach as this will surely both fascinate and encourage students to take to their education more seriously as they would do otherwise. As stated earlier, the application of this new technology will surely be of great benefit during the years to come for the whole country as well as for the ICT sector.

  119. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created to modernize the concept of distance education using the full potential of IT-enabled networked systems and the Internet. Since its inception, we can see that a lot of progress has been made, particularly in the world of education. For university students, this has decreased their pressure somehow. They do not have 2 attend 4-hours lectures to learn but can instead do it at home. The university also gains as it does not have to worry about accommodating students doing these particular modules and these classes can be therefore used by other students. The VCILT not only changed the traditional way of doing things but also the mentality of people. It brought about a change of mentality in the way teachers perceive education in Mauritius especially in relation to the revolution of the information that we have seen in Mauritius from 2000 and above. Several initiatives have been undertaken to introduce teachers to the digital world. Even though we live on a small island called Mauritius, we are moving if not in pace with technology but close to it. Soon we will have our analogue generation overshadowed by the digital generation.

For sure this concept of has brought a lot of advancement in the educational field, especially the way of teaching. but we must also agree that the traditional manner of a bunch of students sitting in front of of a teacher bring about the seriousness and involvement of students in their studies. this is how the targeted learning outcomes are finally achieved. so, the way of teaching does not really matter if the student is not serious in the studies. at the same instant, the modernity add flavour to studies, which can bring about more interest and involvement for the student.

  120. In reply to what nuzie has said (17th October 2011), indeed the new generation would for innovations and new technologies. But the elder generation might object to this. And there are few reasons why they might not agree to this. Students having online modules have to stay for hours sitting in front of a pc(not every student possess a laptop) and this is resulting in convulsion of peoples health. Diseases like cardiac problems and spinal pain has witnessed a rocketing increment among the masses especially the youngsters. Nevertheless online modules are convenient but not all modules should be made online.

As Mauritius is a very small island and we get a lot of tourists coming from all parts of the world, we are prone to get several epidemics among which some can be quite severe. I also agree when Melissa says that the perception of education has change nowaydays and the change from analogue to digital is true and is for the best.

  123. With the advent of technology, it is time to modernize our educational system.New technologies will definitely enhance professional development as said by Professor Bob Moon.In today's era where many students are computer-literate, it is important for lecturers to cope with the use of technological devices such as projectors to explain their notes and thus saving time of the students instead of copying notes they can receive it by mail.

  124. Innovation in the field of education would indeed bring a number of advantages to both students and teachers. Although initiatives and online workshops are undertaken to introduce new technologies to teachers and changing the methods of teaching, it would still be rather difficult for some teachers and lecturers to abide to this new system as they have been using the traditional methods of teaching for years and years and now changing to this new ways of teaching could be a rather difficult task and this could apply to elderly teachers who are prone towards traditional teaching methods.

So the implementation of ICT tools in the education system will be a must in the long run. It also implies that time and space are saved. Teachers will have to make use of these tools to get the attention of students, and even start learning to manipulate these tools if the need arises.

  126. Personal Appraisal on the article: ‘Training of In-Service Educators through Online Activity-based Learning’
Indeed, the educational landscape as well as the ‘new learners’ in the 21st century has dramatically shifted from the ‘brick and mortar’ model. Today, most students including educators themselves rely mostly on the Internet, and research databases for research work and other assignments.
Having started this module, and experiencing a new concept of studying, that is at my own pace with some set deadlines of course, has helped me organise my time for efficiently, as I am ‘time bound’ to the strict schedules of attending classes at specific times.
It is no doubt that though having some drawbacks, new educational methodologies are here to stay and continuing to evolve hence keeping abreast with it is essential for educators and enabling them to get trained with such technologies will evidently help into passing on the fruits down to the students.
Furthermore, with the support of the Open University of UK, which collaborates even with BBC on specific programmes, VCILT and all stakeholders will benefit greatly.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Undoubtedly VCILT has really modernized the distance education concept by fully utilizing the possibilities offered by IT-enabled networked systems and the internet. E-learning is increasingly being utlilised by students nowadays and I agree on the fact that ‘bricks and Mortar’ institutions teacher training is not sufficient for the 21st century needs. Also if teachers are being trained and educated at all stages in their careers it would be of great benefit for students to have online classes where students can learn at their own pace and time.

