eLearning Concepts

The term e-Learning does not have a single definition. Furthermore the term is very often used interchangeably with other words like online learning, Internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning. However, if we look closer to the terms, the implications may be different. eLearning can be seen as an acronym for electronic learning. In other words, every form of learning that takes place using digital media as mode of delivery would be seen as e-learning. For instance, an educational programme on television would definitely be e-Learning. However, this technology is quite primitive and lacks interactivity. New e-learning technologies are more interactive that the television mode of delivery, for instance an interactive multimedia education program that runs on a personal computer.

The word online is normally associated with an event that is taking place live and in real-time. For instance, suppose we are watching a movie on television and suddenly the programme is interrupted. Then you see the reporter talking to you live from the stadium where your country has just won the World Cup. So you see him in live telecast, and the reporter on TV can exchange words with the live reporter using a videoconferencing system. The word online is nowadays very much associated with virtual presence on the Internet and the World Wide Web. If you are on a chat room and your colleague is chatting with you, then both of you are online, i.e. virtually present in a place at the same time. So, in the context of online learning, a nice example would be that you are engaged in a chatting session with your lecturer who is away from you but present in a virtual classroom like space to interact with you and offering tutorial support.

The terms internet-based and web-based learning are basically the same. These two terms are also closely related to online learning since the Internet and the World-Wide Web provide the main platform for online learning nowadays. Web-based or Internet-based learning however may comprise of a mix of self-directed learning (through Interactive Web-Sites) and online learning. In this case, there are two types for interaction. The first type is system-based interaction where students interact with the system by browsing through the course material, doing self-assessment exercises and interacting with multimedia elements. The second type of interaction is community-based interaction supported by the system. In this type of interaction, students communicate with peers and lecturers to get academic, pedagogical and sometimes technical support.

On the hand, computer-based learning may be seen as using the computer to learn from interactive stand-alone multimedia CD-ROMs or using the computer to carry out online or internet/web-based learning. In fact, nowadays the computer is the primary tool or mediating instrument to support e-learning.

  1. The Internet-based and web-based learning can be used as medium to present content that would have otherwise been presented in the traditional manner. The use of media graphics and animation help make the presentation more useful. The classroom is very much in use here - for learner feedback, assessments and so on. In an extensible mode, in addition to the above, email and discussion lists are offered through the Internet, but not in real-time. Sometimes, students can take tests online too. However, the primary delivery vehicle is still the classroom. In the third case, an instructional designer prepares a series of self-instructional tutorials, and also provides interactive modules that guide the student through some topics. Online tests and assessments are also tracked and reports generated online. Here, in a complete module of "distance education", along with the presentation of the course with media graphics and animation, collaborative tools like email, discussion lists, live chats, and shared work spaces are used for better learning. Tests and student participation are also tracked online. In this case, the entire course is "virtually" delivered over the Internet. While computer-based learning refers to the use of computers as a key component of the educational environment. While this can refer to the use of computers in a classroom, the term more broadly refers to a structured environment in which computers are used for teaching purposes.

  2. The term e-learning is divided into four concepts; mainly online-learning, internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer -based learning. These four different concepts help a great deal in the learning strategies of students.

E-learning promotes students from their traditional method of learning (face-to-face education) to a more privileged and easy way of acquiring education.

Computer is nowadays an essential tool in the field of education. Through the use of technological tools such as interactive chat systems, email, discussions forums, blogs, web cameras, video cameras, microphones and other digital equipment, institutions have adopted the concept of learning through electronic means. E-learning allows people to learn at their own pace. Learners do not have to travel long distances for studying purposes.

E- learning provides them with all the facilities they need and above all it is cheaper than any other method of learning.

  3. Some years ago the term "e-learning" was defined in terms that " media" like telesvision for example was a mean of teaching. That is television was used as a way of teaching.
But nowadays e-learning is mostly associated to the internet. Courses are made online and students find it more easy to study.
Moreover a student who is online can chat or talk with his tutor or friends and exchange notes, and correct homeworks. When doing this both studens and tutor are interactiong but virtually as they are not in the same room.
E-learning is best suited for distance learning. It is easy to use and is easily accessible to most youngsters

  4. E-learning is an interactive response which is going on between the lecturer and the student going on through the net.It is a virtually interaction which is taking place.
As nowadays computer is an essential tools in all fields, we can say that online learning allow student to learn at there own pace. The course materials are already posted on the site,so as a result of this the student can work the topics and submit the work online.
Even if the lecturer is not there,we have the sense that he or she is present.
As it is said above, students communicate with peers and lecturers to get academic, pedagogical and sometimes technical support and this act as a distance learning course which suit both case.

  5. E-learning some years ago meant learning through media that is broadcasting eduational television programmes where students watched and learned.
But today is associated to internet. Learning online. The world has nowadays become an intensive user of new technologies. This is because life has become more easy. So implementing the use of these technologies in the educational field has bring about considerable benefits to sutdents ans tutors.
Students and teachers or peers can interact together, share opinions, explanations, notes, together but virtually via the internet by chatting. Youngsters use the internet with a certain ease so they find this method of learning more suitable for them and they benefit a lot from it.

  6. I do like the definition of e-Learning in this blog. I think that it is very thorough and looked at almost all aspects of e-Learning. I found it very interesting to relate the idea of e-Learning to us watching our TV to more advanced technologies such as video-conferencing and so on through defining what the terms actually means and its implications. What bothers me is that we are offering these tools mainly to youngsters. The latter, according to me, consider those tools, such as computers and so on, more as a hobby than a learning tool. We must also consider that in our Mauritian context, not everyone is now able to afford a computer, not everyone can afford paying a relatively fast internet connection every month. Furthermore, there are some people who need the human touch to learn better. How can e-Learning solve this? Will the future generations have to be hooked on a computer 24 hours a day? What are the health implications? Sure, e-Learning is fantastic in many ways and I am aware that it is already present in our everyday life. I also do agree that it must be more exploited but there is still one question arousing in my mind: Are we the average Mauritian people, usually very conservative, ready for this drastic change?

Do you think that only the use of media graphics and animation help make the presentation more useful and not the text style and the text also?? I don't agree this fact as there is the page layout, paragraphs and spaces between images, the font text and text also make graphics more easy to understand as we done that in this course of VCILT

  8. The e-learning concept has brought about various benefits for students...but only for those students who do have a computer at home. For those who unfortunately don't have one it is quite difficult to manage. Moreover there is the fact that there is no body language. No visual feedback is being given. Note that it enhances communication even if it is a non-verbal form of communication.

But it's good to note that the advantage is that we can submit our work online and thus no paper work...

