e-Learning Insight

“ eLearning ?? What’s the big deal? Just go on Moodle.org, download and install the learning platform, put some contents, enrol your students and there you go!” Well that would be the first reaction of any newly employed IT graduate or the recently recruited academic e-learning enthusiast. With such a recipe at hand, any new e-learning initiative is bound to be a disaster.

What does it take to have successful eLearning in an institution? What are the day-to-day issues that an academic involved in teaching online has to deal with? To what extent is prior planning important? What are the implications of adopting innovative pedagogies for a transformation of the learning process? Why is online teaching different to self-learning? How is eLearning similar and different to traditional distance education concepts? What are the mistakes that policy makers generally do in trying to get eLearning to kickoff in their institutions, in particular traditional institutions?

Recently during a visit to the University of the South Pacific, where I met with some academics from the Open University UK, from Scotland and from Jamaica just to name a few, all of us recognized that whether you are in a developed or a developing country did not really matter, the problems and issues related to eLearning are pretty much the same. We just had a one week in Mauritius in the company of our external examiner from Malaysia, and in the context of the research week 2010 of the University of Mauritius, our newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, who apparently has intensive experience in the field highlighted the same issues, which were mainly the findings of the MASSIVE project. But the real debate is not around the issues because everyone knows about them through peer exchanges, their own experiences or from research findings, but very few of us, have found effective and efficient solutions to these. There have only been possible solutions that were put forward and not concrete reports or evidence of any solutions that worked and that can be applied de-facto elsewhere to solve existing concerns.

  1. I totally agree with what the issue is and this is a very serious issue which not just concern the 'IT people' but all the people. E-learning is being more and more frequently used by all people, which is distant learning done at home or wherever online. That's true that there is a big difference between what we learn online and what we learn by our self as while learning by ourselves, we are more concentrated and thus by the online learning, that's not the case as the type of learning is boring and it is also said that people use more printed materials for learning. There should also be interactions with the learner and the teacher e.g. use of Skype for communication as is makes the teaching more interesting and understandable while someone is in front of you and making you understand the concepts and if there is a problem, you just need to stop and ask question, where the e-learning platform does not provide this. Lastly, we must plan much before as we should know what we should do for the next time and update it however, one should not upload all the plans as the learner will complete it at a go in a rather light way in the aim of completing the course faster as possible. That's what the VCILT has done, each week you get your task to do and there is also the possibility of communicating between your friends and teachers not only by chatting but also by visual display also.

  2. E-learning has substantial benefits and offers unique opportunities for people who might otherwise have limited access to education and training. It incorporates innovative and creative approaches to instruction and provides unprecedented access to resources and information.
    •E-Learning is student centered.
    •E-Learning is self-directed and self-paced.
    •E-Learning is interactive and hands-on.
    •E-Learning is flexible.
•E-Learning provides consistent and effective training.
Although e-Learning has many benefits for students and organizations alike, it also has limitations.
•Computer literacy and access to equipment.
•Some topics are not appropriate for e-Learning.
•Students themselves can be a limitation to e-Learning.
    Strategies for e-Learning Success
    •E-Learning requires motivation and self-discipline.
•Define your goals and plan for success.
•E-Learning requires good reading and writing skills.
•Incorporate work, life, and other educational experiences as part of the learning process.
•Be willing and able to commit adequate time to the e-Learning process.
•Have access to the necessary equipment and create some personal space.
To be a successful e-Learner you must believe that meaningful, high quality learning can take place without a traditional classroom. When properly designed and executed, e-Learning is a highly effective and rewarding learning environment.

  3. When I first heard of e-Learning I wondered what is e-Learning. Wikipedia offers the following definition: “E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching.”
I thought to myself that this is a huge step towards our technological advancing world. Self-teaching made possible, peer-to-peer ideas and concept exchanges such as this blog, ability to learn and work at your own pace amongst many others are now realities. Hence, I do think that e-Learning is one great step towards a better education.
E-Learning has allowed compensating some of the flaws of the conventional methods of teaching via its ability to self-teach the students and to allow students to access information more easily and to learn them at their pace.
Now coming to this article, I will not say that e-Learning is flawless or is the best way of teaching. I do agree that it has a lot of issues as mentioned and that no one yet has an answer to them. However, I do believe that we have to remain optimistic and use it as a tool. From being a kid, I have always learnt that there is no bad teacher in the world just since by listening and taking only the relevant information, you will still learn something. Hence, e-Leaning as a teaching tool, will contribute a lot towards a better education as it will provide with all the information required.
I do believe that it is too early for e-Learning to be used at its full extent. I think that for the time being, until more innovations come in the e-Learning environment with better pedagogical systems or any sort of improvement, e-Learning must be used as a complement of the conventional teaching methods.

  4. This issue seems to be real. In this technology world, one should be independent and work on their own pace. Therefore everyone should start learning how to use the technologies to be able to self-study. One should not be dependent on teacher and with time in this busy world one one will not be able to go to classes regularly to attend lectures and therefore they will have to study on their own.

  6. E-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. E-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts. Some of the most outstanding advantages
    • Reduced overall cost is the single most influential factor in adopting e-learning. The elimination of costs associated with instructor's salaries, meeting room rentals, and student travel, lodging, and meals are directly quantifiable. The reduction of time spent away from the job by employees may be the most positive offshoot.
    • Expert knowledge is communicated, but more importantly captured, with good e-learning and knowledge management systems.
    • Self-pacing for slow or quick learners reduces stress and increases satisfaction.
    • On-demand availability enables students to complete training conveniently at off-hours or from home.
E-learning is not, however, the be all and end all to every training need. It does have limitations, among them:
    • Technology issues of the learners are most commonly technophobia and unavailability of required technologies.
    • Printed materials are more suitable than having all the notes online. It allows the student to capture information more easily rather than being tied to a computer for hours.
    • Reduced social and cultural interaction can be a drawback. The impersonality, suppression of communication mechanisms such as body language, and elimination of peer-to-peer learning that are part of this potential disadvantage are lessening with advances in communications technologies.
No single e-learning method is best for every learning need. You will most likely need to use several e-learning technologies as well as traditional learning methods. A blended learning program combines e-learning and traditional learning methods. Blended learning can provide the convenience, speed and cost effectiveness of e-learning with the personal touch of traditional learning.

I do not agree with the point that this process is to early to use as it has been using since many years even at the university there are slides, where we are taught especially 3d drawings and accurate graphs and are not being used at school as we consider that the children are not mature and need spoon feeding. We must also see if whether it is an appropriate method at the specified place whether we can use it or not. E-learning has taken a good dimension even the VCILT is using this method

  8. E-Learning – A new way of learning.
That is, with time we can see how the way of educating students evolved from the traditional face to face learning to learning via the internet or by courses provided on audio or video tapes. To a certain extent we can say it is the most efficient way since we can get access to our courses anywhere and at anytime. We are not compelled to go into a class and follow a lecture where we have to take notes as the lecturer does the class. With E-Learning, we can have a look at our courses as long as we want and make important notes from it. Moreover, we do not know the lecturer personally, so there is no need to be afraid of him/her. If we have contact with the lecturer whenever possible it is even better, just like the VCILT Supergem gives us the facilities of contacting our lecturers whenever we want by sending e-mails or messages on Skype. We can say that in this way, we feel free to clear any doubts we have on a particular subject and we are sure to be going on the right track.
However, it is true that E-Learning can be problematic also. This can be in the sense that if we are used to following lectures under the guidance of a lecturer teaching in class itself, there can be adaptation problems. Some students also tend to forget about being up to date with the lectures since it is online and it can also be associated to the way the mind functions. That is, when we have to attend a class and face the lecturer we feel compelled to do the work so as not to hear a lot of taunts or hear the lecturer telling us that he/she will not give us any marks.

The concept of E-Learning has helped students in different ways. They are more at ease to express themselves. Anywhere and at anytime they can access the learning platform. Hence, a more flexible and convenient technique to learn. There are many benefits than drawbacks and these cannot be ignored. Some students may feel isolated and unsupported while learning. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without assistance. Moreover, others may have problem in getting through the lecture, submit a work or if there is a new programme they will have to work with, they may not be able access it without proper instructions. Thus, learners may feel discourage and bored with no interaction. This type of learning requires time and learners must be responsible and motivated enough to complete the module on their own.

  12. The benefits of e-learning is clearly motivated. But we must also note that However we must note that computers will never completely eliminate human contact and other forms of teaching. We must know what are the advantages of and how will they be beneficial to us.
E-learning enables students to work at home whether they are rapid or slow learners.

e-learning will never eliminate the need for printed workbooks or reference material
Morever, reduced social and cultural interactions may be a a limitation. e-learning eliminates body language and peer-to-peer learning that are essential components in studies.
The advantages and disadvantages of e-learning vary depending on the goals and audience. But it is clear that e-learning is rapidly growing and will guarantee its role in their overall learning strategy.

First of all, one definition of E-learning among many others; is the use of use of technology to enable people to learn at anytime and anywhere. E-Learning can include training, the delivery of just – in – time information.
Nowadays, e-learning is becoming very popular and it is a very good thing but traditional learning must not disappear. For e.g. a mathematics class, is must more understanding in traditional than online.
To conclude, no single e-learning method is best for every learning need. You will most likely need to use several e-learning technologies as well as traditional learning methods. A blended learning program combines e-learning and traditional learning methods. Blended learning can provide the convenience, speed and cost effectiveness of e-learning with the personal touch of traditional learning.

  14. After having read this article, I realized that before I also had the same perception as mentioned in the first paragraph about e-learning, but ever since I enrolled for this module, I understood that e-learning is not only about going on the internet and searching for pieces of information. It is a more interactive way of learning than I was thinking especially when we share our opinions and when we are able to view our friends’ outlook on the same subject. Moreover it is also broad-based learning as we have the opportunity to work together with distant people. Now when looking at the problems the article bring up, I am of the same mind as the problems are not actually about the issues identified as we are already aware about them. But they are rather the unknown solutions which will resolve the problems and allow e-learning to be universal. I personally believe that if we all have a positive and confident impression about e-learning it will definitely be a means for education. As the adage says, “little by little, the bird builds its nest”, I believe that here also, just like birds, with constant struggle not to lose heart, we’ll be able to make to the outcome be a success.

  15. Hi Michael!
Regarding what you said in the last paragraph, about the fact that it is too early to implement e-learning alone as a teaching method is very true because, the e-learning environment has not yet been able to catch the attention of everybody as some still prefer paper-based material to learn as they just can’t deal with it online or others find it boring as they still need that actual, real and tangible interaction as they don’t get by the virtual one. Well just like you, I’m also for e-learning as “a complement of the conventional teaching methods”, as frankly speaking alone I don’t find it very efficient for everyone, may be for some it’s ok, but I feel like then it would be very unfair if we favor the majorities only at the detriment of the minorities who are not able to cope with such a learning method.