  134. I would like to reply to the comment of Rusha. The VCILT has surely invested much to revolutionise distance learning by having online courses but however these methods do not allow direct teacher practice which is indeed important. Also, it has been reported that frequent learning support is unavailable and online in-service training is not yet the prevalent method to provide training. In addition, even though the VCILT has invested much to introduce technology in the teaching atmosphere, many of our educators cannot or are reluctant to put these applications into practice since schools can hardly spend on these expensive educational technologies, and not every student can afford to have a laptop at their disposal. Also many educators lack the proper training for the effective application of these technologies. So there is much to be done in this race of online training and the application educational technology in the teaching atmosphere.

The use of ICT in teaching and learning activity help to improve the quality of education and many initiatives have been set about to introduce teachers about new innovative technologies .
Also to be noted that the online or learning by distance is not to be considered as an obstacle to the traditional way of teaching (teacher in a classroom with students which are physically present, usually not mentally).

  139. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created in bid to implement the modernization of E learning in Mauritius.

  140. According to me, the VCILT can use the different facilities provided by ICT to improve the learning process but this may as well bring many problems. The VCILT can enhance the professional development. Teachers may use it as an innovative tool to enhance the teaching process. The teacher may encourage more students to learn and participate in the learning process. The VCILT will also allow the full use of IT and network systems in order to make a lot of progress and improve the teaching process. Thus new way of teaching indeed, appears to be more appreciative and promising. Nowadays, the use of VCILT has allowed teachers to do teaching online; students may learn from home and also teachers can make use of projectors instead of boards.
However, we cannot deny the fact that some elderly teachers may be reluctant to these changes and thus not adapting themselves to this new system. This will have a great impact on the students learning process as they may need to abide to the old learning process.

  143. I agree with Yashine. Though it is a better idea to implement E-learning in the capacity-building of teachers, many may not adapt to this new method. A sudden change in their teaching and learning ways may make them feel uncomfortable and hinder the transfer of knowledge process.

  144. Online based activity is a good initiative. Since 2001 the VCILT has always been dedicated itself to bring more effectiveness in the way they deal with education. Furthermore the target of VCLIT was to modernize the concept of distance education. As Professor Bob Moon, mentioned it enhanced the professional development of educators. We students living in a world of technology should make maximum use of this technique. It also facilitates our lives thus makes learning more interactive and interesting. This method of learning enables educators to send important mails at any time.
However despite of the facilities provided by VCILT, some students tend to ignore lectures as they already have the lecture notes. This type of system makes us become computer dependent and when there will be network problem or power failure this will cause a great issue to us. The use of new technology requires skilled person and well trained person.

  145. @ Azie: I fully believe that teachers who in past used traditional methods will find it a new experience to use technology to share their knowledge. It will not be boring for teachers as it is an innovative and modern way of teaching. I don’t think it will be difficult for them to adapt to these changes in this advanced age of technology.

  146. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) was created to change the perception of distance learning and teaching thanks to the advantages offered by computers and the internet. For example, we now have online modules where we work and submit homeworks online. The VCILT might change the way learning and teaching takes place. In online learning, media, including video, audio and digital communications are used as tools to help facilitate a student’s learning.
In online learning, technological media, including video, audio and digital communications are used as tools to help facilitate the learning process. Technologies such as projectors etc make the lecture becomes more interesting and different.
This concept has to be put to practice.
Only then will we know whether or not it is going to be useful or not.

I agree that students get bored and easily distracted when working continuously on computers in spite of the many advantages that online learning has to offer. Blogs have to be designed so as to ensure that the user remains focused.