In the 21st century, people have to learn more than ever before. Through E-learning, students are encouraged in critical reasoning. They become more responsible and are typically drawn into the subject matter of the lecture more deeply than the traditional way. Moreover research shows that online students had more peer contact with others in the class, enjoyed it more, spent more time on class work, and understood the material and the lecture better than when in classroom. Teaching and communication techniques through e-mail, chat rooms, team works, discussion groups, tutorials etc are different ways how a student can learn and each and every student will have its own way of learning. This type of learning experience eliminates the embarrassment of failure in front of a group. Thus, online learning is less intimidating and this if ever the students have done a work wrong, he/she can still go and try it again.

  10. The concept of E-Learning has helped students in different ways. They are more at ease to express themselves. Anywhere and at anytime they can access the learning platform. Hence, a more flexible and convenient technique to learn. There are many benefits than drawbacks and these cannot be ignored. Some students may feel isolated and unsupported while learning. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without assistance. Moreover, others may have problem in getting through the lecture, submit a work or if there is a new programme they will have to work with, they may not be able access it without proper instructions. Thus, learners may feel discourage and bored with no interaction. This type of learning requires time and learners must be responsible and motivated enough to complete the module on their own.

  11. E-learning stands for electronic-learning and according to this article; it does not have a single definition. In general, it is referred to “every form of learning that takes place using digital media as mode of delivery”. It appears that the term e-learning is similar to words like online learning, internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning. Subsequently, I personally interpret e-learning as a very comfy way of learning as I don’t have to travel to any learning institution to learn therefore I can work very at ease at home and then I also noticed that it stops that habit of mine of always wanting “spoon feeding” from my teachers; it compels me to make research findings and work on my own. Finally it expands my awareness as I am able to learn not only from my tutors but also from my friends.

  12. “E-learning provides the potential to provide the right information to the right people at the right times and places using the right medium.”
E-learning is becoming popular day by day. Due to the internet, this concept is being adopted by many persons. E-learning is flexible, accessible and convenient, that is, users can access an e-learning course at anytime, anywhere and can learn as much as they need. For instance, you have some free time so you can just connect to the internet and read your notes and do the activities posted on the website. There is no need to wait for the teacher to come with the notes or homework. Additionally, e-learning is cheaper in terms of transportation costs compared to the traditional way of going to learn in the classroom. It is also more interesting as "the class" is not boring. However, e-learning is not always beneficial. There is limited bandwidth, that is, concerning sound, video and intensive graphics the performance is slow. Hence, we have to wait for the downloads to finish, whereby, affecting the learning process. Hopefully, this can be overcome by the future technologies.
E-learning is better in this 21st century as we are living in a world where technology is prevailing.

  13. E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. It includes online learning, Internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning. Educational programmes as “knowledge channel”, “Question pour une champion”, “Passerelle” amongst others, which are broadcasted on the television is a perfect instance of e-learning even though lacking the interaction element. However there are other interactive forms of e-learning in this technological world as the interactive multimedia education program that runs on a personal computer. E-learning is possible through video-conferencing as well.
Internet-based and web-based learning are closely related to e-learning via Internet and WWW. An example will be a forum or blog like VCLT or the educational technology forum where students can learn at their own pace and in their own free time. They can even ask questions to their tutors online without the fear factor being present. Moreover, students can interact with other fellow friends of their own age groups to overcome the difficulties they are facing via discussion online.
Computer-based learning is the use of computers to learn from CD-ROMs and so on and again since CD-ROMs may contain interactive pictures, moving images, colours, online learners are more likely to retain he information learnt for a longer time.

  15. @Lalima: I agree with your point of view that the drawbacks of e-learning id limited bandwidth and we have to wait a long time for the download and this indeed affects the learning process.
I would like to further add that there are still some students who come from po0r family background and do not have access to Internet and all and they cannot benefit from e-learning. I do think that the government should bring some light in this aspect where some students are less privileged than others.

  16. E-Learning is all about learning through a medium where there is no physical contact but virtual ones between the teacher and the learner. Courses are followed using ICT tools such as multimedia and the internet.
Knowledge can also be imparted via other means like through educational programs broadcasted on television (e.g. in Mauritius, we have Mauritius College of the Air which presents educational programs to students), or on CDs or tapes (I remember how I used to buy CDs which contained critics of literature books on them. By listening to them constantly I used to make my own notes as well as remember important lines).
However, we tend to associate E-Learning more where we have contact with the one imparting knowledge to us. That is where we can communicate with the latter through emails or video conferencing and ask any questions we have.

    Advantages of E-Learning:
-Students can learn at their own pace.
-Students can take courses offered from anywhere in the world.
-It is usually cheaper to get a degree as there will be no physical classroom or travelling involved.
-Students can also earn certificates or degrees while working and earning money.

  17. E-learning is a according to this blog is a very broad concept. I myself never associated e-learning with educational programme on television but it is a very interesting way to thing of it. It is like saying: no need to move from your house to acquire knowledge,. Just sit in front of your PC and knowledge will come to you. However, is this really true? Some people need personal assistance to be able to learn. Moreover for e-learning to take place one should be computer literate so it is not accessible to everyone.
Furthermore, since e-learning is being done on the internet or the World Wide Web wont the student be tempted to browse on other web pages while learning? Won't he be more distracted by that type of education? What about health problems?
E-learning does bring to us students a lot of advantages. Nevertheless it is still a cheese full of holes.

  19. E-learning is essentially the computer and network-enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio. The concept of E-Learning has helped students in different ways. They are more at ease to express themselves. Students have some free time so you can just connect to the internet and read your notes and do the activities posted on the website. 20. @ Trisha, is this what you think? That e-learning is a more easy of acquiring education? I do not agree to this. Not everyone like to learn on computers and some people find it more easy to learn via books and need assistance, for example a teacher, to learn . That is one of the reason why e-learning cannot remove the need tangible materials like textbooks .

  21. E-learning can be an asset to some students. It helps in developing the characteristics of the student by making him or her more responsible and independent. Students can easily get access to their course materials, which is very helpful. E-learning has a greater number of audiences as the number of students is not limited due to the space available for a classroom. However printed material is still being used as not everyone has the financial facilities to have a personal computer at home and to pay for the internet bill at the end of the month. But e-learning can contribute to a much better education in the future if we have the proper technological implementation.

  22. Surely, e-learning, as the name implies, stands for electronic learning and hence every form of learning that takes place through a digital medium. Therefore, both the “educational programme on the TV” and “the interactive multimedia education programme on a PC” as cited in the article, are categorized as e-learning even if the former is now outdated and lacks interactivity.

Online-learning is a subset of e-learning as it is performed through digital media as well. But it is not exactly the same because e-learning is not essentially a live process and does not necessarily implicate the virtual presence of a person.
Computer-based-learning is another form of e-learning but does not necessarily take place via the internet.