  16. In this era of high technology, where one is always finding ways to replace the traditional methods by computerised system in most of the fields, teaching and learning could not be left untouched. E-learning is the effort to modernize teaching and learning. It brings along new methods of interaction and deliveries. However, the success of e-learning depends to a great extent on how the concept is being transmitted and on the policies that the institutions providing online learning facilities adapt. They must ensure that they are providing guides and online resources for using this method especially for those who are new to the system. Electronic learning is not a new concept, and there are a lot of available resources on the internet that discuss its nature, use and many benefits. E-learning solutions combine traditional learning and teaching methods with technology and internet. Thus, traditional institutions opting for the implementation of e-learning to keep pace with the developing world must work out all the possible difficulties the students may encounter and find possible solutions. They might even approach those institutions already providing e-learning facilities for guidelines and possible solutions for the issues that usually arise.

The numerous benefits that e-learning provides will surely motivate many people to move towards it but it is equally true that despite all the advantages, e-learning cannot replace a human instructor. Therefore a clear concept of what is awaiting those who wish to go for it and whether it is appropriate to a particular individual is also crucial.

  20. @ Deegumber G.S

I apologize, but I do think that you have misunderstood what I meant. I have mentioned that it is too early to use e-Learning to its full extent not that we are not or should not be using e-Learning in any ways. Jumping over to another point that I have read in another blog, watching the news on TV is a sort of e-Learning. Hence, how could I more agree with you when you mention that we are using it but I must mention that we are not fully exploiting its full capacity.

One of the very first e-Learning tools that I have heard of is www.mathsonline.com. It is an Australian site (free for the time being) that the Maths teachers in Australia had put forward with the help of McDonalds. This website has lectures and tutorials of every maths lessons in the Australian mathematics curriculum. The students can play, pause, rewind the lectures as many times as they want, hence, it is like having a free teacher online all the time. Furthermore, parents can also have reports on how their children are doing. How wonderful is this concept.

However, if you ask me if we can do that here in Mauritius, I am sad to say that we cannot. The reason is that we do not have the resources to start with and also, a vast proportion of our people does not even have regular access to internet.

To conclude I will simply say that I am one who really believes in the e-Learning teachings. However, I have to be realistic yet optimistic in its future in Mauritius.

  21. As Deegumber G.S said e-learning issues are global as distance learning is becoming popular even in developing countries. I believe online learning is also part of self learning. However, someone learning online might not be concentrating fully, that is the way he would in a classroom, as there are numerous distractions like facebook, YouTube, msn,…, on the net. And the student-teacher interactions might be a better way to answer a students queries rather than finding solutions online without any tutor personal contact with the supervisor.

  22. Indeed, I totally agree with what our friend Deegumber G.S has said about E-Learning. The VCILT, in all its ways, is fulfilling what E-Learning means. The way we have to follow the course session after session and do the work assigned to us is interesting as we have to keep in touch with the module to be able to understand what is going.

  23. E-learning is defined as 'all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching". I agree that it is a controversial issue.Coming to this article,e-learning is different from the traditional education according to its adavantages and drawbacks. Online courses imply students can study at any time and location and can obtain the learning material very quickly. Moreover, learning material are accessible to a wider audience. However,it is true that with e-learning there is no interaction and feedback between learners and teachers and it won't have the same impact as compared when the teacher is face to face with the students. But learners can share their ideas with their friends on blogs. So,i believe that with time and proper design, e-learning can prove to be a highly effective teaching tool.

  24. @ michael :
you pointed out very good arguments. All advances in technology (e.g mobile) have both their benefits and drawbacks but they are still being used massively by many people. So you are right, let's be optimistic about e-learning also and adopt it as another teaching tool. But i do not agree when you said its to early to use it to its full extent because e-learning has evolved since computers were first used in education.

  25. e-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. e-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts. The vast movement towards e-learning is clearly motivated by the many benefits it offers. However much e-learning is praised and innovated, computers will never completely eliminate human instructors and other forms of educational delivery. What is important is to know exactly what e-learning advantages exist and when these outweigh the limitations of the medium.

    Benefits of e-learning:
    Real-time access
    Improved retention
    Personalized learning
    Ongoing access to resources
    Knowledge management
    Encourage sharing

Although e-Learning has many benefits for students and organizations alike, it also has limitations. Some students may feel isolated and unsupported while learning. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without assistance. 26. I personally will not be able to cope with the e-learning teaching because I need tangible materials like book, pens and so on to be able to work effectively. I am pleased to find that eventhough some of you are comfortable with this learning concept, find that I might not suit to all students and you realise that this is not a fair to favor those are able to manage with it.

Just imagine a class of theatre via the e-learning concept or even a class of communication... It does not have a sense...

We must thus think twice before implementing this learning concept massively.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Many institutions are now incorporating e-learning as it offers many advantages.

Personally, I find e-learning as a suitable method of teaching because, firstly, I can study conveniently at any time or anywhere in the world and at my own pace. Also, the time that I would have spent in travelling to and from the institution is saved and I can spend this time productively on the VCILT. However, one issue that we must not neglect is that even if we live in an “Information and Technology world”, some students still cannot afford a computer or an internet connection.
I would also add that before embracing e-learning, we should ponder on many issues such as the subject to be taught.

    ReplyDelete
  28. E-learning is an excellent option in education. Convenience is one of the major advantages of e-learning. It allows students to work and learn at their own pace without the unyielding time restrictions of traditional learning. Because e-learning provides access to learning materials at any time, students have the flexibility to schedule around families, jobs and other activities. Another major benefit of e-learning is the accessibility it provides. Students can learn from anywhere in the world.
A major disadvantage to e-learning is the self-discipline it requires. Another disadvantage to e-learning is the technology involved. Some people do not have ready access to a computer and internet connection.

  29. Actually, I had approximately the same opinion when I first heard about e-learning: I thought that it would be much boring and there would be a lack of interaction. But then when I enrolled for this module, I found that I had a bad impression on e-learning. Actually, interaction is encouraged, just like you said we can share our opinions and are also able to have a look on our friends’ ideas.

  31. The emergence of technology has enabled a lot of advantageous development in the field of education. One such advancement is e-learning.

Indeed e-learning has had a significant impact on the way education was previously delivered.Nowadays through the use of intranets/extranets and internet one may study right from home. Moreover e-learning reaches across terrestial frontiers and is delivered to the whole globe. This brings a degree of standardisation in the way lessons are taught since students from the whole world are able to follow the same course the same way.

However just like this article pointed out, e-learning needs appropriate solutions to its flaws to make it as effective as possible. These solutions, I reckon, should be provided only after the flaws have been properly recognised.

Yet, to make e-learning work better, it would be most desirable if the main parties concerned(tutors and students using e-learning platforms) were solicited and pointed out what would be most suitable for them. After all though e-learning is available to all, only a segment of those involved in education use it.That should make a survey of those much more cost effective.

    ReplyDelete
  32. According to WIKIPEDIA, E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. The Information and communication systems, whether networked or not, serve as specific media to implement the learning process. I believe that e-learning is a tool which is use for the transfer of knowledge and skills in nowadays advances in technology. According to me e-learning can boost learning and help the learner acquire a certain sets of learning goals just like the stand-alone modules do. E-learning is very helpful as the students can get access to their courses at anytime and anywhere and moreover the student can learn at their own pace. However e-learning do have some drawbacks which cannot be ignored.
First of all I will take the impact of the presence of a tutor.
Since the pre-primary school till the secondary school all students in Mauritius have been and are still studying with the presence of a teacher in the classroom. The physical presence of the teacher in the classroom is important as there is constant interaction between both the students and the teacher. It kind of support the students physically and as well as mentally. It is just like having a doctor examining you either face to face or via skype. You will feel more reassured by having a face to face appointment rather than having an online one. So I believe that the physical presence of a tutor is very important.
Moreover the students have to be constantly updating themselves with their online assignments which have deadline to return and it also eliminate the peer to peer interaction.

  33. E-learning is a new way of learning.
It uses a variety of media like audio, text, virtual environments, video, and animation.
e-Learning, in some ways, is even better than classroom learning methods as it is a one-on-one learning method, it is self-paced and it has an experiential-learning format.
Successfully completing online or computer-based courses builds self-knowledge and self-confidence and encourages students to take responsibility for their learning.
Self-paced learning modules allow learners to work at their own pace.

e-learning offers a variety of facilities for the learner:
-They can study wherever they want.
-Learners may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level of knowledge and interest.
-Flexibility to join discussions in the bulletin board threaded discussion areas at any hour, or visit with classmates and instructors remotely in chat rooms.
-Reduces travel cost and time to and from schools or universities.

However e-learning requires internet connection which is not affordable for all persons.
Also some connections are slow and this may cause frustrations to the learner.
Instructors may not always be available on demand.
There is a lot of difference while learning by yourself and learning through a teacher.
A teacher motivates his students. Whenever you get problems you can just ask your teacher for help.
There are some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate.

Nothing is perfect in this world and so is e-learning. Although the benefits it provides, there r also some defects in it. However it will keep improving.

  35. Hi Anonyme
Well it really is true that this world is really busy. It is also true that self study is important and e-learning assists in helping one to work at his/her own pace. Yet e-learning does have flaws that traditional learning overcomes. For instance, you said that one should not be dependent on the lecturer.I agree with that but I think that teacher's physical presence is very important in learning. There is a degree of personal touch which is encouraging when the tutor is delivering his lecture in front of the class. This is absent in e-learning and though video conferencing may be an option, it would always lack personal contact which is important in social interaction(note that education is a social interaction)

But now I’ve come to conclude that e-learning is not just about searching some pieces of information on the internet but instead it is a powerful tool used by both teacher and learner to facilitate his/her own learning process.
During online teaching, self learning takes place whereby we develop a sense of responsibility and independence that is we take the initiative and responsibility for what occurs. Moreover it provides us with the opportunity to share our views and opinions with others and get to know their views also, thus helping improve our communication skills.
In this fast evoluating world, everyone is busy and at the same time they want to acquire education to be able to fit in this society but this is quite difficult when you think of the time factor. 40. E-Learning is the process of communicating formal learning and training activities through the use of all electronic media such as Internet, CD-ROM, video tape, computer technology, etc. Since the introduction of e-learning, lives of nearly every people have become easier as it involved studying anywhere and when you want. A big example of showing the success of e-learning is that most people are doing their studies abroad via the internet and they are mostly working people. So e-learning facilitate them as they can access to their activities even during the night, they will not need a tutor sitting with them but if they do have problem there exist some forum which has been created for that. E-learning is a new way of education and bring along benefits and drawbacks listed below.

    Benefits of e-learning:
Convenience and Portability: Online learning does not require physical attendance, read materials online or download them for reading later, you can connect to your e-learning site at any time (courses are available 24/7) and at hand (study at home, work, or on the road).
Flexibility: Skip over material you already know and focus on topics you'd like to learn. Use the tools best suited to your learning styles.
Improved collaboration and interactivity among students.