  148. Since its inception, the Internet has indeed been making continuous and discontinuous changes in the sense that businesses have drastically changed. As far as Education is concerned, responsible authorities should grap the opportunity that technologies bring and introduce new concepts and ideas likewise. Otherwise, particularly in Mauritius, we will always be lagging behind and not realise our true potential. For instance, there are some disciplines that are best teach via distance learning whereby in the traditional form, students and teachers or lecturers lose precious time doing things that could have been done faster and more persistently using the online platform.
Innovating towards e-Learning is a rewarding concept since for example, a good majority of students of the University of Mauritius resides in places that are relatively far from the Campus and they lose time in transport everyday. Nowadays time is such a precious and non-renewable asset that cannot be afforded by any individual to be lost. This is one of the major benefits that can make a difference in the system of Education in Mauritius.
In addition, students, from an early should be encouraged and tutored how to the World Wide Web efficiently and productivity. This good habit shall entails better results since the Internet certainly brings massive benefits and advantages but of course do has its downsides and disadvantages.

  150. According to me, the virtual centre for innovative learning technology has made the first step toward E-learning in Mauritius. but there is a long way to go since it is a newly implemented project and teachers as well as learners will take some time before mastering the learning technologies. However the new generation of teachers are interested also qualified in IT, so the mindset of Mauritian is changing gradually. In the run against time the traditional way of teaching and learning is about to change in the near future.

  151. VCILT has grasped the opportunity of introducing E-learning in Mauritius. This has been possible only because this is the twentieth century. It's highly effective and modern but can it really be claimed that "there is absolutely no way the ‘bricks and mortar’ institutions of teacher training created in the last century will be adequate for the 21st century needs"? We are in the 20th century and this is still happening. It cannot be said that with the advent of new ways of learning, traditional methods of learning have disappeared. However, as the world witnesses more revolution in the field of technology,a change in the mindsets of people have occured. This is why online workshops are so successful today.

  152. The virtual centre for innovative learning technologies (vcilt) is responsible for providing and developing on-line web-based education and telelearning at the university and throughout the country.
VCILT currently develops academic modules for the university and pedagogical prototype projects in line with the national ongoing effort for the promotion of ICT, continuous education and lifelong flexible learning.
VCILT supports academics and tutors with technology, pedagogical and management tools for the conception, multimedia presentation and networking of their contents and activities. The VCILT complete e-learning environment gives access to academic program for large group of students.

  153. In this article, it has been seen that the University of Mauritius created the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies in 2001, to integrate in the modern technological era so as to ease the way of teaching.Today, most students including educators themselves rely mostly on the Internet, and research databases for research work and other assignments.

  155. The VCILT will definitely enhance professional development as said by Professor Bob Moon. Online Learning now plays a significant part in the curriculum of many schools and universities as lecturers place lecture notes and work for further study on the internet

  156. The advent of the computer has indeed revolutionised the world. Since its creation, technologies has evolved, flourished and cherished. These technologies fully meets the needs of the modern century. In our learning institutions educational technologies are welcomed with arms wide open since of its numerous virtues to both students and pedagogues. Besides, as stated by Professor Bob Moon, “Time for Radical Change in Teacher Education” which is indeed correct but, however, we should not ignored experienced traditional educators who may not be convenient with this new approach and it is for the best. Till the time, VCILT has greatly contributed in terms of efforts , new methods for the enhancement of e-learning.

  157. The article presents the creation of the VCLT as a major breakthrough in the history of teaching at the University of Mauritius. The aims behind the project were to keep up with the new trend of distance learning by using the facilities of the internet. It is further said that the VCLT has taken up the task of training teachers for them to master the new technological facilities and bring up innovative changes in their way of teaching. This transformation is according to the article a way of bringing about more efficient teaching and learning.

However , I find that though the article brings about many optimistic concepts it does seem to promote online learning as a categorical “need” of the 21st century which is not always true or applicable arbitrarily. I personally believe that the traditional way of teaching ( direct contact between teacher and student) has its own good. For example it helps to promote a feeling of belongingness to the institution and peers and forges the characters of students to work in mutual understanding, receptivity and cooperation. The University of Mauritius has still a long way to go as to what concerns distance teaching and learning but VCLT does seem to present a zeal that we can appreciate and encourage.

  158. technology in the field of education has proven to be very beneficial to student as they are making use of this method to learn more. there are also some courses which are done fully online. this is a plus point as the student does nit need to travel every day to go to the university to attend lecture class. they learn every thing at home only.