In my opinion, e-learning carries with itself its benefits as well as its shortcomings.
    Some of its benefits are:
    • Students are able to learn anytime and anywhere.
    • Self-paced learning
    • Reduced travel cost and travel time for students
    • Encourage a student to work independently without the usual habit of “spoon-feeding”

    Some of its shortcomings are:
    • Limited access to the computer or the internet to some students
    • Some students still prefer the traditional method of learning as they view e-learning as a method which lacks social interactivity with the teacher. They prefer face-to-face discussions rather than teleconferencing, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Briefly, e-learning is the use of technology to enable people to acquire knowledge whenever they want and wherever they are. It is very advantageous to students. For instance, one can go onto the e-learning platform during free time and can do the work at ease at home under no pressure. Hence it is not boring like going in class and having to sit for hours in a class listening to lectures together with so many factors preventing the student from concentrating. Furthermore in a class there are many factors which can prevent certain students to ask questions while on an e learning platform, such students will be able to clear their doubts without any hesitation. And in this new era we are in, such type of technologies are becoming a must in many situations. But there are drawbacks as well such as it is not affordable to everybody. Hence to such students, it becomes a trouble for them to get access to the e-learning platform. Another problem is that getting used to such platforms affects a student ability to communicate easily. For example they can find it difficult to present something in front of the whole class in which interaction is involved.

  24. E-learning is a means of education that incorporates self-motivation, communication, efficiency, and technology. Because there is limited social interaction, students must keep themselves motivated. The isolation intrinsic to e-learning requires students to communicate with each other and the instructor frequently to accomplish their assigned tasks. E-learning is efficient as it eliminates distances and subsequent commutes. Distance is eliminated because the e-learning content is designed with media that can be accessed from properly equipped computer terminals, and other means of Internet accessible technology.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ annesophie: I totally agree with your views. E-learning is not always efficient. It also has disadvantages such as:
    • Learners with low motivation may fall behind
    • May get lost or confused about course activities or deadlines
    • May feel isolated from their teacher or classmates
    • The teacher may not always be available when needed
    • Complex management of computer files and online learning software
    • Slow internet connections cause frustration
But we cannot also deny the enormous advantages of e-learning.

  26. E-learning does not have a single definition. It includes online learning, internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning.
According to me, e-learning has its advantages as well as disadvantages.
For some people who wish to continue their education but do not live within driving distance of a college, they can do e-learning. Also, it allows students to work and learn at their own pace without the unyielding time restrictions of traditional learning. The fact that e-learning provides access to learning materials at any time, students have the flexibility to schedule around families, jobs and other activities. Moreover, students can learn from anywhere in the world. This is an important consideration for those who wish to study in another country. E-learning can be done from home, therefore no travel expenses are required.
However, a major disadvantage to e-learning is the self-discipline it requires. While being able to work at your own pace can be an advantage, it can also be a disadvantage. This is especially true for students who have difficulty with time management and procrastination. These students tend to be more successful with the structure of traditional learning. Also, some people do not have ready access to a computer and Internet connection. Furthermore, lack of interaction between teacher and student is another drawback to e-learning. Some students need the immediate feedback that interaction provides.

  29. E-learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teaching. In fact, it is any form of learning that takes place using digital media as mode of delivery. Somehow what used to be delivered in a traditional manner, in the past, can nowadays be presented to students in a different way using the Internet and multimedia. Though e-learning, online learning, internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning tend to sound likewise they have different implications. Online is associated with an event occurring live and in real-time. I see e-learning as being advantageous since it reduces travel time and costs. People do not need to displace themselves so as to follow courses. If they have Internet facilities they can choose what to learn and when. For me, learning from home itself is a major advantage. I spend much time travelling to and from university, sometimes causing me to be stressed when caught in a traffic jam fearing to be late for courses. If allowed to learn from home I can do so at my own pace, choosing when to start and when I want a break. Also, all the information I need is easily accessible on the net. Thus, I do not need to constantly depend on my tutors. I can carry out my own research. I firmly believe that self-learning is the best form of learning where we try new things and learn from our own mistakes. With the Web as a virtual platform e-learning can be expanded. Moreover, learning can take place wherever we want. If some courses are not dispensed in a country students do not necessarily have to travel abroad to follow these courses if they are available online. Finally, we can say that discussions among peers allow opinions to be shared and corrections to be made if someone has wrongly understood a subject matter. According to me, e-learning reinforces learning skills and builds self-confidence.

However, e-learning limits human-to-human contact. After some time students start to feel isolated and miss social interaction. We tend to socialise less and less since we are constantly glued to our PC screen. Further, the instructor may not always be available on demand and slow internet connection may lead to frustration. Students need to be guided by their tutors in their studies.

Thus, I think that e-learning is an advantage but we cannot completely eliminate classrooms, books and the former mode of teaching.

Hey Annesophie! I think that you raised an interesting point by saying that e-learning is beneficial only to the computer literates. Those who do not know how to manipulate a computer or do not even have one at home are at a major disadvantage. Also, slow internet access or no internet facilities at home can cause stress, especially when deadlines to be met are expiring. Once again, online submission of work poses problem. Therefore, we can see that e-learning, despite all the advantages that it provides, is not accessible to all.

  32. hi Joelle!

what you have said is indeed correct. It is true that e-learning is very helpful to students. but what about its negative aspects? what about those who cannot afford for such technologies? what about the communication skills a student will acquire by being in a class rather than just doing everything on the net? so what i think is that the higher authorities must think of the needy ones and that we must not entirely depend on e-learning. there should be a balance between e-learning methods and the usual teaching method.

You are absolutely right by what you have pointed out. Indeed we are more at ease when we are at home and learning rather than having to go to an institution because there is no stress. but don't you think going to an instituiton and interacting with teachers and friends will be better for us? and it's more fun as well.

Sometimes, the term is associated with other words like online learning, Internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning.
Undoubtedly, the students benefit from the e-learning concepts due to the new e-learning technologies. The students can study at a time and location they prefer and can obtain the study material very quickly. Furthermore, computer-based instruction can give instant feedback to students and explain correct answers and a computer is patient and non-judgmental which can give the student motivation to continue learning. The student can also make use of instant messaging to interact with his/her lecturer for tutorial support. Moreover, many different types of educational software are designed and developed to help children or teenagers to learn specific subjects.
Nevertheless, e-learning do have drawbacks. The students might waste a lot of time chatting with peers or play video games instead of doing their educational tasks. The computer can fail to function properly due to virus or weather condition like thunderstorm.

The author has defined e-learning from a new perspective as compared to a few years ago where e-learning only meant watching documentation on TV. E-learning is flexible, accessible and convenient, that is, any persaon can access the internet and thus any specific website, anywhere and can learn as much as they need.

Students and teachers or peers can interact together, share opinions, explanations, notes, together but virtually via the internet by chatting. Youngsters use the internet with a certain ease so they find this method of learning more suitable for them and they benefit a lot from it.

In short, e-learning has benefited people a lot in terms of cost, time and personal development.