    Drawbacks of e-learning:
Access: learners need to have access to a computer as well as the Internet. They also need to have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail. Without these skills and software it is not possible for the learner to succeed in e-Learning.
Isolation: students may feel isolated and unsupported sometimes while learning. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without assistance. E-Learners may also become bored with no interaction.

I think all you have said about e-learning is very good. But what about the disadvantages of applying e-learning. Some drawbacks below show that e-learning is not that easy as showing in the benefits…
 Unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind
 Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction
 Instructor may not always be available on demand
 Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating
 Some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate.
I think that in the future we should think about solutions to avoid these problems, for e.g. having a video conferencing once in a week with the entire student to solve isolation and can see other people who are doing this module

  43. E-learning is learning that takes place in an electronically simulated environment. E-learning is the next generation instruction methods being developed today. With e-learning, users can immerse themselves in a 3 dimensional environment to further enhance their learning experience. Moreover, e-learning can be done anywhere and anytime as long as the user has proper hardware. E-learning can be done using an intranet connection, a network or a storage disk. It uses a variety of media like audio, text, virtual environments, video and animation. E- Learning in some ways is even better than classroom learning methods as it is one-on-one learning method, it is self paced and it has an experiential learning format. As with any other forms of learning, e-learning depends on its delivery method and content to ensure it success. For this reason, e-learning modules have to be interesting, interactive and informative in order to be effective

Underestimating this new approach could problematic for many people and as such I think that techniques should be devised to address this topic to the public in a sensible manner.

I wondered what this course could be about and I was also reluctant to choose it as GEM. But now I have no regrets at all, as I gradually understand the importance of technology in the field of Education; and how it improves its quality. We should follow the pace of the fast changing world in order to attract students from other countries as well by offering a first class education. This could be a new form of revenue for our country. I do think that for those who want to become teachers later, this course will be of really great help for them; in the conception of new interesting programs for the benefit of the class. Thus, both the future teachers and their future pupils will have fewer risks to get bored.

  47. Nowadays, with the evolution in the world of technology, people are thinking that e-learning so simple; it’s just about providing a learning platform whereby students can enrolled themselves and certain information are given. But it’s not the case; there are certain important aspects that should be considered such as the daily issues that are involved and certain pedagogical aspects. This behavior is observed in both developed countries and developing countries.
E-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. E-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Technology has revolutionised learning. In the 21st century, people feel the need to learn more than ever before. Live classroom-based learning is becoming too costly and cumbersome. E-learning has brought a new way of teaching and learning. In fact, e-learning has brought several advantages like anyone can study anything, anywhere and at anytime, students can study and work at the same time, travel time and costs are saved, instructors can update course materials across the entire network instantly, there is higher retention of content through personalised learning, there is improved collaboration and interactivity between students, greater discussion and knowledge sharing and most importantly e-leaning is less intimidating than instructor-led courses. Students going for e-learning can enter a risk-free environment in which they try new things and make mistakes without exposing themselves. Students would then dare to ask questions, something they would have probably not done in a class full of students. Also, after a failure, students can go back and try again. Students would learn at their own pace and embarrassment of failure in front of a group is eliminated. Also, tutors feel more at ease when answering questions via the net. They have time to reflect and find the most appropriate answer. And in case they have no idea about what has been asked to them they can themselves query on the net. Hence, I think that in a way, both the students and the tutors are learning at the same time. Teachers may feel more comfortable delivering courses online rather than explaining live to a class full of students.

However, e-learning also brings disadvantages. Computer illiterates do not know how to manipulate a computer hence following an online course becomes difficult. Those having limited access to the internet or those who do not have a computer are at a disadvantage. Students feel isolated from teachers and classmates. After some time, they start getting bored. The motivation level is then on a decline. Without the routine structures of traditional classes students may get lost and confused about course activities and submission deadlines. The tutor may not always be present on demand. Even for teachers it is difficult since they have to upload course contents regularly and update their notes and softwares. Also, creating the course content takes time. Hands-on or lab work is difficult to simulate in a virtual classroom.

With the advances in technology, one must mostly opt for self-learning since everything is available on the net. E-learning is widespread nowadays. Almost all countries make use of it. We get to work with people we merely know and share our opinions thus broadening our thoughts.

At first, I did not think that in order to have a successful e-learning all these issues had to be addressed. I think that if we all adopt a positive attitude, e-learning will slowly become the most common, convenient and easy mode of learning.

  49. To Madhunisha Gunnoo:

Hey Madhunisha! Concerning your ideas about e-learning I wanted to say that it is true that e-learning is a flexible and convenient way of learning. But I feel that it is also a convenient way of teaching. Tutors can more easily respond to the queries of the students, something which may perhaps be rather difficult in a classroom during lecture time because of the time constraint. With e-learning the tutor has time to reflect about questions asked and then give an appropriate answer. Regarding the disadvantages that you listed I would like to say that I agree when you say that students end up feeling isolated because e-learning limits human interaction. Students tend to socialise less and less since they do not get to go out that often. In the beginning, it may be nice to study at home because of the various advantages of e-learning but after some time students start getting bored. In this way the motivation level starts going down and down.

  52. Introducing e-learning in academic institutions is a good initiative but it also has its drawbacks. Introducing e-learning may be good or bad depending in which countries this way of learning is applied. For example in under-developed and some developing countries, this techinque of learning may be a problem for many students because they cannot afford to by a computer and to pay a monthly internet fees. E-learning is very advantageous in well-developed countried since class work can be scheduled around work and family and reduces travel time and travel costs for off-campus students. Moreover Students may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level of knowledge and interest and students can study anywhere they have access to a computer and Internet connection. However in the case of developind countries slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials frustrating and learners with low motivation or bad study habits may fall behind. Without the routine structures of a traditional class, students may get lost or confused about course activities and deadlines since they are not acustomed to this system of learning.

  53. The vast movement towards e-learning shows clearly that it offers many benefits. However even if e-learning is praised, computers will never completely eliminate human instructors and other forms of educational delivery.

Personally, I believed that e-learning cannot remplace a teacher face to face explanations with the students. All collaborative learning theory contends that human interaction is a vital ingredient to learning despite the existence of technology like message boards, chats, e-mail, and tele-conferencing.

On the other hand, e-learning offers advantages to the learners specially for slow leaners who can work at their own pace. It gives students a chance to speed up or slow down as necessary.
The 24/7 accessibility is indeed a great positive point and physical attendance is not required. E-learning enchances computer and internet skills.

I believe that E-learning has numerous advantages and as every technology it has its drawbacks. As students of the modern world we have no other choice than to follow the trend.

  56. E learning does not restrain itself only to the use of some particular software online but transcends this concept. E learning should be tackled in a very intelligent way in the sense that planning and updating technologies should be inherent. Researchers have revealed that the concerns for E learning in so many countries are of the same wavelength. It is high time to act on these issues and find strategies to solve these problems.

  57. I totally agree with Michael that it’s too early for e-learning to be used to its full-extent because e-learning has not yet caught the attention of enough people. It is not so popular throughout the world. There are still certain countries where e-learning has not even been introduced; still printed material is being used. Once it is propagated throughout, then it should be used to its full-extent. Like this, everyone will have equal opportunity to learn about these new things at the same time.
E-learning is a very a good means of teaching and learning but to some extent. It has its own disadvantages like other means of teaching. For some people, computer-based learning is very good but for some, it’s not their cup of tea.

-Flexibility to join discussions in the bulletin board threaded discussion areas at any hour, or visit with classmates and instructors remotely in chat rooms.

However e-learning requires internet connection which is not affordable for all persons.
Also some connections are slow and this may cause frustrations to the learner.

With the advert of e-learning methodologies and technologies many educational institutions are emerging in the world market with a business concept. from my point of view a successful E-learning system involves a good control and frequent evaluation of elearners. there must be a systhematic development, planning and implementation process to create an online environment where learning becomes passionate and actively encourage. E-learning should not be meaningful and useful to an elearner but also for his surrounding environment .it is obvious that teaching online is very different from self learning . when we have accessed to self learning we can develop self-paced,independent and invidualised learning. in other words, self learning places the responsibility for learning directly on the learner. in mauritius the use of E-learning is weak in the sense that we have less and less contact with the tutours through for example SKYPE and MSN.We tend as an elearner to neglect our work due to a lack of pressure. as we have no direct contact with people , we have no idea about traditions and cultures of other E-learners.

  63. Hello Michael,
well I do not agree with what you said, I quote:"I do believe that it is too early for e-Learning to be used at its full extent."First of all,we are living in the 21st century which is a world where technology is being used extensively,so we can't say that it is too early to use e-learning .Many students are making use of e-learning to get a degree via distance learning. It is a very successful way of getting a degree. Also,if we ourselves are using e-learning for this supergem,I think it is high time for people to make use of this technology from now itself as the VCILT is also using the same method.

@michael: after having read your article , i am of the view that even though we are currently living under an era of rapid technological advances, yet implementing E-learning at it full extent as an alone teaching method is too early as there might be too many obstacles. Mauritius, being a small island, continues to lag behind in turn of technology. for example the internet connectivity is very slow compared to other countries of the world. some experienced teachers might not be accustomed with computer-based learning.they might have problems dealing with software like excel , word and powerpoint. drawings accurate graph and effective presentation might be difficult for them. it should also be noted that not everyone can have the chance to possess a laptop or any technological advances.

    Hello Annesophie,
I must agree to what you have said and i must mention that e-learning is becoming more than a mental programming in our society, that is, a form of a new culture surfacing up.Clearly, it is a motivating and interesting way of learning by ourselves on a platform based on activities. But the question is:"Is everyone the same type of learners?:slow;fast;visual;auditory;kinesthetic?
Basically, we need the contact of the educator
to tread in the right path set by them in the platform. Another intriguing question is that:"Do we really grasp all the information and researches set by the tutors and others in the platform?

E-learning can be a way to learn more but not the only and absolute path to be followed as it cannot replaced our traditional books for the various reasons highlighted by the other friends.

To sum up, for e-learning to be more effective as a solution planning is of prime importance, in terms of, woks and activities, and time(selection of relevant information to avoid confusion)

  68. Hi vidya and Michael
I totally agree with you that e-learning alone as a teaching method would not be totally efficient and it would be to the detriment of many. For example those who do not like sitting in front of a pc for long . Those who need teachers interventions (face to face interactions) in order to understand etc…

    ReplyDelete
  69. E-learning is a new way of learning, using technology.
The traditional way of learning, that is face to face learning is gradually evolving with time.
Courses are now provided on audio, tapes or on the internet. We can say that it is an efficient way of learning as we are not forced to go into a class and follow the lecturer at a particular time. If ever we could not attend the class we miss important notes and it becomes difficult to get the notes and explanations. The E-learning is an efficient way as we can get access to our courses anywhere and anytime. Students are more at ease to express themselves. This method of self study helps us to be independent and work on our own pace. Students do not depend on teacher
E-Learning modules can be easily revised. Activities can be easily added and incorporated. The e-Learning software can also be automatically updated by connecting to the server. This is definitely a lot faster than retraining professors and reprinting books and manuals.
However, although its benefits E-learning has limitations also! There are computer literacy and some are not!! Not everyone has access to the technology equipments.
Moreover, there are some topics that are not appropriate for e-learning.
Successful preparation for online learning is not significantly different from classroom preparation. Functions of the online learning environment are of poor course design, lack of instructor familiarity of the environment, and learner preparation.
In an era of ‘’lifelong learning’’, skills for acquiring knowledge play a greater role in success than do knowledge concepts.