    1. It is true what you have said. the new technologies is very helpful to students. class are more interesting to follow. online courses have many advantages like the student does not have to travel to the university to attend the courses. but this also has a disadvantage, like assignment might not be returned on time.

I agree with you to some extent, it does have a lot of benefit in terms of time, cost and ease of learning in your own environment. However i do believe that it equally has some drawbacks. E-learning may discourage critical thinking as one is more likely to browse and look for the answer online and copy paste. While it can be a useful way to learn for certain it may not be the case for others since it each individual is better adapted to a particular way of learning.

  159. The article is based on the fact that how IT-enabled network system is being implemented to guide teachers at the university of Mauritius of how to use e-learning for online courses. According to me, such method is less time consuming and less money consuming. Teachers do not have to engage their time in giving lectures. Using this new innovative system, lectures can be given to unlimited students. In this way no classrooms or lecturers are required and hence, it is less costly for the university itself. Moreover, the system helps student to get use to the internet and online tutorial. However, with such type of learning, student do not really pay attention. In my opinion, a combination of both classroom and e-learning lectures would give a better result of academic knowledge in the future.

  160. There is a growing consensus that improving student’s learning depends on a teaching force with appropriate beliefs and attitudes towards teaching and learning. While initial teacher training nurtures these characteristics, it is indeed insufficient to prepare teachers for greater challenges of everyday teachings. There is lack of adequate and appropriate opportunities for most practising teachers to enhance their skills and align their practice to the reform visions in education.
Like in the University Of Mauritius we have the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) and this has change our way of communicating with others. VCILT has been of great help for the students as well as for the teachers.

yes I agree with you, in fact the may lose this pressure of 'writting in your own word' as in the traditional classroom because they will be free to copy and paste answers from web as they won`t be under the supervision of a teacher. While in a class you may guess the most important points that need to be known from the educator as he/she may highlights the important issue or put more emphasis on a particular part of the work or either from the tone of the voice or enthusiasm when teaching something.

  162. The Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) aims at creating a new and modern way of learning. Distance learning is becoming more and more important and the centre is investing a lot on resources to promote this new form of learning. Ever since its implementation we have known a lot of progress especially in the educational field. A common example for university students is the gradual introduction of online modules whereby students are learning by themselves in the comfort of their home, at any time. This also solves the problem limited seats available at the university. The VCILT has been able to transform and give a new dimension to a new and effective way of teaching and learning at the same time. Tutors are more exposed to the digital world whereby they use innovative and more sophisticated way of teaching

  164. At the University of Mauritius, there is the Virtual Centre for Innovative Learning Technologies (VCILT) which manages the online in-service teacher training. This process is to improve the quality of teacher training.

The VCILT aims for the development of teachers, to encourage innovative learning and teaching practices through the use of technology. Also, to increase access to tertiary education. Precisely, lectures can be given to unlimited students; no need to worry whether to get a seat at the UOM or not.
As suggested by Professor Bob Moon, new technologies will definitely boost professional development. Teachers will acquire new strategies and efficient ways to seize the attention of the students for any lectures.

Teachers in all level of education must be for the implementation of new technologies in education as this would help educational institutions to enhance teaching and learning process. But we must not overlook teachers who are not computer literate. These teachers might not like the idea of being trained in order to change their preset methods of work. The online practicums are good schemes to enlighten the teachers to the new technologies as they learn how to make their work become more innovative.

As said by Professor Bob Moon, new technologies will definitely boost professional development. New technology plays an important role the educational sector, with the help of technology distance learning methods was created. Even students would find the class more interactive if the lecturer would make use of latest technology in explaining things to them. The class will be more interactive as teachers are being encouraged to use projectors instead of making students copy lots of notes. The lecture is more interesting, animated and colourful.

  166. Bringing some innovative changes such as virtual learning in the educational system is a must. It is a fact that most of the youngsters are computer literate and using the social network as a mean for teaching will boost their interest in learning as they will surely enjoy this new system. Virtual learning offers more benefits for instance its time saving, and the student can work at a time of his convenience. However we should not neglect the fact that some teachers or lecturers may find difficulties to adapt to this new mode of teaching and would more likely opt to their traditional ways.