  37. E-learning is a means of education that incorporates self-motivation, communication, efficiency and technology. Besides, eLearning is divided into four different concepts namely online learning, internet based learning, web based learning and computer based learning.
With eLearning real time communication is implemented such as video conferencing, teleconferencing and online chat programs and it also implements other means of communication that does not require real time responses such as e-mail, blogs and online forums.
Flexibility is a major benefit of e-learning. E-learning has the advantage of taking class anytime anywhere. Education is available when and where it is needed. E-learning can be done at the office, at home, 24 hours a day, and seven days a week.
It makes absolutely no doubt that in this 21st century computers have become an indispensible tools in education. It helps students to work from home at their own pace and submit their assignments online itself.
    • But what about those students coming from poor families?
    • Will they find themselves in a position to opt for this new type of education?
    • Is eLearning education only for those who can afford to have a computer with internet access?

Therefore, we can easily come to the conclusion that eLearning as a means of education has both its positive and negative impact on the society and students as a whole.

  38. ELearning is the next generation learning methodology but even nowadays we have it somewhere in our daily life. ELearning has been referred as internet-based, online and computer-based learning, so we see that without a computer we cannot use this new learning technology and optionally without the internet. In Mauritian’s context, many schools and universities have computers to offer the students the best education, but if we see in under developed countries there are still infrastructure problems. The government must implement these new learning methodologies to make the students more ‘dynamic’ during their coursework. ELearning is to be virtually present to have conversations with peers in the same class or worldwide. Videoconferencing, online groups, networking sites, blogs, forums etc… are all examples of eLearning. In this post the author has classified the two types of interaction into system-based and community-based. System-based interactions mean to use multimedia CD-ROMs like encyclopedia or video tutorials to search and learn topics taught in the course. Community-based interactions are to have interactions with other classmates/lecturers to broader their knowledge and to ask questions.
ELearning self-organizes a student and make him/her more dependent. It makes the students think rationally and make them more motivated to work in this modern way. The primary tool for this learning method is computer and optionally an internet connection.

  39. E-Learning indeed does not has a single definition as the term is very often used interchangeably with other words like online learning, Internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning. New e-learning technologies are more interactive than that of the television mode of delivery.
The word online is nowadays very much associated with virtual presence on the Internet and the World Wide Web and a nice example would be that you are engaged in a chatting session with your lecturer who is away from you but present in a virtual classroom like space to interact with you and offering tutorial support Furthermore E-learning promotes students from their traditional method of learning (face-to-face education) to a more privileged and easy way of acquiring education. The terms internet-based and web-based learning are basically the same since they both provide the main platform for online learning nowadays.
On the contrary computer-based learning may be seen as using the computer to learn from interactive stand-alone multimedia CD-ROMs or using the computer to carry out online or internet/web-based learning. Hence it can be denoted that the computer is the primary tool or mediating instrument to support e-learning.

Indeed, being able to display information graphically and being able to interact with people who are absent physically but present virtually with the mean of e-learning concept is an advantage as people can communicate without having to travel, thus saves time and money. However, there is no personal contact which in some cases is very important for understanding to take place.
More and more things are being possible with this concept,as the article said “video conferencing” while broadcasting the news.It somehow help in the widespreading of information more quickly thus enabling audiences to have the same information as those present physically. However, this also enables things like people being able to exposed themselves nude to other people and being able to interact at the same time, especially in an illegal manner.
Infact,if these concepts are well used, that is,users do not misuse these concepts,it might become the best way to communicate among large group of people, even between two individuals.

  41. E-learning as explained in this article does not have a single definition. It covers online learning, Internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning.I personally view e-learning as a good way of learning as it allows the student to be responsible, independent and allows the student to develop a critical and analytical mind which eradicates the concept of spoon feeding as you should depend on yourself. Also,it provides a flexible time for learning which is not stressful.Students can work at their own pace and also there is no need for any transportation which is also a waste of time.E-learning also allows you to access your course anytime and anywhere an internet connection is available.E-learning also allows you to interact with your peers and your lecturers via a blog, msn or skype where you can help each other in case of difficulties with the courses. This makes e-learning more interactive and less boring.

I think positively that e-learning has simplified in many ways the approach of communicating, saving time, organizing distant mode of learning and above all saving paperwork thus promoting conception of Maurice Ile durable. But beware of abuses! Sometimes interaction in classes among students is a more vivid experience than fixing letters, notations, and diagrams on a speechless “screen”.

  43. On the web we can find various definitions of eLearning and this article gives a good image of what it is in fact. I do agree that that eLearning has evolved with the passage of time and it is becoming more and more efficient. The definition of e-learning varies depending on the organization and how it is used but basically it is involves electronic means of communication, education, and training. I personally think that eLearning is simply a medium for delivering learning and like any other medium, it has its advantages and disadvantages. E-learning covers a wide array of activities from supported learning, to blended learning (the combination of traditional and e-learning practices), to learning that occurs 100% online. Now since I am myself doing an eLearning module I can say that it is helping me to broaden my way of thinking and express my points of view, which is much more effective compared to the way it would have been if I were in a class.

  44. This article highlights the importance of e-learning. E-learning has been increases the availability of educational opportunities. E-learning situation such as learning from information on CD-ROMS, is beneficial for both learners and tutors. They have flexibility to schedule around families, jobs and other activities. In the future more distance learning will take place, as more and more teachers are using technology to support their teaching. This is because students will have greater access to learning materials, and there might be no travelling as well. However, the question arises whether immediate feedback is always available during the interaction or what about students who have difficulty in time management and procrastination? There some discipline that need to be taught within traditional learning systems.

  45. E-LEARNING CONCEPTS

E-Learning comprises all forms of electronically supported learning and teachings. The information and communication system serve as specific media to implement the learning process. It forms part of the Web Based Learning (WBL), Computer Based Learning (CBL), virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration.

Firstly, e-learning when analyzed has both positive and negative impact on users. In this modernized era, the use of e-learning has proved to be useful in terms of time saved to travel and attend classes at a specific place and at a particular time. On top, e-learning process operates on a 24-hour basis, in other words, one can access the site whenever he is free to go through the lecture notes available online.

As mentioned in the article above, different types of interaction are involved with lecturers like technical and pedagogical supports which define structures of educational material. However, the pedagogy should be an ideal one rather than a too simple or complex one where the educator effectively creates educational materials while simultaneously providing the most engaging educational experiences for students.

  47. Hi Annesophie!
Despite being in this century where computer forms an integral part of our life, I agree that not everyone has access to the Net and not everyone is computer literate. But as the saying goes “When there is a will, there is a way”, those who have enrolled for distance learning have to find an alternative in order to be in line with the work and notes being provided. We can find cyber-café where those not having internet facilities can go to do their work.