  71. E-learning is a new way of learning indeed it is also a very effective way of learning. From my actual personal experience it helps me to work at my own pace within desired conditions at home. Moreover like no other training form, e-learning promises to provide a single experience that accommodates the three distinct learning styles of auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic learners.

Now through this module I can understand more the importance of technology in the field of education and how it improves its quality. During online teaching, self learning takes place whereby one develops a sense of responsibility and independence. Moreover it provides us with the opportunity to share our views and opinions with others without any fear and in a more interesting way.

But I am also of the opinion that E -learning will never eliminate the need for printed workbooks or reference material and human interaction which are essential for the human development and education. So therefore I maintain that I go for a blended learning program that combines e-learning and traditional learning methods.

In this era of high technology, people being more sensitive to different electronic systems has implied further development in the field of eLearning. But do people really have an appropriate image of it and know of what importance eLearning is actually??
ELearning is indeed not so simple and easy as one would perceive it to be at first glance .Though it is less costly and time consuming when compared to traditional classroom settings, it needs hard work and punctuality so as to bear the desired result.
For instance, in this module we have to submit a work at the end of each week, we discuss with friends, acquire their views, and share our views on the comments of our peers. This prevents the monotony if we would have had to learn these in class in form of lecture notes and promotes practical and constructive thinking.
However we cannot say that eLearning is perfect. It all depends on how it is being exploited and to teach which material it is being used. As a final point I would say eLearning has its ups and downs, but in all actuality, it can be considered as the best way to get any education. So we should not let the disadvantages discourage us because they can be overcome!

I do share the same idea with you that via eLeaning we are free to express our ideas without being hesitant to lecturers which is the case of many students. In the majority of cases students do not ask questions in class with fear of being embarrassed in front of their peers and they prefer remaining doubtful. But Over here every single doubt can be cleared via emails and so on.
But any new technology is bound to bring along certain discomfort, one needs to get accustomed to it and to be responsible enough in their work in order to reap its benefits to the finest.

  74. I do accept that E-learning, maybe somewhat boring and ineffective. Even the most sophisticated device would never replace the presence of a human being. Not all learners have the same learning pace. Some of them assimilate quickly while others experience lot of difficulties. The teacher will use varied method of teaching and create different learning experiences to meet the needs of the learners and satisfy their learning style. Therefore the presence of a teacher is fundamental to deliver effective learning. I have a module Managerial Communication which helps to develop the communication skill, but with E-learning this will be impossible. But in certain specific cases E-learning can be used. For example someone who is willing to study Actuarial Science and who has not sufficient money to finance his studies abroad, because in the universities in Mauritius do not offer this course. In this specific case E-learning can be understood.

  75. “E-learning”, this word raises several questions in the mind, like ‘what is it? Will I be able to get used to this new technology?’ It is simply learning conducted via electronic media, especially the internet. I agree with this issue. E-learning is a new and easy way of learning and interacting with tutors and friend. We are free to study when we want as well as where we want and it is, of course, not boring to learn in this way.

  76. @ Pauline – I completely agree with what you said. A blended learning program that combines e-learning and traditional learning methods is more beneficial. As this duty of a tutor cannot be totally replaced by educational technology.

  77. The growth of E- Learning is related to the increasing access to information and technology. It is not merely to download and install the learning platform. It requires important planning. There is a need to invest in technology infrastructure and to keep into account the new technological advances. Otherwise, e-learning will be an unpleasant experience for both students and teachers. Proper training should be given to teachers, especially to those new teachers to enable them to make the most of the technology.

  78. E-LEARNING INSIGHTS

E-Learning has no doubt gained considerable growth since recent years, and has proved to be effective. However, it does have several anomalies.

In fact, e-learning has proved to be beneficial in reducing cost, saving time of individuals. For instance, working people who are doing part-time studies at the same time will be more willing to opt for e-learning instead of attending lectures. This will be beneficial to the company also, since the employees will not be leaving work earlier than usual to attend courses, and this in turn offers Economies of Scale to the company.

Consequently, it should also be noted that many drop out from distance learning. Some thrive on the social interaction like peer pressure, competition spirits or cooperation. Also, these drop-outs may be due to the difficulty associated in maintaining motivation, or learners lose interests and feel either lost or isolated that they stop working on the material.

I firmly believe that both face-to-face experiences and Network-Based education will have a proper balance in our study. For example, consider the “Associate of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA).” a course being known world-wide which provides e-learning facilities on various aspects. Despite this, in Mauritius, courses are still practiced in the traditional way which proves to be really helpful. The ACCA also provides the facility to sit for exams of some papers either paper based or computer based. In my case, I would have preferred the former one while others may prefer the computer based one.

In short, it all depends on each and every individual’s perspective as to what they are much familiar with as there are several types of learners namely slow or rapid, motivated and so forth.

  79. Personally I do not agree that the problem encounters by e learners are the same for developed and developing countries. In developing countries, e learners will face problems such as easy access to a computer as well as the Internet. They also need to have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail. Without these skills and software it is not possible for the learner to succeed in eLearning. So to be fair, the problems and issues related to eLearning are more alarming in developed countries.

E-learning is also known as electronic learning. It covers a wide set of applications and processors such as web-based learning, computer based learning. It acts as an effective tool for managing developments pathways and goals, even handling e-commerce and financial transactions related to learning. It also helps in supporting informal learning and mentoring. In other words, e-learning does most everything in the corporate world related to learning except for training.

In this fast growing century, more and more people are studying. Thus, there is not enough space to teach all, and in this case the online technique proves to be better. However, many people drop out from this type of learning, that is, they quit the program because the learning package is not adequately interactive and not that user-friendly as well. So, in order to reduce the drop-outs rate, the right skills and knowledge should be used, thus, utilizing the resources efficiently and wisely.

In short, we can say that e-learning can provide a more self-directed learning experience and more flexibility as compared to the traditional way, where trainers make more effective use of their time.

  82. Hi Vidya,

Well even I shared the same opinion before and I agree to whatever you mentioned about distance learning. This new means of learning have really proved to be efficient and effective.

However, if viewed from another angle we cannot really agree to the fact that it is easy for each and everyone to be at ease with this type of education. We should consider the slow learners case where these people need more explanation on a topic to be able to understand as compared to rapid learners, who normally can understand by themselves. Additionally, many people who have joined the working field many years ago are not computer literate. Now, if they are studying further, due to the changes occurring in this era it will be really difficult for them to use this completely new type of learning. They will not find it user- friendly and may be discouraged to continue working on the materials.

  84. E-learning as the name implies does have its place within this new era where technology has developed a lot. As any other form of learning it does have some pros and cons.
It can be pointed out that E-learning gives us the opportunity to study at our rhythm. It develops our computer skills as we have to navigate through various activities provided.

However it cannot be denied that human face to face interaction is not to be neglected. Even though students can get to know themselves on blogs and forum provided on the E- learning, it is always beneficial and pleasant to get to know friends through face to face meetings. In some cases, students may find it more suitable to have classes and printed-based manuals as learning resources rather than to look at their screens.

To end I will say that E-learning is a constructive manner of Teaching and learning, it gives chance to students to manage their time effectively and enable them to consult the platform at any time.

E-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere.
If one could stop time and inexpensively bring together all the people who need to learn and the resources to teach them, E-Learning would not be required. But in the real world, people have jobs to do and budgets are limited. Thus our learning program will need the power of technology-through e-learning- to overcome the limitations of time, distance and resources.

Now, successful e-learning is based on practical, in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of the subject area as well as suitable models and technology. The institutions should therefore cater for these factors to be successful in e learning. This may include initial training to become familiar with the e-learning platform and the people involved with the course.

E-learning is mostly associated with activities involving computers and interactive networks simultaneously. The computer does not need to be the central element of the activity or provide learning content. However, the computer and the network must hold a significant involvement in the learning activity.
Distance learning involves interaction at a distance between instructor and learners, and enables timely instructor reaction to learners. Simply posting or broadcasting learning materials to learners is not distance learning. Instructors must be involved in receiving feedback from learners.

Distance learning is an old concept. It involves interaction between class members primarily at a distance, and enables the instructor to interact with learners. Distance learning is typically associated with televised broadcasts and correspondence courses, but it also applies to certain e-learning applications. On the Internet, educational interaction primarily at a distance is required between instructor and students, or between students. With the advanced technology, typical distance learning includes Internet-based live instructor broadcasts, video-conferencing, chat and scheduled online conference discussions, and the like.

E- Learning has its advantages in this new era but technology can never replace the human element. The role of an instructor is changed from “sage on the stage” to guide on the side”, but not removed.

  87. Hello Jean-Damien,
I also have the opinion that modern ways of teaching and learning have to be combined with some effective traditional ways of teaching and learning to come up with the best teaching method. However, many methods have to be tried first, so that we know which ones are efficient and which ones are not. I am confident that in the coming years, a balance will be found. The trial and error method is on-going.

  88. E-learning is well integrated in our contemporary world and a vivid example is this module in itself. Benefits surely thrive as it may reduce travel cost and time to and from school, learners may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level of knowledge and interest, develop computing and internet skills which would surely help in any facets of a learner’s life and may even build self confidence which would encourage students to take responsibility for their learning. But E-learning is not the cure to all problems, as with this system students may feel isolated or miss social interaction, instructor may not be always available on demand and where unmotivated students with poor study habits may fall behind. E-learning, regardless of being an essential tool in our technological world, has to my point of view, not be considered as the sole factor through which all problems related to learning would be solved as traditional learning has proved its mettle as well, for being pure products of that system ourselves guys!

    ReplyDelete
  89. @ jean.thuposy1 I agree with you mate. E-learning is not the cure to all problems related to learning. Students have different learning styles for sure, but what about the others who can't really manage to cope with such and such subjects - where the presence of a tutor would surely be of paramount importance in such cases. As a times, the student may just need a little boost to work and i doubt that an e-learning platform shall provide this. It is true that we are in the 21st century, but till yet there are homes where there are no computers. What about those students then? e-Learning is innovative and interesting but should work in parallel with the traditional way of learning. As a follow up, EDUCATION as a whole shall be the winner of all this...