I strongly agree to the fact that no paper work involved implies a positive contribution to our environment, since as we know, paper comes from wood pulp and cutting trees would mean further harming our world where pollution is already a drastic issue. Additionally, no space is required to keep the printed materials and we do not even have to worry about how to discard them when they will be of no use.

  48. E-LEARNING CONCEPTS

In our knowledge-based society, data are stored, disseminated and made accessible using information and communication technologies (ICT). Learning processes are increasingly being organized and conducted by means of ICT, an arrangement described as “e-learning”.
The term e-learning can be divided into four concepts namely internet-based learning, web-based learning, online learning and computer-based learning.
E-learning normally provides a more individualized, self-paced learning experience. It has proved advantageous to students. For instance, one can do the work at ease provided on the Net without any pressure on the part of lecturers. Also, in a class students might be reluctant to ask lecturers questions due to fear of the lecturer or they are shy. Thus, online these students can clear their doubts without hesitation by sending a mail to the trainer.
However, the e-learning platform does have short comings. Some students still prefer the traditional way of learning as they lose interests in the work if there is no social interaction which helps them to study far much better. Furthermore, slow learners may fall behind and there may be internet problems and so forth.
As seen, e-learning possess both positive and negative aspects and now it’s up to the user to make the most effective use of this great tool which forms part of our every day life.

  49. E-learning concept(Electronic learning)is when we make use of the Multimedia tools to Learn. I agreed with my friends that the new e-learning technologies are more interactive as we can be in Virtual contact with our Lecturers for our Distant Learning Courses. We have SKYPE or FORUM OF DISCUSSION where we can interact and inquire if we have not understood things. We, students, we can also communicate with other students or the Lecturers to get Technical support. This type of interaction is known as COMMUNITY-BASED Interaction. Whereas System-based Interaction is where we interact with the system by browsing through Course materials, by doing self-assessment exercises. We can also learn through CD ROM interactive or watching Documents on television but it is less efficient as we are passive students. We just watch, we don't develop our critical thinking in that context.

  50. We can clearly see in this article, that interestingly, online learning, internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer-based learning
    have distinct and precise implications.
E-learning is certainly a very effective method of learning based on the following arguments:
-E-Learning from television programs may be more captivating than merely listening to a teacher standing in front of a classroom.
-New e-learning technologies such as interactive multimedia education programs may prove to be very productive in the case where students participate and interact with the system
-Online learning through teleconferencing and chat rooms enable online live discussions, information exchange and clarifications can be made on the spot.
They present an effective and efficient means of communication; for instance, people do not actually have to travel and meet physically
    to share theirs views.
-Internet and web-based learning provide useful educational resources.
-Computer-based learning enable the use of technology as an aid to learning.

In the light of the above, it can be said that e-learning may prove to be very useful, practical and effective.
However, it can be observed that some people encounter difficulties in adapting to this system:
-Educational programs on television fail to provide a platform whereby questions may be asked and opinions shared.
-Some students may also lack motivation to participate actively in an interactive multimedia education program and this may result in superfluous learning.
Also, poor understanding may lead to discouragement and the student may eventually lag behind.
-Internet and web-based learning may at times offer irrelevant information in the case where accuracy in research is missing.
Research may thus become a very time-consuming and tedious task.
-Students who do not have a personal computer at home or lack proper training in using one, may find computer-based learning difficult.

E-learning may certainly be a very good system provided that students are able and willing to make best use of the facilities and resources it provides.
In many cases, self discipline plays an important role in determining the outcomes of such an educational system.
But even then, in one way or another, the presence of a teacher in education remains priceless.

  51. Basically e learning has been defined as the transferring of information from mind to mind through the use of digital media. As time and technology evolves the Medias used to make this transfer have also been modified so that there is more interactivity between students and teachers.
Online classes through the web based learning, enables the teacher and the student to be able, even when they are miles away to interact and learn and teach without constraints. So when a student has whatever problem regarding some work, he can be able to interact with his teacher without having to physically be present in front of him (community – based interaction). Another type is the system – based interaction which enables the student to interact with the system, go through the course materials and do self – assessing works to see his own progress.
Graphics in a media – based classroom enables the thorough comprehension of the topic being explained, as the student will have a certain attraction towards the graphics displayed and be interested with the class compared to the classical white board.
To conclude e learning has got many advantages in terms of time, energy, and stationery saving.

However this can be overcome as at present we have lots of cyber cafes where one can get access to the internet and thus they can learn via the e-learning concept. Additionally, we have also the computer labs that are present in universities, schools and also at the workplace whereby, an individual can easily get access to the internet. Therefore we should consider these factors also.

  54. Hi Michael ...
i found your post very interesting and i’d like to add a few points to what you have already mentioned. It is crystal clear that youngsters do not use computer tools to their fullest. As such, when talking about computers, people only tend to drive themselves towards the downloading of songs, programs, games, chatting, social networking (facebook, myspace and others) and other activities.

Speaking about our Mauritian context, we have to bear in mind that our Government is coming up with the principle of one laptop per child very soon; and each laptop will the equipped with the necessary facilities along with appropriate internet connectivity. At least, this is a very good start for young students. For instance, students should be making very good use of the proposed facilities to render their learning process more fruitful.

Learning online does not mean that one has to be online for 24hours. Yes, the issue will crop up when one has to attend a particular talk, seminar, conversation and group work at a specific time; as we should not forget that online learning implies that learners are from different countries and thus specific meeting time has to scheduled.

Yes, it is an issue that in the Mauritian context, from kindergarten to tertiary level of schooling, learners have been subjected to a more traditional face-to-face method of learning and people are hesitant to new learning methods. But, change is inevitable.
E-learning is just another gateway to a more scientific way of learning. Change for e-learning has already occurred in Mauritius. There are presently many private institutions, affiliated with foreign universities, offering degrees through e-learning. Here, i’d rather point out that e-learning is a plus and not a compulsory tool for learning. Instead, e-learning is proving to be of a more flexible way of learning to people. Flexible in the sense that the learners don’t have to move physically to that place, learners can learn at their own pace; learners can save on their travel and lodging costs.

Also, we should not forget that many of us, presently are subjected to e-learning in this module. This is indeed quite an irony. Isn’t it? Have we not decided to try this new method of acquiring knowledge?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hello Veejaya... yes i still do believe that, of course, compared to moving abroad, finding a place to live, getting acquainted with the life style, environment, the people; learning at the pace which suits you but still meeting the required deadlines, e-learning is an easier way of acquiring knowledge. As i mentioned in an earlier post, we are all subjected to change. Change because sometimes we are left with no other options. My question, why have you decided to join in this course despite knowing that it were going to be fully online?

Books have their importance in the way that they can be used as supporting materials as they are used in the traditional face-to-face education. But books are nonetheless also available on the net, as any other information are.