Just as mentioned in the blog, that we just have to install the learning platform, add some contents and enroll the students, is not as simple as that. It can be simple to the viewpoint of an IT graduate, but according to a student, it might not be so easy. E-learning does not involve the traditional method of learning, where we attend classes. The learners can study wherever and whenever they have access to a computer and internet facilities. This is an advantage but to some extent it can cause some problems to those students who are unmotivated and have poor study habits, thus, making them lag behind. Students can work at their own pace, they can join any conversations and give their point of view, and they can perform their home works whenever they want, provided that they respect the deadline. These can be advantageous to some extent, but I think that this method of learning cannot assess the capabilities of a student. The students may feel isolated some time and this can reduce their potential to work. E-learning also creates a barrier in familial life. It has been reported that some students get so involve in their work online that they tend not to socialize.
It also becomes a nuisance as stated by the vice chancellor of the University Of Mauritius, that the students incur great problems to do their final project alone because the instructor or tutor may not always be available on demand. I would prefer the traditional mode of learning, whereby the teacher is in front of me, delivering the lecture, rather than this sophisticated pedagogy. But not to forget also, E-learning has showed a positive impact on many students, by rendering them more responsible and independent concerning their learning approach. I hereby think that E-learning has both its advantages and disadvantages.

  95. “E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching.”
From this definition I tried to figure out how can we learn things electronically. With no hard copies of lectures, no concrete explanation, no pen, nothing. Just sitting behind a computer can really help us to learn this course? Then I realized that indeed yes! We can learn from this new technology. This creates into us the endeavor to have a critical thinking and understand things on our own. Also there is no need for us to sit for hours in a class trying to figure out what is being explained.
From this new leaning technique, we see that we can access to our lectures whenever and wherever we want.
Though this technology has some drawbacks, I personally think that it is a huge step towards a better a more sophisticated learning platform.

  96. E-learning is not just about being able to access the Web and blindly create a learning forum. There are several implications behind the proper running of an e-learning platform: the responsibilities of the academic in charge, the right amount of preparation, the consequences of using new teaching techniques, the drawbacks of implementing e-learning in a wrong environment.
The problems facing e-learning do not vary from place to place. Hence, everyone is cognisant of them. But, we need solutions that are carefully experimented and statistically beneficial in order to resolve all issues.

  97. There is not even the shadow of a doubt that the success of e-learning in an institution can be a very hard nut to crack. As outlined by the article, major consideration must be given about how e-learning can be beneficial or be a serious problem affecting students in learning. Besides it is an undeniable proof that, e-learning bring out creativity, make students think critically, be self independent enables them to manage their time properly, and encourages them to participate but it should not be ignored that e-learning may as well act as a hindrance since students might require some guidance and moral support especially to know whether they are on the right track.
However if we analyze the issue objectively, with simple logical reasoning, the following questions would dawn upon us:
To what extent e-learning is an efficient choice for learning?
    Can everybody afford it?
Or what makes e-learning a suitable and recommendable concept rather than the traditional distance education concept?
It is indeed a highly debatable issue. Nonetheless viewed from a different perspective, it is an undeniable fact that it is a good initiative on behalf of the author to identify the aspects and criteria of what makes e-learning affordable, effective, interesting & fun and not just aim for further enrollments of students for e-learning

e-learning has its advantages and flaws like all other teaching/learning methods. A few advantages of e-learning would be that firstly no lectures are conducted since everything is done online; in the case of the University of Mauritius that's really a huge advantage when you consider the number of students enrolled and the limited amount of lecture theaters and classrooms available. With e-learning, like the Educational Technologies Program, students are staying and working directly from home. Some of us probably have laptops and are lying on bed BUT still doing their work! Also e-learning compels students to be more responsible. In what way? Well if we don't submit the work on time we will be penalized and won't get the marks. No lecturer is going to remind you each week that you have to do your work. Spoon feeding is over with e-learning! Moreover students work at their pace meaning that if a student feels he has more time today he can complete more activities in advance.
However on the other hand, e-learning does have disadvantages. The tutor cannot be sure that the thousands students following the course online have understood the work. Also there is no face-to-face interaction between students and lecturer as they do not meet.

In reference to Annesophie’s comment, I would just like to say that I agree with her point of view; it is true to say that not all students are comfortable with the idea of e-learning as they are used to the traditional way of learning that is going to class and learning from books and taking down notes. We cannot implement e-learning if it suits only a portion of students and even educators/facilitators. We have been exposed to the traditional learning techniques since years and such s major change as e-learning will not happen so easily and rapidly.

    E learning has various advantages:
1.Flexibility to study anywhere and anytime
2.Less time is spent in travelling to universities and therefore saves cost
    3. Can work at own pace
As far as my opinion concern, Mauritius needs to innovate and there are lots of things to be done. But neglecting traditional teaching will bring an institution to disaster as a human presence for education is elemental. Therefore we need to balance our learning process with combine traditional learning and methods with technology.

  103. a Michael:

I fully support the fact that indeed e-learning is a very good tool introduced with advanced technology.
I also thought that learning at one's pace is, amongst others, one the biggest advantages for students who have busy schedules like me.
One important thing that has been pointed out is self- teaching. I would like to add that this must indeed be encouraged.
Many students would rather rely on what we call 'spoon feeding' but I think that we learn a lot more from self teaching-
not only the subject itself, but in the process we also acquire important attributes such as self- discipline and accurate research skills.
Because of certain limitations that have not yet been catered for, e-learning must be used where appropriate and
more and more students must be made aware of the many advantages that it provides.
I believe that flaws may be reduced if students are able and willing to make an effort to adapt to this 'new' educational system.

The concept of E-learning is about the use of technology to acquire knowledge and as support to learning and teaching. The practical advantage with this form of learning is that it is convenient as the students can learn at their own paces.
This method of learning is more appropriate to university students as at tertiary level, students should become more independent, doing their own research material and should develop an ‘entrepreneurship’ culture.
It is different from self learning in the sense that information are online and have to be read, there is no need of having the presence of a physical teacher. He is now only there to assist the students in the case they have problems.
It is similar to traditional distance education as in both cases there are no teacher to pass on the information, but the major difference I think is that in E-learning, as it is done in VCILT program, there is a constant monitoring and regular assessment questions that ensure the participation of the learners and that they really understand the information being transmitted.

well i agree with you to some extent. it is true that with e-learning we do not have to attend class and we can easily access our lectures just via a computer. but one thing is also true that sometimes during this process some students who have bad study habits and who are unmotivated are lagged behind. this is simple because they cannot keep pace with this new learning strategy, where some sense of responsibility is required. but it would not have been a bad idea to promote e-learning because just as you have mentioned, it somehow allows us to think critically and understand things much better, and eventually make us mature students.
    thanks.

  108. E-learning is defined as being any form of electronically supported learning and teaching., where the information and communication systems serves as specific media to implement the learning process. It is very important to consider in what way e-learning can be best used in teaching because otherwise people will not be motivated to learn. However, it cannot be denied that the use of information technology has become an integral part in aiding students to learn. E-learning is an excellent option to people who wish to continue their studies but who live far from an educational institution, at different times of the day and night. Self-paced learning modules allow students to work at their own pace However, E-learning requires self-discipline. The learner should know how much time he is spending on a particular work. Also, there is a lack of interaction between student and teacher. Some students find it easier to understand when a person is explaining something, rather than a computer. Moreover, some people even in developing or developed countries do not have access to a computer and internet connection. VCILT is an active institution in Mauritius that promotes e-learning. It should be taken into consideration that the teacher has to know his or her subject as well as the use of computer tools. Therefore, the work load of the teacher increases. Also, the teacher should be available for queries asked by students at any time of the day. Therefore, the teacher has to devote himself more for e-learning courses to run efficiently in Mauritius. However, it cannot be denied that through e-learning students learn much. for example, in the Educational Technologies course, which is an online-based module, students put into practice what they have learned in theory by creating their own websites.

I agree with what you have said. it is true that for an IT graduate it might be easy to study through e-learning. However, a student might find it to be a difficult means of studying. In Mauritius, despite many of us being exposed to computer tools, there are still many of us who do not know how to manipulate several computer softwares and this can be an obstacle when studying through computers.

E-learning is not always good as unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind. Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction as they are studying alone and there is no one to instruct them on how to do their work. The percentage of failure among students undertaking e-learning courses is often high. However there should be interaction among tutors and students to discuss their problems. This can be done by the use of Skype, video calls etc. There should be proper planning of the work as the VCILT has done, every week you get your work posted online and there is also an open discussion forum where tutors, students and friends can discus and solve their problems online.

  121. E-learning platforms are extremely popular nowadays. we even use them in the university of Mauritius. for e.g the computer science and engineering department has it's own moodle where it posts its notes, tutorials and announcements. But the problem resides that students still needs advice of tutors to guide them and we cannot at all times depend the moodle as it is very often down. Moodles are an enjoying platform from where to learn on but if they are not well planned and managed and it become pointless and also moodles should never attempt to replace traditional platforms because we will still need that for a long time.

  122. Ten years back, e-learning was a completely unknown concept. It is a new way of providing knowledge and training to any one at any time in any place. Tutors can impart knowledge though they are kilometers away from their student but connected through various electronic technologies. Indeed the flexibility offered by e-learning is one of the first major advantages. Beside it allows individuals to learn at its own pace at times which best suit him without having to bear the pressure and stress present in a traditional face-to-face interaction between tutors and student.
However the cons of such a system of learning are numerous as well. At time student need a certain type of pressure which would allow him to work and to excel in the training. The student may feel cut off. Moreover a technology driven course might face technical issues such as slow internet connection or malfunctioning software very often which might interrupt the normal course of the study. These disadvantages however van be easily curbed by implementing ad adequate planning for the smooth running of this type of traning.

  123. After having read about e-Learning in this particular course; I can define e-Learning as: “the delivery of a learning, teaching or education program by electronic means”. The main advantages of e-Learning are: it reduces travel cost and time, reduce the need for printed workbook and solve the attendance problems. Also, students can study whenever and wherever they want, provided they have a computer and internet facilities. This type of learning is more appropriate at the tertiary level where students are more independent. On the other hand, e-Learning reduces social contact and there is virtually no group work.
As mentioned in the article, many questions are yet to be answered. These unanswered issues must be carefully examined and the resulting potential solutions will unarguably provide the stepping stone to another level in the e-Learning strategy.
Personally, I think that a single learning strategy may not answer all queries and expectations. However, a combination of e-Learning and traditional learning might be more convenient.

I totally agree on the points you put forward. The question "To what extent e-Learning is an efficient choice for learning" is indeed very arguable. Personally, i think that 'e-Learning' concept must not be introduce blindly in the educational field. This transition must be progressive. Students and even teachers should follow courses on how to use such tools and softwares. wrong manipulation or complicated softwares can be a huge obstacle for the efficient flow of information.

  125. E-Learning as an advanced system for learning through Information Communication Technologies is becoming an engine of innovation in education. I agree if a newly employed IT react like this, it would really be a disaster. And it's true that it never depends on your country development, as the problems related to e-learning are the same. We should not only find solutions, we should also apply to it. There are two main issues that stand out. The first one is that the course material used in e-learning sometimes is unattractive and non-compelling. Secondly, is the poverty of pedagogies for e-learning. The pedagogies refers to 'teachers' teaching the various chapter of a course via the e-learning process.

  126. -Learning

It is a form of training or teaching over the internet or intranet. That is, it takes place in an electronically simulated environment.
E learning is important as it will develop skills like the ability to learn, to adapt quickly, to communicate across a neutral medium, to analyze data, to utilize technology, an ability to conduct research, and, of course, the ability to work independently without compromising productivity.
For e learning to be a success, we must make e learning part of a broader learning frame (i.e., to be successful, e learning need to be grounded in a larger organization whereby the learning strategy need to be tied to the organizational objective). Also we need to make full use of the technology even though it means the use of existing ones.
Furthermore, to ensure its success, prior planning will be important as it will help to:
    • specify the e learning goals
    • how to align e learning to the needs of the students
    • what groups and how many learners desire to access to it
    • what are the critical success factors
    • how results will be measured
    • who will be responsible of the e learning initiative

    Advantages of e-Learning
    • Reduces travel cost and time to and from school
    • Learners may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level of knowledge and interest
    • Learners can study wherever they have access to a computer and Internet
    • Self-paced learning modules allow learners to work at their own pace
    • Flexibility to join discussions in the bulletin board threaded discussion areas at any hour, or visit with classmates and instructors remotely in chat rooms
    • Different learning styles are addressed and facilitation of learning occurs through varied activities
    • Development of computer and Internet skills that are transferable to other facets of learner's lives
    • Successfully completing online or computer-based courses builds self-knowledge and self-confidence and encourages students to take responsibility for their learning

Consequently, we must not forget the other side of the coin. For instance, unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind. Moreover, students may feel isolated or miss social interaction as there would be the student and his computer alone. Furthermore, instructor may not always be available on demand and hence this may be quite frustrating if there is an emergency. Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating

  128. A Definition of Educational Technology

Also known variously as e-learning, instructional technology and learning technology, educational technology is the use of technology to support the learning process. Although the term can refer to all kinds of analogue technologies, eg photographs, film, video, audio recordings etc, it is usually used to talk specifically about digital computer technology.

  129. E-learning is really very helpful in education, based on online teaching and educational resources sharing, this particular innovation in education has successfully achieved an unlimited heights. However, it is also noticeable that e-learning has its various silent disadvantages which may not be visible but already affecting users. Indirect communication with the tutor makes the relation between a tutor and a student seems almost virtual. Resources posted are differently perceived by each student, where in the case of face to face learning it would be same for everyone. VCILT has made these problems unquestionable providing visual and digital communication between tutors and students. This could be the main innovation of e-learning.

    ReplyDelete
  130. The enormous movement towards e-learning is undoubtedly provoked by the many benefits it offers. However much e-learning is praised and innovated, computers will never entirely eradicate human instructors. What is important is to know exactly what e-learning advantages exist and when these overshadow the limitations of the medium.
E-learning promises to provide an experience that contains the three well-defined learning styles of auditory learners and visual learners. Other unique opportunities created by the advent and development of e-learning are more efficient training of a globally detached audience; and reduced publishing and distribution costs.
E-learning also offers individualized instruction, which print media cannot provide, and instructor-led courses allow awkwardly and at great cost. In concurrence with assessing needs, e-learning can aim specific needs. And by using learning style tests, e-learning can establish and target individual learning preferences.
furthermore, synchronous e-learning is self-paced. Advanced learners are allowed to pace through or avoid instruction that is superfluous while novices slow their own progress through content, eliminating trouble with themselves, their fellow learners, and the course.
In these ways, e-learning is inclusive of a maximum number of participants with a maximum range of learning styles, preferences, and needs.

  135. “eLearning?? What’s the bid deal?” I think this is the problem, it’s no big deal. Internet has been for a too long time associated with games, fun, etc…Let us be realistic. How many among us will, without having an assignment, use internet only for studies? This, I think, will make the teachers’ task more difficult.
At some point, the difference between online teaching and self learning is asked?
Well, if I am not mistaking, self learning is when the student does some research on a particular subject he is really interested in, whereas online teaching is when a teacher is providing education online, whether the student like the subject or not. Thus, there is the factor of motivation which changes the whole case. Imagine a student who hates mathematics, has a whole document of 30 pages to read online!
In an attempt to modernize, or facilitating our task, we shall be careful so as we don’t downgrade the level of education offered.
But I'm sure, with time, eLearning will be able to prove itself in Mauritius.

E-learning is not as easy a task as it appears. With the advent of new technologies, e-learning allows the widespread of knowledge over a wide area network without verbal or eye contact. However, it can prove to be quite disadvantageous with the lack of proper management of data and careless planning on behalf of the instructor and the learner as well. E-learning has been undeniably considered as one of the latest educational technologies but still the lack of awareness on the structures and use of e-learning from the part of the learner might be a drawback.

  139. I partly agree with this article in the sense that e-learning is not an efficient way of acquiring a good education. The author asks some relevant questions concerning the importance of e-learning.According to me, e-learning is simply an additional tool for the learning process, but not a trustworthy system of getting a good education. Many e-learners are obtaining difficulties in their studies. When time comes to clarify a part of the syllabus, they are left with themselves!

  140. @ Vara: I agree with your points. When we are online 'reading' a document, we cannot get an absolute focus on the subject as it would be the case for a book. I bet that person will be already fed up in the first hour itself! And more importantly, this person's health will deteriorate. Laziness will replace motivation.

  142. E-LEARNING
“E-Learning”, just hearing the word itself would draw the attention of any learner. As any other technology, e-learning has brought many changes to our lives, both in a positive and negative way. The questions raised in the article are very wise in the sense that it allows us to analyse the subject (e-learning) in a critical manner.
E-learning definitely creates the same problem in both developed and developing countries as observed. For instance, the learner even though processing all the material facilities would still require certain skills and knowledge of programs such as word processing, internet browser, e-mail… Also, learners may suffer from side effects such as isolation and boredom (due to lack of human interaction). Sometimes they may also feel completely loss due to insufficient/complicated information especially when they are left on their own (without proper guidance).

    ReplyDelete
  143. @ Auckbarally
Ofcourse E-Learning can never completely replace traditional teaching methods as suggested by Auckbarally and approved by Varaluxmee. E-learning can enhance and solve problems faced in traditional learning. For instance additional information can be send to learners via e-mails and online student-teacher interaction for extra discussion. E-learning has certain drawbacks that can be solved via traditional learning and vice versa. What would be a better idea is a blended learning (both E-learning and Traditional learning) that would allow learners to achieve their aim.

  144. ELearning is student-centered, flexible and convenient. With the ease of online delivery, the emphasis in the educational process shifts from teaching to learning. You do not have to follow a prescribed pattern and there is more scope for learning according to your own preferred style. In the online environment, everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in class discussions. Of course, there are challenges to e-learning. Learners' need a great deal of self-discipline and will also have to upgrade their digital literacy. E-Learning can also have some disadvantages. Aside from the fact that it lacks human interaction, you must also have at least the basic knowledge in computers although you will not be required to be a computer genius in order to take up an E-Learning course.

To sum it up, E-Learning has its own pros and cons as in any type of service-oriented activities but if you will compare it cons against the benefits you can take advantage in E-Learning, it will certainly dwarf the disadvantages and E-Learning will still come as an excellent and convenient way of gaining further education which will not require anyone to spend a lot of money or time to spare just to achieve their academic pursuit.

  150. E learning help in the creation of opportunities to a globally dispersed audience; and reduced publishing and distribution costs as Web-based training becomes a standard. It also offers individualized instruction, which print media cannot provide, and instructor-led courses allow clumsily and at great cost. Indeed e learning is self-paced thus advanced learners have to speed up or bypass instructions

  151. I find eLearning very flexible as it depends on the person how, what and when to access the information that is move through presentation in a predetermined sequence. It is a dynamic process and learner controls their own interaction with the presentation in terms of time management.
The eLearning platform is becoming more and more popular nowadays and the student enrolment rate is going up. This platform is luring many students as they find it very flexible. All they need is their pc, a good internet connection and most important is time management. Learning in class and eLearning are on two extremes but both have the same aim of having a quality education for an educated population. Through distance education students are able to follow more than 1 course and obtain a foreign degree just by learning at home. This saves time and they are able to go in this competitive job market with better academical qualifications and thus with a higher probability of obtaining a job.
However it is true that we should plan the eLearning concept well before it is implemented so that it has a smooth running. VCILT has successfully implemented eLearning with the proper planning and Deegumber has rightly said giving us assignments on a weekly basis instead of giving us all the assignments at one go.

  152. I dont really agree with the point that dani mentioned that eLearning lacks 'human interaction'as what we are doing just now is what we called interaction even though it lacks physical interaction. eLearning tries to solve by requesting users to upload pictures of themselves so at least we know with whom we are sharing our views although its merely virtual.
however Dani brought some other points forward such as it has more scope for learning in our own style;and i agree with that point.

i completely agree with the concept of having both E-learning and Traditional learning, which indeed would be beneficial as one can make additional notes or try to catchup with traditional learning by e learning. elearning can help the student to interact and share views with students throughout the world as well, which proved to be of real benefit to the latter.

  154. Moodle is a free, open-source PHP web application for producing modular internet-based courses that support modern social constructionist pedagogy.
Moodle.org now has over a million registered users! (Source: Moodle Statistics.) The community site has 65 courses containing around 700,000 forum posts.
But, in regards to e-learning, is it enough? I do not think so.
According to me, structure can vary, but the learners’ needs and the learning situation should always be foremost in the minds of the training professional.
Online teaching is increasingly common at many types of higher education institutions, ranging from hybrid courses that offer a combination of in-person and online instruction, to fully online experiences and distance learning.
Based on a survey, the overall feelings towards online teaching in order of precedence are as follows:
    • Exciting
    • Challenging
    • Time consuming
    • Demanding
    • Technical issue
    • Flexibility
    • Potential
    • Better options
    • Frustrating
    • Communication
    • Fun
In my opinion, the skills and attributes of the online instructor should be:
    • Relating to the learner in the online environment
    • Managing the online learning environment
    • Communicating effectively online
    • Using online learning tools
    • Using effective online teaching methods
To the question: Why is online teaching different to self-learning? I would point out that now it is like “From Learning to Use” to “Using to Learn”. The mere presence of computers or high speed access to the Internet does not imply high use, let alone educational use.

Lastly, I will just quote a phrase for my conclusion:
"Teacher education institutions may either assume a leadership role in the transformation of education or be left behind in the swirl of rapid technological change" (UNESCO, 2002).