  56. E-Learning concepts
E learning has evolved through the years as the best way of learning ten years ago was the tradition written paper or blackboard. But with the advance in technology people need to be developed, intelligent and should learn more than ever before as nowadays, almost everything is based on internet, learning online. The world has nowadays become an intensive user of new technologies since each and everyone has the ability to hire or purchase, for example, a computer or laptop which has been impossible for some families some years ago. Due to such changes, these technologies in the educational field have brought about considerable benefits to students and tutors. Students and lecturer or peers can communicate together; share their ideas, explanations, notes, together but virtually via the internet by using webcam. Youngsters use the internet with a certain ease so they find this method of learning more suitable for them since it is believe that student can simulate more by viewing images or video presentation session where they benefit a lot from it not only in term of knowledge but also to develop their way of communicating.

  59. eLearning Concepts
eLearning stands for electronic learning and hence every form of learning that takes place through a digital medium. It is one of the various ways through which one may learn.
Helping those who do not have sufficient time to attend traditional classes and those who are physically handicapped are only the general advantages of this system.
Additionally, e-learning is cheaper in terms of transportation costs compared to the traditional way of going to learn in the classroom. It is also more interesting as "the class" is not boring.
However, it also consists of its shortcomings such as
    • Limited access to the computer or the internet to some students.
    • Some students still prefer the traditional method of learning as they view e-learning as a method which lacks social interactivity with the teacher. They prefer face-to-face discussions rather than teleconferencing, etc.
So, to conclude, one may say that not all students are adapted to the concepts of online-learning.

  60. Hello yoshini_7…
I agree only partially with what you mentioned. Personally, I am not convinced that proper communications could be done during eLearning lessons. Friends and lecturers will not have a complete easiness to explain what the other students have not understood. It is quite tedious to do so without face to face discussions and explanations.

  61. E-learning is efficient as it eliminates distances and subsequent commutes.E-learning is beneficial to education, corporations and to all types of learners. It is affordable, saves time, and produces measurable results. E-learning is more cost effective than traditional learning because less time and money is spent traveling. Since e-learning can be done in any geographic location and there are no travel expenses, this type of learning is much less costly than doing learning at a traditional institute.

  62. In this new era e-learning has gain great amount of importance. E-learning refers to use of digital media for learning. Nowadays many people prefer to work and study at the same time. Thus e-learning is of a great help to them as they just have to go home after work and get everything they need on the internet when they are free. They can also undertake online examinations. E-learning is more interesting with the community based interaction, where student can have support whenever they need with peers and lectures in cases of lack of understanding.
However e-learning does have some disadvantages. Many still prefer the ancient method of teaching, i.e. face to face communication, especially the slow learners who may have difficulties.
E-learning has both advantages and disadvantages. But it should be used where it is appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Nowadays, the learning process has changed enormously from normal copybooks and handouts to E-learning. E-learning truly has brings lot of innovation, facilitation, and has helped a lot in the educational system. Using this type of medium to learn; students are pushed towards self-learning and self-development as being online with E-learning does not mean that you are necessarily with a friend or tutor. Thus student are sometimes left to their own with the sufficient educational materials and learning aids, so this is how, e-learning can be very beneficial for students as they will be learning at their own pace and independently. But in an another case, being online in a “virtual class” with lots of friends and lecturer, can be very fun as there will be lots of interaction, sharing of ideas, discussion about any subject and can get more explanation from the tutor.

  64. E-learning is every form of learning that takes place using digital media as mode of delivery. It includes online learning, Internet-based learning, web-based learning and computer based learning. E-learning has both benefits and drawbacks just like the two sides of a coin.
    Advantages of e-learning:

    • Students don’t need to move from home to school. As such there is no wastage of time and money. This encourages distance learning. People can work and learn easily provided they are motivated and self disciplined.

    • Students communicate with peers and lecturers to get academic, pedagogical and sometimes technical support.

    • Students can learn at their pace and there is no pressure. They can access the learning platform anytime and anywhere.

    • It helps learners to really learn by themselves instead of just following a boring class. This makes them more responsible and independent.

    Disadvantages of e-learning:

    • Not every family can afford computers and Internet.

    • Students tend to become antisocial. Life should be live face to face not only virtually.

    • Students may feel discourage and bored with no interaction.

    • Learners usually need guidance for success in education. Traditional way of teaching indeed helps them to understand the concept unlike online module.

Therefore to conclude I’ll say there must be a balance in both types of learning, traditional classroom and online modules. As such the students will be fully prepared to face the world of work.

Learner has opportunities for reflection and application. It can also be transformed for use in a variety of standard formats - XML, HTML, DHTML, PDA, etc. in a variety of environments, both formal and informal. 69. As said e-learning has various definition, e-Learning is the use of technology to enable people to learn anytime and anywhere. e-Learning can include training, the delivery of just-in-time information and guidance from experts. If you could stop time and inexpensively bring together all of the people in your organization who need to learn and the resources to teach them, you would not need e-learning. In the real world, people have jobs to do and budgets are limited. Your learning program will need the power of technology to overcome the limitations of time, distance and resources. No single e-learning method is best for every learning need. You will most likely need to use several e-learning technologies as well as traditional learning methods. A blended learning program combines e-learning and traditional learning methods. Blended learning can provide the convenience, speed and cost effectiveness of e-learning with the personal touch of traditional learning.

  73. E-learning is the unifying term to describe the fields of online learning, web-based training, and technology-delivered instruction. It can have multiple definitions considering few that have been mentioned in this particular article. Nevertheless, most interpretations focus on the technology (the "e") and not on the learning and in some cases e- learning has become a distraction for learners rather than a tool to enhance the learning process.

  74. @ Joelle:
Indeed, in the modern era, e-learning has made life to become more practical whereby pressure on the mind is not exerted as the learner learns at his own pace. Conversely, new tools which are being adopted in the learning process seem to favour young learners more than the old ones. Those students more precisely “the elders” may feel isolated or miss social interaction and the instructor may not always be available on demand.

For the third point, that is, "students can work at their pace and their is no pressure", I think that " no pressure" may lead to passiveness for a student who is not well disciplined. A mild dose of pressure always gives rise to motivation to do the best one can which is quite elemental in the education field. However, this will not be a major problem for someone who is responsible and disciplined.

  76. Hi Preetimah, I agree totally with your points and the way they are well organized.

    I agree to you.
E-learning is quite interesting as it helps student to use the new technologies to do their studies. With the use of online learning and web-based learning it allows student to get both tutorial and technical support. Also multimedia CD-ROMs can be used to learn in an interactive way.
But still those who can't afford a computer will not be able to get access to the online learning services.

  78. E-Learning can be defined as the use of new multimedia technologies and the internet to improve the quality of learning by facilitating access to resources and services as well as remote exchanges and collaboration. From my point of view, E-learning consists of electronic technologies which are used as vehicles for education services and resources, and conduits for collaboration and communication. In other words, e-Learning can simply be defined as online access to learning resources, anywhere and anytime.