  155. @Annesophie. I agree with the reflection you made about a class of theater but I sincerely think we should be optimistic because I think everyone has their own "style" for collecting and organizing information into useful knowledge, and the online environment can be particularly well suited to some learning styles and personality needs. For example, introverted students often find it easier to communicate via computer-mediated communication than in face-to-face situations. Also, the online environment lends itself to a less hierarchical approach to instruction which meets the leaning needs of people who do not approach new information in a systematic or linear fashion. Online learning environments are used to their highest potential for collaborative learning which complements many students' learning styles, and independent learners have also found online courses to be well suited to their needs.
I would also like to point out that as you; I too fall in the category of tactile/kinesthetic learners, that is, those people learn best when doing a physical "hands-on" activity. In the classroom, they prefer to learn new materials in lab setting where they can touch and manipulate materials. They learn best in physically active learning situations. They benefit from instructors who use in-class demonstrations, hands-on learning experiences, and fieldwork outside the classroom.

    ReplyDelete
  156. @Annesophie. But, online environments can provide learning opportunities for tactile/kinesthetic learners. Simulations with 3-Dimensional graphics can replicate physical demonstrations. Lab sessions can be conducted either at predetermined locations or at home and then discussed online. Also, outside fieldwork can be incorporated into the coursework, with ample online discussion both preceding and following the experience. Finally, the online environment is well suited for presentation and discussion of either group or individual projects and activities.

  157. I agree with the fact that with the fast moving world, we should be more optimistic because nowadays each individuals have its own ways of learning and different ways to understand things... E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio. This facilitates the work process since it is student centered, self directed, flexible. Thus it will be the student who will benefit from it...

  158. E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. It can also be described as a platform where students do not have to be physically present in a class to be able to follow the class but can do the same thing via the Internet, where he/she is provided with support materials from a tutor to which communication will be set online via emails and chat among others. Here, the student can learn at his own pace and at his own time.
It is indeed vital to note that the blog created for the e-learning process should be well structured and created, after great research and considerations of the students need. A blog cannot be created as such, just only to say that you are promoting e-learning. Its needs, criteria and objectives should be met.
On the other hand, e-learning has its own disadvantages such as it reduces social interactions, there is less physical activity and the study can somehow become boring even though there has been good planning of the blog or other medium used to promote the e-learning activity!

  159. @ Neervana
Hello Neervana, the way you listed the characteristics, benefits and the limitations of e-learning is highly plausible.
One of the points you brought forward as benefits is “E-Learning is interactive and hands-on” which is true since the student needs to participate in the different activities proposed by the tutor which can be assessed.

However, as you discussed as limitations, it depends on the student’s willingness and sense of responsibility to participate in the different activities provided by the tutors. He/she should be able to allocate adequate times to the learning process!

Moreover, as you stated, the e-learning process, if truly planned and structured in a thoughtful manner will bring great contribution in the student’s education. The student will be attracted and motivated on having access to a properly designed tool of learning.

Nobody has the exact answer to what is the future of e-learning, but it is an important one to consider. We are in transition phase and very soon technology and education will soon become mutually interdependent. In order to enhance the knowledge base and expand opportunities for future every person will need to learn how to use technology to improve their education. The world is shrinking rapidly. With the Internet the world has come together in ways that nobody would have expected few decades ago. E-learning has become a widely accepted method of training and education within schools, colleges and organizations. We must learn how and when to use this process and facility to its best advantage.

  161. E-learning is an excellent option in education, particularly when there are obstacles to traditional learning situations. For example, some people wish to continue their educations but do not live within driving distance of a college or university and do not find it feasible to move. E-learning is a viable alternative for these students. Some choose full-time enrolment in a virtual school, while others use e-learning to supplement a home school curriculum. In the business world, e-learning provides a way for companies to train and instruct employees without requiring them to travel to a central location.Convenience is one of the major advantages of e-learning. This is an especially important consideration for students who wish to study in a different country. In addition, because e-learning can be done from home, students have less clothing and driving expenses than with traditional learning. A major disadvantage to e-learning is the self-discipline it requires. While being able to work at your own pace can be an advantage, it can also be a disadvantage. This is especially true for students who have difficulty with time management and procrastination. These students tend to be more successful with the structure of traditional learning. Another disadvantage to e-learning is the technology involved. Some people do not have ready access to a computer and Internet connection. And some who do have the required equipment feel ill-equipped to use it. Lack of interaction between teacher and student is another drawback to e-learning. Some students need the immediate feedback that interaction provides.

E-learning includes Web-based learning; computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration among others. Communication technologies used in e-learning are blogs, wikis, and discussion boards. The idea here is that participants may engage in the exchange of ideas or information without the dependency of other participant’s involvement at the same time. E-Learning advantages and disadvantages are important to consider when making instructional and learning decisions in educational purposes. The advantages are as follows:
    • Class work can be scheduled around personal and professional work
    • Reduces travel cost and time to and from school

There are day-to-day issues that an academic involved in teaching online has to deal with and these are listed below:

    • Unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind
    • Lack of familiar structure and routine may take getting used to
    • Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction
    • Instructor may not always be available on demand
    • Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating
    • Managing learning software can involve a learning curve
    • Some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate

Knowing e-learning advantages and disadvantages helps with learning software selection as well as online distance learning programs structure and selection.
To conclude, we can say that there is no single e-learning method which is best for every learning need. The most efficient way will be to use several e-learning technologies as well as traditional learning methods. A blended learning program combines e-learning and traditional learning methods. Blended learning can provide the convenience, speed and cost effectiveness of e-learning with the personal touch of traditional learning.

  170. My perspective about e-learning changed ever since i started doing this module. I totally agree that the issue on e-leaning is very crucial. E-learning technology has recently been implemented in many countries, including Mauritius. This may be the reason why the majority who use it are unaware of its importance. I, as a student who is used to the traditional face-to-face learning, was unaware of how crucial e-learning can be if not done in the proper manner.

Beginning as a revolution, the internet has now become part of the 21st century world. Everything and everyone is getting online. The field of education is no exception, and this is evident from the advent of e-learning. e-learning is a term used to refer to computer based leaning.

E-leaning can be advantageous in many ways:
-it allows students to speed up and slow down as they deem necessary.
-students may choose subjectsaccording to their interest levels.
-more flexibility in terms of time limit and age barrier.
-a classroom-like environment is created online with the interaction of students.

    However, some drawbacks are:
-slow internet connections and older computers make accessing course material difficult.
-e-learning may become boring without live interaction.

From my experience of e-learning from this module, i can say that it is a technology that will remain and evolve through the years.

  171. @ dani...
E-learning is indeed a preferred means of teaching and learning. Through e-learning, students get the opportunity to become more computer literate which is very important in today's world. Do you really think that e-learning lacks human interaction? Tutors and students interact via e-mail, query messages and Skype among others. This is also a way of communicating. Furthermore, there is no doubt that e-learning is cheaper than paying any course at a tertiary institute. Consequently, in the future, students with financial problems may opt for e-learning for further education. On the other hand, students should not take e-learning as an excuse to spend less time on the course.

  172. @yashna: I share your point of view. Indeed e-learning has been evolving over the years and we can expect it to become the most common means of learning in the future due to its numerous benefits that it brings about. Learners are now learning about the importance and advantages of e-learning. As far as the drawbacks of e-learning are concerned, this can now be reduced by using faster internet connections available and ways are now available to make it more interactive and interesting.

  173. E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. The Information and communication systems, whether networked or not, serve as specific media to implement the learning process. The term will still most likely be utilized to reference out-of-classroom and in-classroom educational experiences via technology, even as advances continue in regard to devices and curriculum.
E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration. However, learner ability usually is neglected as an important factor in implementing personalization mechanisms. Besides, too many hyperlink structures in Web-based learning systems place a large information burden on learners. Consequently, in Web-based learning, disorientation (losing in hyperspace), cognitive overload, lack of an adaptive mechanism, and information overload are the main research issues.

Doollah,i have an answer to your question concerning the efficiency of e-learning.
In recent years, numerous Web applications have been developed, such as portal websites (AltaVista; Google; Yahoo; YAM), news websites (CNN; Google News, Taiwannews), various commercial websites (Amazon; eBay), and so on, demonstrating the increasing maturity of the Internet. To help Internet users to search more efficiently, many powerful search tools (Brin & Page, 1998; Chidlovskii, Glance & Grasso, 2000; Kleinberg, 1998; Direct Hit, 2000) have been proposed, such as the Google search engine (Google), or the Citeseer website (NEC Research Institute ResearchIndex). Most of these search tools provide personalized mechanisms to enable users to filter out uninteresting or irrelevant search results.
Furthermore, recent surveys of network behaviors by Yam (The investigation of Yam) have shown that most users apply search engines to find information, and moreover Web learning is a growing trend. According to the analysis of International Data Corporation (IDC) (International Data Corporation), the worldwide corporate e-learning market will exceed US$ 24 billion by 2004. The reason for the growth of is that it provides a convenient and efficient learning environment and practical utilities at anytime and anywhere. Many universities (E-learning in the University of Maryland), corporations (E-learning in Cisco), and educational organization (Distance Learning Resources Network (DLRN)) are developing distance learning platforms to provide course materials for Web-based learning.

I hope these materials were of some use to you.

  175. Actually many people perceive e-learning as described in the 1st paragraph. Though I haven’t had much experiences of e-learning before enrolling for this module, I now believe e-learning is much more than simply looking for pieces of information on the net most of the time. I really think that e-learning has larger potentials. At least, I see it as a supplement to the "higher bandwidth" one get from face-to-face learning. It is indeed of great help to many of us. Here are some advantages I found:
    • Class work can be scheduled around personal and professional work
    • Reduces travel cost and time to and from school

  176. @ Yashna: You are totally right in pointing out that often we are not aware of the advantages provided by e-learning. I myself did not realised how the use of technology(I here refer to out-of-classroom and in-classroom educational experiences via technology)that is, projectors and other materials used in order to help us grasp and understand lessons better were effective.

  177. My perception of e-learning was just to go online, open the required website, start reading the educational material and finally response to some questions and that’s it. But the true fact is that E-learning is far beyond this. There are lots of people behind this that are trying hard to give us the learning material in the RIGHT way. Proper planning, materials, and resources are needed to make E-learning to work perfectly.

It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

  179. E-learning is propagating very quickly. However, as with anything else, there are benefits and limitations as well as pros and cons involved in this teaching method.
One big truth is that despite the existence of the University of Mauritius, University of Technology and several private tertiary institutions, there are still many HSC holders who don’t get a seat to complete their tertiary education although their sincere wish to do so. That is where E-learning comes into play as it is one of the cheapest ways of educating oneself and is available to all. Learners can study wherever they have access to a computer. E-learning is beneficial to people who are from the middle/lower class family as it reduces transport cost to and from school, not to mention all the pricey books and materials which are made compulsory at school. Self-paced modules allow learners to work at their own pace which is quite a good thing over the conventional method of teaching as every student does not have the same IQ. E-learning is very flexible as it allows the learners to join discussions in the bulletin board threaded discussion areas at any hour, or visit with classmates and instructors remotely in chat rooms. Another advantage is the development of computer and internet skills that are transferable to other facets of learners’ lives.
However unmotivated students or those with poor study habits may fall behind and there won’t be anyone to help or guide them individually. They might hereafter lose interest in their studies. Students may also feel isolated and miss social interaction as instructors may not always be available on demand. Slow and unreliable internet connection is a big issue which can lead to frustration and abandonment.
If Mauritius is serious about developing a credible and sound knowledge hub, it is imperative that it secures and strengthens its tertiary education setup. This should be driven by the notion of ensuring quality, equity and access.