Elo dr, I have some points to discuss with you about your previous post. To start with, I completely agree with you on the fact that e-learning allows one to learn anytime and anywhere he wants, hence, helping in the improvement of education. Moreover, as you mentioned e-learning allows one to study at his own pace, no matter of other students, he thus clearly understand on what he has to learn at ease. Furthermore, due to e-learning a person saves lot of time and money as well in the run as he do not have to travel. Another aspect to consider is that via this method of learning pupils are more independent since they are not completely spoon fed, they have to make research work in order to understand their task better. To conclude with, we can see that e-learning is full of advantages in educational process and must be taken in great consideration.

  80. E-learning is the new way for people around the world with an Internet connection to have interaction and learn new concepts without having to leave their houses. In fact e-learning allows people to be able to learn online whenever and wherever they are without being limited to time and environment. E-learning also allow people to access data easily and thus understanding quickly what they are learning.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @melanie.francois2 I agree with you because with the help of e-learning the interaction between lecturer and students is easier done, the students can learn with the online materials already on the site and thus can forge their own opinions while at the same time being able to consult their lecturers in case of doubt. E-learning is a good method of learning because thus people can do online group work and it suits all the persons involved

    ReplyDelete
  82. E-learning is an interaction between one person and another but in our case we are interested to demonstrate how e-learning helps in acquiring knowledge. Does it really help or it it more of an obstacle?
Ah! how technology makes our life easier: no more waking up early to go to our morning lectures, no more being compelled to go to the library and studying 4 to 5 books to get the information needed in our courses, no need anymore to go to the office of our lecturer to get answers to our questions! The e-learning is here! We can communicate with our lecturers without having to wait for him outside his/her office. You send an email and you get the reply later in the day. There’s no need anymore to go out of our way to learn because e-learning makes it possible to learn at home or at any distance you want. You get full access to the work related platform and your lecturers are only a click away. If that doesn’t make life easier, what will?!
Online learning allow us (the students) to learn at our own pace and we have the course materials right at hand (no need to go to look for those old and dusty and especially not easy to get books!) Plus the lecturer is like omnipresence on the e-learning platform. We have the sense of being well surrounded and supported not only by our helpful lecturers but also with fellow students. We can help each other while working on a given topic. Distance learning works well both for the lecturers and the students. Both of them are not stuck from 9 to 5 in a dreary classroom and are freer of their movement.

I agree with you there. E-learning is good when we are learning at our own pace and individually but it can also be fun to have a sort of 'conference' with everybody online including the lecturer. There will be a lot of sharing of ideas. It's good to work independently but a little cooperation and some brainstorming keeps the creative juice going. Also your comment has highlighted something to me: The traditional classroom may be an old and obsolete way of learning but i think that nothing can replace the competitiveness found there. For example, if you want to do a debate and you want to refute the opponents' point, doing so physically adds more spice, more action and show your passion for what you believe in. But by virtual presence, the effect is loss. That is my opinion anyway. The best way to learn, i think, is to mix both the traditional and the modern way of learning. Since learning can be a dreary and boring thing, adding a little spice while conveying the fire of your conviction can help keep the class awake and makes everybody participate too. Moreover, we must understand one thing: we go to university to learn, yes but also to develop the social aspects of our personality. with e-learning, the social part of our learning is neglected.

  84. ELearning can be defined in various ways, meaning that it has different definitions. It is mostly associated with online learning. Nowadays, we find that eLearning is a very useful method of learning as students can complete their studies just by using their computers or laptops. I agree that nowadays the only tool to eLearning is the computer as it is through the computer that students can attend their online courses and complete the tutorials. However, it is not true that “technology is quite primitive and lacks interactivity”, as technology is a means to connect people and it is easier to interact using the new technologies.

    ReplyDelete
  85. As much as E-learning is effective, it does not replace the effectiveness of a teacher explaining, on a blackboard, for example, with as much illustrations as possible. If facial expressions can be read, then it is easy to know whether the student has understood or not when the teacher explains in real-time. As far as E-learning is concerned, the student’s comprehension is not guaranteed. The explanation given on the e-leaning interface may not adapt to the student’s assimilation process.
What happens if the computer breaks down? Or if there is a power failure which loses all the safeguarded self-assessments and works done by the student. Internet connection has a pivotal role to play in the E-learning process too, in terms of rapidity. A student with high internet connection is better equipped to do any work faster, be it researches on the internet or downloading important files related to his work. It goes without saying that the other student who has low internet connection lags behind in all the ways possible, which is unfair. Needless to say that all the equipment needed to have a flawless e-learning environment, money is needed. All these have proven to be costly.

    ReplyDelete
  86. To some extent I do agree with you fanny. Learning should be made of both the traditional one and e-learning. Different methods of learning enables someone to think and learn must faster. Which of the following ideas tempts someone the most? Having a book, with dog-eared and yellowing pages, or an online book downloaded from eBook? For a traditional reader the physical book is more tempting. I am talking here about a book, be it a Romance, a Thriller or an Educational book. There are techniques that students employ while studying. For example, I underline the keywords while I study. This makes the assimilation process go faster. Does the e-leaning platform provide us with the ease of putting our usual habits into practice? Or do we have to follow a strict regime where everything has to be done by the rules? Doing things by the rule, as it is, goes against the nature of a 15-year old adolescent. The latter likes changes. How can we forget the numerous diseases associated with computers? Repetitive Strain Injuries, wrists pain, wrong postures, eye weariness and so on! Debates can take place online too, but the idea here is prevent a student from suffering from the Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) and make him aware that the learning process is not derived only from a virtual but also from a real life.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Downloading and installing a learning platform seems to be very easy, but for that learners need to have access to computers and internet. We cannot forget the need of a minimum know-how about the use of the materials. As user-friendly as a computer can be, there may be other elements that could slow down the learning process such as slow internet connections. The learners might give up easily if so is the case. Beginners might find file-management difficult if the learner has mediocre computer organizational skills. Motivation and willingness to work is important since most of the work has to be done by themselves. Isolation is an important factor to be considered. Teachers are not there to give instructions and there is a lot of self-dependency. Boredom is prone to follow.

  88. E-learning is an effective learning process which transfers skills and knowledge by electronic applications. E-learning has become a key for a lifelong learning and is growing very rapidly. It includes Web-based learning, Computer-based learning, virtual classrooms and the use of audio and video recording. E-learning consists of different learning styles and facilitates learning through variety of activities. Many students find it better to communicate in a web-based environment rather than the traditional classroom. There is more interaction as they can be communicated through chats, desktop conferencing, e-mail, forums, blogs, E-boards, audio and video streaming. E-learning environment allows learners to move at their own pace and can be more effective for learners who require more time to absorb information. Learners have more time to reflect on the chapters and can prepare suitable notes. Web-based learning can easily track the student progress.
E-learning develops knowledge of Internet and computer which can help the learners throughout their lives and careers. It helps to build self-knowledge and self-confidence which make the students realize and encourage them to take their own responsibility for learning. Unfortunately there are some students which are not motivated and have bad study habits and they could be left behind. Students may feel isolated from instructor and classmates as instructor may not always be available when students are studying or need help. E-learning has both its positive and negative aspects which should be taken in consideration. These aspects depend on the learners.