  180. @Vicky: It is true that E-learning enables students who are disabled to get access to education but it should not be forgotten that these students may, like may not, need special assistance. And one of E-learning's disadvantages is that students may feel isolated and miss social interaction.
And i completely agree that sometimes it is easier and also less expensive to use E-learning for training purposes than the conventional methods. : )

  181. e-learning is a modern way of learning compared to traditional way which consists of books and printed material and support of a teacher. As a student,i prefer the traditional way.

Even in this modern time,e-learning is not accessible to one and all, while we can say books and paper are accessible.

One disadvantage of eLearning is that learners need to have access to a computer as well as the Internet. They also need to have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail. Without these skills and software it is not possible for the learner to succeed in eLearning.

eLearners need to be very comfortable using a computer. Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials difficult. This may cause the learners to get frustrated and give up.

Another disadvantage of e-learning is managing computer files, software comfortability and learning new software, including eLearning. For learners with beginner-level computer skills it can sometimes seem complex to keep their computer files organized. The lesson points you to download a file which the learner does and later cannot find the file. The file is downloaded to the folder the computer automatically opens to rather than a folder chosen by the learner. This file may be lost or misplaced to the learner without good computer organizational skills.

eLearning also requires time to complete especially those with assignments and interactive collaborations. This means that students have to be highly motivated and responsible because all the work they do is on their own. Learners with low motivation may not complete modules.

Another disadvantage of e-learning is that students may feel isolated and unsupported while learning. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without assistance. eLearners may also become bored with no interaction.

There's stil lots to be done for e-learning to be a real 'reality'

By way of introducing, lets us give a brief review of the background to this topic, e-learning, is the application of web-based learning and computer-based learning, virtual classroom and digital collaboration. What should be established at the very outset is that we are dealing here with a practical issue. It is universally acknowledged that the foremost target of the internet has always been the communication. Furthermore, internet has excelled beyond our expectation; still innovations are going to make it faster and more reliable. Another telling argument in support of this approach is that e-learning is a virtual treasure trove of information which is accessible to the learner at any time, hence, allows class work to be scheduled around personal and professional work. Moreover, self-placed modules allow learners to work at their own place, reducing travel cost.
There is yet another argument which cannot be ignored. The snag about e-learning is that it undermines the principle of poor assignment quality & feedback which hinders learning. Furthermore, poor certification, no ranking, no evaluation of current modules, lack of mentorship, and lack of student motivation will be an issue.
One might be tempted to think that better technology is better solution but in actual fact, human attitudes are the vital elements. Given the controversial nature of the issues, in my opinion, it is wise to the students’ behavior towards learning before implementing this strategy as e-learning might not be edible for every individual; since many organization and institutions provide different forms of training and instruction to lectures. Therefore, this learning style highlights the necessities of special considerations before introducing it in everyday’s life.

    @ Urvashi:
I strongly agree with Urvashi's points. There has been no shortage of explanation why special considerations should be taken into account before implementing e-learning as not everyone is able to cope with digital literacy and keep up with the pace of change. Moreover, lack of adoption to learning styles is felt. Indeed with the increasing availability of the internet and computer technologies we are now able to obtain training and instruction even at home. Furthermore, e-learning removes barriers of time and space, lowers the economics of delivering training

  184. @ youshra and yashna..i totally agree with you both..
After centuries of little change, the role of the teacher as it has been traditionally defined and practiced is on the verge of becoming an anachronism. New and emerging pedagogies have harnessed the power of information and communication technologies bringing dramatic change in the educational landscape, transforming the breadth, depth and opportunities for learning. Significantly, those people who refer to themselves as .teachers. are increasingly on the sidelines, not centre-stage. Learner-centricity is a key facet of the knowledge economy, which itself is characterised by learning organisations, learning management systems, and e-learning.

Teaching, meanwhile, is becoming a peripheral activity. Some institutions have attempted to transplant the old model within the new by delivering didactic pre-recorded lectures and
canned .death-by-PowerPoint.. The .learning. that has taken place is then evaluated within an assessment regime that has been largely unchanged for generations, not because of an extant literature that validates the assessment instruments and the assessment regime, but because these are the tools that have always been used. This paper reflects on past practice and rejoices at the focus on learners and learning and at the technologies and emerging pedagogies that provide profound and exciting learning opportunities for the future.

Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio. E-learning services have evolved since computers were first used in education. There is a trend to move towards blended learning services, where computer-based activities are integrated with practical or classroom-based situations.
It can be seen then that e-learning can describe a wide range of applications, and it is often by no means clear even in peer reviewed research publications which form of e-learning is being discussed.
One concern about e-learning is it seems often to be mainly about delivery and distribution, some drill and practice style testing, with occasional emphasis on explanation. There is little about learning, and attempting to get students motivated. It is great to have on-line resources for people who are motivated, but very many people are not in that category. It is also useful to have resources for people who are in remote areas. A great deal of money and effort may be wasted in so-called e-learning initiatives, since multimedia etc and use of video, are possibly considerably more expensive to produce than simply delivering conventional notes and lectures.

Before talking about e-learning we must know what it is. According to its definition in Wikipedia, “E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching.” Nowadays e-learning has become more efficient due to the new technologies. This method will help students who have a physical handicapped and can’t attend their course regularly. Thus they can work at home without any difficulty. Also this method reduces the amount of money spent. For examples, the cost of traveling and meal. By this method student can work on off hours and can fell more adequate while working at home. This makes the person more independent and responsible. Some of them may get some problems at first. Well this is a common problem a person deal while attempting something for the first time. With time this person will be able to understand on its own. Later on in life this will make the person more successful in its work as this method had made him more experienced in how to learn new things on its own.

Educational technology is a recurring leitmotif in the article dated the 14th November 2010. Its structure consists of 3 paragraphs and each paragraph consists of a main point. The article entitled ‘e-learning Insight’ provides an overall description of the evolution of educational technology. The first paragraph unveils the reaction of a layperson analysis as it is observed in the following lines
“ E-learning?? What’s the big deal? (…) and there you go!”
Besides, it also suggests an ordinary and immature response from a common people. His /Her answer lacks an in depth analysis of the issue. Moreover, the following paragraph contains inquisitive and rhetorical questions which echo the confusions of a common man. The lines below champion this view
“What are the implications of adopting innovative pedagogies for a transformation of the learning process?”
Another interpretation can be that these questions are used as means to improve this pipeline project. Additionally, the second paragraph of this article gives a broad idea of what is e-learning. The last paragraph, in addition, explains how multi-media learning has gained a universal appeal. The verb “recognized” provides ample evidence to support this view.
However, the use of the pronoun “I” in the very first line of the 3rd paragraph is ambiguous.
I believe that the benefits of e-learning overweight its drawbacks and that is why e-learning can be applied in our actual education system. Its advantages can help the country to progress. The main advantages are as follows:
o E-learning is a social network bringing equality. There are no real hierarchies as in communities: God-government-citizens. People from across the borders; irrespective of age, gender, class and nationality can use the internet. Its democratic potential is more significant.
o The collaborative aspect of the e-learning creates more sharing among people. This selfless feature of digital distribution connects people from various cultures, religions and countries. Sites such as Twitter, Face book and e-mails bring people together and hence they acquire the same level.
o The online education system promotes empowerment as most people have access to this learning tool. Jimmy Wales, founder of the online-user generated encyclopedia Wikipedia has enabled millions of people to have practically unlimited access to knowledge and education. Distance learning and online courses are available to many; thus social divisions are subverted to some extent.

  194. An analysis of Michell’s comments on ‘e-learning Insight’
    Hi Michell!
Concerning your analysis of article which is entitled ‘e-learning Insight’, I have to comment on some points. Your first paragraph seems quite interesting and it’s good to do additional research work. Besides I agree to your analysis to a large extent. The first 3 paragraphs reveal the advantages of e-learning; an aiding tool which will help the country towards perfection.
However the use of the words “better education” is a bit ambiguous. I’m very much confused while reading the last line of the 3rd paragraph. Do you mean that “better education” is academic success only? If yes, then you are neglecting other aspects of education. In the long run, the child will end up becoming robotic which is devoid of feelings and qualities such as benevolence, selflessness and good manners. The society will ultimately become dehumanized and chaotic.
The last paragraph involves your original ideas and a very good critical analysis. I do agree with you where you had mentioned that “from being a kid, I have always (…) bad teacher (…) listening and talking (…) learning”. But I think that apart from multimedia learning, there are also many ways of formal and informal education; for example the socialization process which takes place at home, at schools and among peer groups.

For example, students remember more information from a text book that is well organized, with extensive visuals, reflection/interaction points, clear headings, etc. The same concepts exist for online courses—learners learn better through use of clear headings, limited distracters, visuals, screen-friendly fonts, appropriate white space, web safe colors, etc.

E-learning can be CD-ROM-based, Network-based, Intranet-based or Internet-based. It can include text, video, audio, animation and virtual environments. It can be a very rich learning experience that can even surpass the level of training you might experience in a crowded classroom. It's self-paced, hands-on learning.
The quality of the electronic-based training, as in every form of training, is in its content and its delivery. E-learning can suffer from many of the same pitfalls as classroom training, such as boring slides, monotonous speech, and little opportunity for interaction. The beauty of e-learning, however, is that new software allows the creation of very effective learning environments that can engulf you in the material.

I dont really agree with the point when he says that eLearning lacks human interaction .interaction does not only involve physical but it all ways of communication which can be replaced by forums ,blogs ,chats and the best video chats . however Dani brought some other points forward such as it has more scope for learning in our own style.

I totally agree with you, E-learning having both advantage and disadvantage, for example I may be comfortable at home working but I wait at the last minute to do all the works. Moreover it is true that there is the lack of social contact, many will then say facebook etc….But a person in front of you is different to a person on the monitor.

  200. E-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere and is becoming more and more important in today’s life where time is scarce for most of us. With e-learning there has been a new way of learning that is more fun and more comfortable. With the use of audio and video, students are more willing to learn compared to a person in front of us that is talking. For me, e-learning is the best way of learning as I’m home working in my comfortable room.
However many employers don’t trust e-learning, as most of them would like someone to have learned normally to work at their place. They think the human touch is important but what they don’t know is there is the teacher or lecturer that is communicating with us through Skype for the e-learning.