  89. E-learning has many names, however, some have newer technologies, other have older ones, an example is the television. The computer acts as the best e-learning platform, hence interacting two persons from different regions, however, losing the human touch. E-learning also allows peers to communicate with each other as well as their lecturers.

    ReplyDelete
  90. @SABRINA SHIREEN Even though, internet connections help people to interact with each other, yet we are losing the human touch.

  91. The advent and progress of e-learning has no doubt proved to be beneficial to students. If the dictionary describes the term 'online' as being "controlled or connected to a compute" I strongly agree with the fact that we can still call it online learning though only one person is connected(student is online while lecturer is away). However this practice may prove to be insufficient as I believe that students cannot always learn by themselves and need to see their tutors physically in order to grasp the full meaning of a chapter or subject.

    ReplyDelete
  92. @Sahina
Good point Sahina. We have to admit it, some students really concentrate on the fact that e-learning is an activity that is carried out online with no real pressure from the tutors. In addition, like in a traditional classroom, e-learning requires time, motivation and responsibility though learners may feel isolated due to lack of interaction and sometimes have to work by themselves without assistance.

  93. E-learning on this blog has a gamut of definitions. E-learning refers to every form of teaching that occurs using digital media as a source of delivery. E-learning incorporates video conferencing, web-based learning and computer-based learning. In my opinion, e-learning enhances the quality of teaching some specific topics since animations, video, pictures and sound can be added. Also, students can easily grasp the information and create emotional responses. Moreover, the progress of the students is tracked through assessments and multiple choice questions. Furthermore, doing video conferencing the cost of travelling is cut down and it saves time to do other productive tasks. Ultimately, the students can learn at their own time and paste. However, for some lessons the primary vehicle is the classroom. A teacher is required so that the students can master the lesson well. Conversely, in computer-based learning there is no interaction between the lecturer and the student.

    ReplyDelete
  94. The above article is basically explaining the different concepts of e-learning available and the difference between these concepts. Each of the concepts has their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, an educational programme on television is not considered interactive enough whereby the person watching the programme cannot interact with the person on the other side to clear any doubts. However, online learning eliminates this inconvenience where a student can chat with the lecturer to clear any confusion. The lecturer replies immediately to the student via a chatting session. Also, the Internet and the World-Wide Web provide the main platform for online learning nowadays. In all this, the computer has become an extremely important tool in e-learning.
Still, using technology and using it wisely are two different things. So students should be given enough information so as to know how to use the different technologies available to some good use.
Finally, I personally think that nothing can replace a face to face conversation with someone! Not everyone is comfortable learning in this way; some people will always prefer reading from a book than downloading materials from the net!

  95. As explained in this article, e-learning has several definitions. E-learning has advantages and also disadvantages. Students are able to learn at their own pace and can learn at any time. Thus students have more time available to do other activities. Also, e-learning is most appropriate for those who cannot travel to attend classes. According to me, e-learning help the students to become more responsible and develop their learning skills. E-learning allows the students and lecturer to interact via skype or blogs. However, students may be distracted when using the internet for e-learning. They may be tempted to browse other pages and therefore neglect learning.

I partially agree with you. E-learning has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. For instance time is saved to do other productive tasks and makes learning more interactive. However, for some lessons the primary vehicle is still the classroom. The students are focused on the teacher's talk. Also the students become less socialized.

  98. According to me E-learning encourages students to peruse through information by using hyperlinks and sites on the worldwide Web. Students are able to find information relevant to their personal situations and interest. E-learning allows students to select learning materials that meet their level of knowledge, interest and what they need to know to perform more effectively in an activity. E-learning is more focused on the learner and it is more interesting for the learner because it is information that they want to learn. E-learning is flexible and can be customized to meet the individual needs of the learners. E-learning helps students develop knowledge of the Internet. This knowledge will help learners throughout their careers. E-learning encourages students to take personal responsibility for their own learning. When learners succeed, it builds self-knowledge and self-confidence in them. Educators and corporations really benefit from e-learning. Learners enjoy having the opportunity to learn at their own pace, on their own time, and have it less costly.

  99. @bhavna- yes as miss bhavna said, E-learning has both its advantages and its disadvantages. i do agree that students are now able to work at their own pace and time, this should allow students with transport problems to continue with their studies but still what is missing is personal guide by teachers. The latter will prevent students from going in the wrong direction. i also agree that students tends to browse other pages while learning because i do the same but yet E-learning is seen as the learning trend in today's world.

i agree with you that a teacher is required so that the students can master the lesson well since e learning consists of several disadvantages. One disadvantage of e-learning is that learners need to have access to a computer as well as the Internet. They also need to have computer skills with programs such as word processing, Internet browsers, and e-mail. Without these skills and software it is not possible for the student to succeed in e-learning. E-learners need to be very comfortable using a computer. Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials difficult. This may cause the learners to get frustrated and give up.Another disadvantage of e-learning is that students may feel isolated from the instructor. Instructions are not always available to help the learner so learners need to have discipline to work independently without the instructor's assistance

  101. Today’s tutors are required to go beyond selecting a textbook for their students. Now they must regularly evaluate new resources, searching, selecting, planning for, implementing and managing them in order to promote best practice in learning. This article tells us the different ways of e-learning - educational programme on television, chatting session with the lecturer, web based and computer based learning. However e-learning is much more than that which the following paragraph explains.

The focus for any exploration of the state-of-the-art of e-Learning is therefore no more and no less than the combination and convergence of the most advanced features of digital information and communication technologies, for example, live broadcasts, mobile video and audio telecommunications, 3D graphics, email, the web and object-orientated interfaces, all of which can be designed to support, create and deliver significant educational experiences and environment. E-learning can also ensure that no one is excluded from education by geographic, physical or social circumstance.

I totally agree with your post “a teacher is required so that the student can master the lesson well”. It’s true since the student will get direct contact with the teacher and the student will able to tell all her/his difficulties to the teacher. The student will understand more quickly when the teacher is explaining. Moreover, e-learning has got a disadvantage. Students who do not have personal computer or internet connection will not be able to get access. Furthermore, the student must be computer literate that is must have an idea about Internet browser, sending email as well as word processing. I also agree with “e-learning enhances the quality of teaching some specific topics since animations, video, pictures and sounds are added”. This helps the student to understand more easily as well as develop their way of thinking.
